Tell us more about what your club does!* The WISE graduate student group supports women graduate students in science, social science, math and engineering. WISE provides professional and social development opportunities by creating a support system and an active dialogue focusing on issues unique to women in science. The specific aims of our groups are the following: a. Represent the interests of women graduate students to the MSU community by facilitating communication and interaction between female graduate students, faculty and administration. b. Provide activities and events for women graduate students to support professional and social development. These activities can include, but are not limited to: a seminar series that will showcase the inspiring and diverse careers of female faculty at MSU as well as other female scientist throughout the community, a social group meeting each month, professional mentoring, and outreach programs geared towards undergraduate as well as middle and high school aged girls in the community and finally hosting an annual regional conference for graduate women and professionals throughout Montana. c. Host a website to serve as a home base, a source of information for literature, group events as well as a way to highlight current research being done by female graduate students at MSU. 5 Date-Specific Request # Provide a thorough description of the activity (i.e. conference, competition, event, etc.): Part of our mission as a group on campus is to host a seminar series which highlights the successful careers of women scientists and engineers both within MSU and the greater Bozeman community. Our goals for the series are the following:. Provide a venue to showcase the careers of women in science and engineering. This will allow women in the community an opportunity to get the word out about the work they have done/are doing in addition to making them more relatable to students by having an opportunity to tell their story. 2. Provide students an opportunity to learn about a variety of work being done both within and outside of their department. So often graduate students are confined to their field, but we believe interdisciplinary knowledge is powerful and should not be over looked so we try to get a variety of speakers. So far this year, the seminar series has featured Kate Batchelder (a social scientist working for a research institute in North Carolina), Dr. Jia Hu (an assistant professor in ecology), Dr. Connie Chang (an assistant professor in chemical & biological engineering), and Dr. Sarah Codd (a professor in mechanical and industrial engineering). The topics these women have discussed include their journeys through science, progress in social science, using science to explore the world, and what a career in science or engineering looks like after graduate school. Each seminar includes a 45 minute presentation followed by a 5 minute Q&A session. The content of the presentations vary depending on the speaker, however all of them include a synopsis of the speaker's journey as a women in science or engineering as well as a little bit about their current research/work. The seminar is held over the lunch hour, so after the presentation we provide a buffet style lunch for attendants and the speaker to mingle, eat and further discuss the seminar. 6 The seminar series is the foremost way for WISE to fulfill our aim of providing women graduate students in science, social science, math and engineering opportunities for both professional and social development. Each seminar gives us an opportunity to promote our club in addition to showcasing the successful and inspiring careers of women in our community. The seminars are open to all and we typically have both male and female graduate students as well as faculty from various departments in attendance. By inviting speakers from various backgrounds, we are able to assemble a diverse audience which provides students an invaluable opportunity for networking. We plan to host 6 seminars for the entire academic year (3 per semester), each of which will include (all from Costco) 2 sandwich trays, fruit bowl, box of variety chips, cookie tray, water pack and soda pack. The coffee, plates, forks, napkins and cups will be divided between the six seminars and two outreach events. Do you have another date-specific request?* Yes Date-Specific Request #2 Provide a thorough description of the activity (i.e. conference, competition, event, etc.): This Fall we plan to host the first ever regional WISE conference for female graduate students and faculty in science, social science, engineering and mathematics from universities throughout the state of Montana including MSU, MSUB, UM and MT Tech. The conference will begin at 0:30 with checkin and a welcome from the WISE co-presidents. There will be a buffet style brunch and key note address from -noon. The key note speaker will be Dr. Mary Schweitzer who is an alumnus of MSU and current curator at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Following the key note address will be a short break where we will do trivia for a prize then begin the first of two professional development breakout session. Each session will include two "group discussions" lead by MSU faculty which will be an opportunity for interactive discussions geared science activism, professional identity, interview skills, grant writing and being your own advocate. The first breakout sessions will be from 2:30-2pm and each group discussion will last 30 minutes with a 0 minute break in between. We will then take a short break for snacks and a little more trivia for prizes. The last breakout session will be from 2:30-4pm, again each group discussion will be 30 minutes long with a 0 minute break in between. Following the last professional development session, from 4:5-6:30pm, will be an opportunity for networking and social development. The goals we have for this conference are to, first and foremost, create an open dialogue focusing on issues unique to women working in science and or engineering fields. We believe that having Dr. Mary Schweitzer deliver the keynote address will provide an opportunity for these women to learn from and be inspired by the successful career of a women who came from a similar educational background. The professional development breakout sessions will provide four different