4 COMUNITY HEALTH SERVICES appointment. Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure screening, education and counseling is available Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Blood Lead Testing Blood lead-screening tests are recommended for all children 1-2 years of age, even if they appear healthy. Tests are given to children ages 6 months to 6 years old if lead exposure is suspected. The tests are provided by Communicable Disease Control Public health nurses provide education and counseling regarding a variety of communicable diseases. First Breath A statewide quit smoking program for pregnant women. Offers quit smoking materials, counseling, incentives, and support Health Information and Referral Phone Line A Public Health Nurse is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm to answer health related questions and assist in locating community resources. Home Visits and Consultations with a Public Health Nurse Public Health Nurses are available to visit families with newborns and children in their homes. Information on infant and childcare, parenting and community resources is provided to parents, older adults and their families. everywoman s journal training This free two-hour program provides the opportunity for women to express their feelings in written format. The benefits of journaling are explained, and a variety of journaling styles are presented. Head Lice Orientations School volunteers are trained to check for head lice in area schools. Loving Touch Infant Massage Classes Classes are offered for infants six months of age and younger, and their caregivers. This hands-on class teaches the benefits and techniques of infant massage. Red Cross School Health Room Responder Class A training class for staff and volunteers performing First Aid duties in the school health rooms. Reflections of Wellness for Women An annual women s self-care expo sponsored by community partners. Includes speakers, exhibits and health information. VITAL STATISTICS Births and deaths occurring in West Allis are registered at the West Allis Health Department. Certified copies of birth and death certificates are available for a fee upon request. Health statistics are compiled for future health programs and services.
5 Vision and Hearing Screening Vision and hearing screenings are conducted annually for targeted grades in public and private schools. Screenings are also provided by parent request. Help with related services is provided. WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) A supplemental food program for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and young children. The program provides food vouchers and nutrition information to income eligible clients. Wisconsin Well Woman Program (WWWP) A program that provides free mammograms and pap smears for women, age 45 years and older, who lack health insurance. DENTAL HEALTH SERVICES The dental hygienist is available for consultation with Health Department clients upon request. Dental programs and oral screenings are offered to school and community groups. Educational materials are available upon request. Dental Fluoride Varnish Program A school-based dental fluoride varnish program that targets specific grades at participating schools for income eligible children. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SERVICES The Environmental Health program delivers health service to City residents, stressing illness prevention and health promotion. Community Environmental Program West Allis Health Department staff conducts inspections and licenses all public swimming pools, hotels, rooming houses and body-art establishments in the City. Staff also responds to complaints such as nuisance noise, garbage problems, rodent and insect infections, other animal-related concerns, and investigation of lead-paint, asbestos and radon. Food Service Program Environmentalists inspect and license restaurants, taverns, grocery stores and any business that sells or stores food items. Staff responds to all consumer complaints related to City food establishments and provides training to operators. Weights and Measures Program Environmentalists inspect and approve all weighing and measuring devices within the City such as scales and gas pumps. Devices are tested annually and retailers are checked to see that they are following proper rules.
6 FARMERS MARKET Farmers Market Locally grown produce and plants are sold at an outdoor market, 1559 South 65th Street. Open on Tuesday and Thursday from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm and on Saturday from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, from May to November. Marketplace (Formerly Trash and Treasures) Weekly rummage sale, Sunday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm is held at the West Allis Farmers Market during the summer months. Spaces are available for rental Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from 8:30 am 4:30 pm. HEALTH EDUCATION SERVICES Human Growth and Development Safety & First Aid Personal Hygiene Educational programs are provided on health topics and Health Department services to worksite, church, school, and community groups. School topics include: Nutrition Handwashing Tobacco Pamphlets and other health resource materials are provided to individuals and groups upon request. Group tours of the Health Department are scheduled by appointment. Immunization Clinics A walk-in immunization clinic is available each Wednesday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and each Thursday from 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm. Immunizations are available by appointment every second Monday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and every fourth Tuesday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Community flu clinics are held in the fall. Flu immunizations are available to homebound residents each fall. Love and Logic Parenting Classes Love and Logic Parenting Classes are offered twice yearly. Parents learn how to help children become responsible by sharing control, offering choices, and effective communication. Parenting Classes General parent education classes are offered with topics ranging from child development to dealing with misbehaviors. Pregnancy Testing Free pregnancy screening tests are offered Monday through Friday. Women are offered counseling and referrals. Prenatal Care Coordination Pregnant women meet monthly with a Public Health Nurse to discuss prenatal care and community resources. Two For The Show A child development screening event designed to identify potential learning or developmental concerns for parents and their two year olds. Offered twice a year.
