2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission To provide relief and positive reinforcement to hungry, homeless and marginally poor people; to foster a renewal of spirit and hope; and to empower them to self-sufficiency. Background Samaritan Ministries, Inc. was organized in 1984 by the Temple Baptist Church as a community outreach agency targeting inner city North Nashville as its service area. Temple Baptist Church (later changed to The Temple Church in 1996) is one of the largest African-American churches in Nashville, Tennessee with a membership of 3,000+. Samaritan Ministries is the church s 501c3 organizational arm and is the central point for its major community outreach programs. The agency has a 30-year history in the Nashville community and believes that all social systems impacting the lives of people should be involved in resolving community problems. The agency is staffed by an Executive Director, Cynthia Macon Gordon, a staff pastor/ administrator with experience in program development, implementation and evaluation, fiscal management, fundraising and administration. The board of directors are all community leaders who are committed to an improved community and work tirelessly to that end. Samaritan Ministries provides nutritional support for the homeless, hungry, and destitute by serving hot meals daily (more than 50,0000 served anually); spiritual and psychological counseling by trained counselors; bible study weekly and clothing to anyone in need. These services continue to be based in our facility at 28th and Jefferson Street, a major thoroughfare in the North Nashville community where 3 historically black colleges and universities are located: Fisk Univ., Meharry Medical College and Tennessee State Univ. Students from these institutions make up a cadre of volunteers who assist in service delivery. In 1991, with a grant from the TN Dept. of Mental Health & Mental Retardation and space provided by the Metropolitan Development Housing Authority (MDHA), the agency expanded its services to the Cumberland View Housing Development, alias Dodge City, a high crime area in North Nashville besieged with drugs, gangs and violence to implement Project SEE. This program is committed to providing educational and prevention services to at-risk African-American youth ages 6-12 in grades K-6 to prepare and motivate them to be productive contributors to their home, school and community. In 1993, the TN Dept. of Health, Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Services declared the program exemplary and it was among 12 prototyped programs to implement an outcome funding initiative. Impact Accomplishments for 2016: 1)Upgraded and replaced all appliances and electronics 2) Launched a Reading for Success Challenge to enhance literacy among our children. 3) Celebrated 30% of our children making the A /AB honor roll. 4) with Funding from Cigna corporation our library was completely renovated and restocked with books.
