2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission We build the momentum of the nonprofit sector to drive equitable, measurable, and lasting change. Background Momentum Nonprofit Partners originated in 1992 as The Grant Center, with a focus on bringing more federal grant funding to the Mid-South by providing nonprofit organizations with the resources and tools to compete for federal funding. As competition for funding increased along with demand for nonprofit services, The Grant Center recognized the need for organizations to build internal capacity, not only to secure funding, but to more effectively pursue their mission and serve their constituents. The Grant Center changed its name to the Alliance for Nonprofit Excellence and expanded the services and resources available to nonprofits with a new new mission focused on building capacity and strengthening nonprofits toward excellence. As the nonprofit landscape continues to shift, Mid-South nonprofits are facing new demands in a rapidly changing environment. Out of the more recent recession came a new operating environment that challenges organizations to adapt to new issues, respond to increased scrutiny, and address higher expectations to increase impact and remain sustainable. Sources of capital have changed. Organizations need expertise and tools to help them reframe their financial approach to pursue their mission. Acting alone is no longer an option. Boards and staff need to see their part in the bigger picture and develop the capacity to work across sectors to create results. Success is more than counting numbers. Nonprofits need the capacity to evaluate themselves, improve their work, and communicate their impact to a discerning public. The Alliance for Nonprofit Excellence evolved its philosophy and programs to address these changes and challenges and provide organizations with the support and services needed to build capacity in areas of revenue, people, and impact. The Alliance provided opportunities for organizations to connect and collaborate as nonprofits work to serve and strengthen communities and find a collective voice as a sector. After 25 years of supporting nonprofits in Memphis and upon retirement of the long-time CEO, the Alliance for Nonprofit Excellence conducted a comprehensive planning process, inclusive of revisiting our values, programming, and desired outcomes. A business plan was developed utilizing robust community input and research into peer agencies and key topical areas and was formally guided by the board of directors and an Advisory Committee, which was comprised of nonprofit and foundation leaders. Strategic priorities were developed through this planning process, and a foundation for transformation was built on the following guiding principles: 1. We believe that when nonprofits get better, the community gets better. 2. We believe remarkable people can produce remarkable results talent matters. 3. We are inclusive, accessible, and we value all voices. 4. We emphasize continuous improvement and accountability to bring the highest impact possible. 5. We promote equity and justice in every action. 6. The needs of the nonprofits, the community, and Memphis drive our daily work and our long-term vision. 7. We collaborate, convene and partner as a way of furthering our mission. 8. We challenge and disrupt entrenched thinking for positive change. 2