opportunities to discuss topics related to science activism, professional identity, interview skills, grant writing and being your own advocate. We believe that the breakout sessions will offer valuable information on how women can put their best food forward as they pursue a career in science or engineering. The breakout sessions will be led by MSU faculty, so not only will the information being discussed come from women currently in relevant fields, it will also creates a safe space for discussion and open up an opportunity for mentorship. The social at the end of the conference will provide an opportunity for these women to further discuss the topics addressed throughout the conference as well as help to extend their network within the MSU/Bozeman community and the state of Montana. Additionally, we believe this conference will strengthen the local WISE community by providing an annual event for like-minded women to come together. We believe that our group has the ability to impact women not only at MSU but throughout the state of Montana. 10 General comments or justifications for date-specific request #2. We plan to host the event at Bridger Bowl's Deer Park Chalet. Bridger charge $750 for the day and $30 a head for catering which will include non-alcoholic beverages, brunch, snacks, and heavy appetizers. The service charge is 8% of the total catering costs. We would like to host the event off campus to provide a more relaxed and fun atmosphere so the event acts as a retreat from the school/work setting especially for attendants from MSU. It will also provide a neutral meeting ground for women from academia and industry to meet and discuss their experiences. Additionally, we think that holding the event off campus will help increase attendance because it will stand apart from our other on-campus events held throughout the year. The money for the give-aways will be spent to purchase gift cards of various amounts to be given away as trivia prizes throughout the conference in hopes of retaining enthusiasm throughout the event. The keynote speaker does not charge an honorarium, however we will be paying for a round trip flight to Bozeman from Raleigh North Carolina, two night stay at the Element hotel as well as dinner on her arrival night ($25 per person, 4 people total) and after the conference. Since none of our speakers will be paid, we would like to provide a gift for them. The speaker gift basket charges include a $6.20 basket and $20.95 hat from the MSU bookstore. The other items we will include in the baskets will be WISE swag that has already been purchased. We will charge a $0 admission fee for the conference that will help support the program and club in addition to ensuring students that register will actually attend. Attendees will register for the conference via Eventbee.com. Eventbee.com charges $ per ticket and we expect to have 90 paid attendees. We don't want the cost of attendance to prevent women from coming to the event so we would like to be able to provide scholarships for individuals that cannot afford it. Included in our advertising will be a way to contact us and provide a legitimate reason as to why they cannot afford the registration fee. Since the fee is only $0 we don't expect more than 0% of people to ask for a scholarship. The printing charge is for worksheets during the breakout sessions. Do you have another date-specific request?* Yes Date-Specific Request #3 Provide a thorough description of the activity (i.e. conference, competition, event, etc.): A recent study from the U.S. Department of Education ( found that nearly half of females that earned a bachelors in STEM fields between 2003 and 2009 left their respective field by the Spring of This shocking statistic has led us to include undergraduate outreach in our mission as a graduate student group. To fulfill this part of our mission we plan to hold a "Grad School?" meet and greet for female undergraduates to come meet current graduate students and hear a little bit about their research, but mostly about their overall experience in graduate school. The event will be held in a SUB ballroom and include four 0 minute presentations (each from one WISE member) followed by lunch and an opportunity for the students to ask the panel of WISE members questions. Having gone through the process ourselves, we recognize the educational and social barriers that exist as women transition from undergrad to graduate school. We believe that by increasing interactions between graduate and undergraduate students we can begin to break some of these barriers in addition to cultivating mentorship and encouraging undergraduate students to stay at MSU for their graduate studies. The undergraduates will be provided an opportunity to interact with graduate students to hear about their experiences in graduate school and ask any questions they might have. Additionally, this will provide the panel of WISE members an opportunity to work on their science communication skills as well as provide them with an opportunity to engage in mentorship. 13 Date-Specific Request #4 Provide a thorough description of the activity (i.e. conference, competition, event, etc.): Part of our mission is to host an outreach event for female high school seniors in hopes of encouraging them to pursue college degrees in science or engineering fields. We plan to do this by reaching out to a few of the science teachers at Bozeman High School to see if they would work with us to host a brief after-school event for female seniors. The event will include a brief presentation by a panel of WISE members regarding statistics on females in STEM fields as well as opportunities after college that are available for women who pursue STEM degrees. The event will end with an opportunity for the students to ask questions. We hope to provide cookies and drinks to help encourage attendance. We do not know the exact number of female seniors currently at BHS, however we do know that there is currently,844 students which would mean approximately 460 per grade and we figure half of the seniors would be female leaving 230 student that may attend the event. Each cookie tray contains 50 cookies so we will need at least 5. Each water package contains 40 waters and soda package contains 32 cans, we figure each student will not take one of each and the left overs can be used at seminars.
