2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement NCMI plans to respond to and prevent human suffering resulting from poverty and disaster. The NCMI tag Challenged by Faith to end Poverty, expresses its mission to respond to the causes as well as the results of poverty as an expression of the Christian faith as understood and practiced by members of the Church of the Nazarene. Background Statement The General Board of the Church of the Nazarene founded Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc. (NCMI) in 1990 to identify and manage non-denominational resources for the relief and development projects of the Church of the Nazarene through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries (NCM). In collaboration with NCM and its international network of local churches and grassroots organizations, NCMI provides support for the church s mission to respond to human suffering wherever it exists. NCMI is a 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation as well as a 509(a)3 support organization registered in the State of Missouri. NCMI supports NCM and its network of 150- international non-government organizations (NGOs), over 170 faith-based organizations (FBOs) in the United States and 20,000 Nazarene congregations to develop humanitarian projects to addressing poverty issues. Impact Statement Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc. (NCMI) is a non-profit Global Intermediary Organization that accomplishes its mission through collaborative and cooperative partnerships between non-denominational donors for the support of relief and development projects designed and directed by local leaders in over 150 countries where the Church of the Nazarene through NCM is actively engaged Accomplishments: Water and sanitation project in Sri Lanka. Capacity building support to global network. Supported a Global WASH Advisor to support international water and sanitation programs. Youth mentoring project of US Dept. of Justice. Funded Swaziland Health Clinic Linkage Project. Sent 52,320 Crisis Care Kits for disaster relief in the US and internationally. 3 CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement I am privileged to serve as the Board Chairman of NCMI and to assist in the further development of a global network of volunteers and institutions responding to some of the world s most critical human needs. NCMI is particularly effective because it supports existing community level organizations, including other faith-based non-governmental development and relief agencies, thus eliminating the need for costly field offices and staff. Your gifts of time, talent, and treasure made it possible for NCMI to represent what Nazarenes are doing around the world to our government and to foundations. Your financial support was leveraged to generate additional funds to support ongoing programs organized by the faith-based grass roots organizations around the world. We as the Board of Directors are excited about the future of NCMI. The future holds never before opportunities as we monitor, evaluate, and assess the existing programs. The most important aspect of our work includes not only giving a cup of water or giving a helping hand, but making sure that person can become self-sufficient. Our network of partners and friends expands daily as we seek to respond compassionately to people in need around the world. 4 Programs Programs End Poverty Description The primary focus of NCMI is working through its network of 180+ FBOs, 40+ NGOs and thousands of Compassionate Churches to serve the poor and needy around the world. NCMI is a resource development partner that works with its affiliate organizations to create additional funding streams. NCMI's signature themes are: 1.Child Development 2.Youth Mentoring 3.Water and Sanitation 4.Health : HIV/AIDS, Malaria 5.Leadership Development/Capacity Development 6.Disaster Response 7.Immigration 8.Food Security Category Human Services, General/Other Human Services, General/Other Population Served US& International,, Short-Term Success NCMI works with various FBOs/NGOs within our network to apply for and secure additional funding for projects that have potential for national & global funding. Congressional appropriation to provide additional computer technology for a California youth center Compassion Capital Funding for Indiana FBO to develop capacity within youth development organization in Indianapolis. Two HIV/AIDS sub-awards from USAIDas part of the AERDO HIV/AIDS Alliance, a consortium of evangelical relief and development organizations led by World Concern and Food for the Hungry. These grants cover HIV/AIDS work in five African countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria and Zambia) and in two specific program areas: 1.Support for orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS. 2.Youth prevention through abstinence and behavior change. Long- Term Success The end of the causes as well as the results of poverty worldwide. Program Success Monitored By In order to measure project performance, NCMI has developed a comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) system that is integrated into all its development projects. NCMI's M&E system tracks outputs against targets, measures outcomes, informs the program for continuous quality improvement, and assesses data quality. The components of the M&E system include consistent program-specific indicator definitions, M&E framework, standardized data collection tools with instructions for implementers, detailed reporting formats, data management systems and a tool kit for assessing data quality. 4

5 Examples of Program Success NCMI was awarded a $750,000 grant to be given to Shepherd Community over 3 years. It is a capacity building grant for youth organizations that work with at risk youth. NCMI was awarded a $75,000 grant to be given to P F Bresee Foundation for computer technology upgrades for the Tech Center. NCMI was awarded two HIV/AIDS sub-award grants from USAID as part of the AERDO HIV/AIDS Alliance, a consortium of evangelical relief and development organizations led by World Concern and Food for the Hungry. The combined grant amount will be approximately $5M. NCMI was awarded a $9M grant from USAID for the New Partners Initiative. NCMI was awarded a $1.5M grant from CNCS to recruit volunteers for Katrina relief. 5

6 Gifts-In-Kind Description Since 1996, NCMI has shipped donated commodity with a total value of $40M to ministries around the world. NCMI trademarked a personal hygiene kit (Crisis Care Kit) in 2000 and have sent over 487,000 kits around the world for disasters and humanitarian relief. The US State Department has requested more than six containers of Crisis Care Kits for their ministries in the CIS. NCMI also has available a School Pal-Pak which has school supplies for children. Since 2005, NCMI has shipped over 57,000 paks. Since each pak helps two children, NCMI has better the lives of 120,000 children with this program. Crisis Care Kits provide basic personal supplies for people in times of great need. Since 2012 Crisis Care Kits were sent to New York, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Colorado, Missouri, Florida, Kansas, China, Ukraine, Armenia, Swaziland, and Philippines to respond to disasters. NCMI's short-term goal for the GIK program, is to have enough Crisis Care Kits available for any type of disaster that happens anywhere in the world. Long- Term Success A long-term plan has not been created for the GIK Program. The success of the program depends soley on the needs of the people. NCMI's goal is to have on hand the non-cash commodity in anticipation of the potential needs. The NCMI network of FBOs/NGOs determine the need in the local communities and request certain non-cash commodity to be distributed as outlined in their strategic plan. Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success A monitoring system has not been created for the GIK program. However, since 2000, NCMI has been consistently awarded shipping grants from the US Department of State to ship containers to the CIS countries. Due to the excellent quality of the commodity that has been sent to the Ukraine, the consignee has a reputation of being the best ministry to partner with. NCMI was awarded a $54,000 from USAID for the OFR program for ocean freight to ship humanitarian aid to several Africa countries. NCMI was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Servant Christian Community Foundation for the Gifts-In-Kind program. 7 Leadership & Staff Executive Director/CEO Executive Director Term Start June Ms. Nell Becker Sweeden Ph.D. Experience Nell has served in various capacities with NCM over the past 12 years, most recently as education coordinator. Her areas of expertise include international development, educational initiatives, and theology. While serving as education coordinator, Nell also served as assistant professor of theology and Richard B. Parker co-chair of Wesleyan Theology at George Fox Evangelical Seminary. Her recent accomplishments have included the publication of Church on the Way: Hospitality and Migration. Nell studied Spanish and theology at Point Loma Nazarene University and holds a Master of Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary. Additionally, Nell completed her Doctor of Philosophy at Boston University in practical theology with specializations in Wesleyan theology and church and society.
