6 PNP Prgram Prgram Descriptin The Pediatric Nurse Practitiner (PNP) Prgram is designed t prepare advanced practice registered nurses t deliver primary and/r acute care t children (birth - 21 years f age) acrss practice settings and institutinal bundaries. The verall bjective f the PNP Prgram is t prvide the fundatin and scafflding fr students t becme cmpetent and caring pediatric nurse practitiners, schlars, and leaders. The prgram includes bth didactic and clinical curses, beginning with fundatinal cursewrk and advancing t specialized clinical applicatins. In additin t prviding direct care t children, graduates are prepared as lifelng learners, leaders, and advcates fr children and their families. A PNP may be certified in primary care (PC), acute care (AC), r bth (PC-AC). The scpe f practice fr the PNP-PC- r PNP-AC is nt setting specific, but instead is based n the child s health-related needs: Primary Care (PC) Track The PNP-PC practices wherever pediatric patients are in need f primary care. The fcus fr the PNP-PC is an nging relatinship with the child and family in the delivery f cmprehensive health care and crdinatin f health services. Accrdingly, curse wrk cncentrates n fundatinal knwledge f child grwth and develpment, health prmtin and disease preventin behavirs and interventins, and cmmn acute/chrnic illnesses and/r cnditins. Acute Care (AC) Track The PNP-AC des nt practice nly in what is traditinally cnsidered t be acute care gegraphic settings, such as an intensive care unit (ICU) r an acute care in-patient unit r hspital, but may practice wherever pediatric patients are acutely ill, physilgically unstable, technlgically dependent, and/r vulnerable t cmplicatins. The fcus fr the PNP-AC is the delivery f restrative care, characterized by rapidly changing clinical cnditins. The PNP prgram is Prtland-based, using bth hybrid curse delivery and an executive mdel fr class times and pediatric clinical practicums t allw wrking and/r distance students t participate. There are masters, pst-master s certificate, and DNP ptins. 6

7 Prgram f Study Students begin with fundatinal cursewrk in advanced pathphysilgy, advanced pharmaclgy, and advanced health assessment. The curriculum builds n this fundatin adding advanced didactic pediatric cursewrk and expsing students t varied clinical rtatins thrugh pediatric primary, acute, specialty, and chrnic care cntent and clinical sites. While students will chse a track (e.g. PC, AC), the entire first layer f curriculum is identical fr everyne. As each student prgresses, clinical immersin in track-specific experiences are individually mapped t ensure students graduate, nt nly with a brad expsure t the rle, but als sme deep learning pprtunities. 9 PNP Student Cmpetencies/Related Student Learning Outcmes Upn graduatin, it is expected that PNP graduates will: 1. PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS FOR INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Demnstrate cmpetency in the cre knwledge, skills, and practices needed t prvide primary and/r acute care t children (birth 21 years), including independent management f: a. well-child care and cmmn pediatric acute/chrnic illnesses/cnditins, and/r b. cmplex acute, critical, and chrnic illnesses/cnditins, characterized as physilgically unstable, technlgically dependent, and/r highly vulnerable t cmplicatins. 2. REASONING AND JUDGMENT Demnstrate the ability t identify health-related prblems, critically cmpare ptins, make timely decisins r recmmendatins, identify uncertainties, and use findings t imprve child health utcmes in light f evlving science. 3. EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE AND RESEARCH Demnstrate the ability t access, evaluate, and apply knwledge t supprt evidencebased care, prmtin, and discvery. 4. LIFELONG LEARNING Demnstrate the ability t recgnize limitatins in persnal knwledge and experience thrugh self-mnitring and reflective practices. 5. COMMUNICATION Demnstrate active listening and cmmunicatin skills t ensure effective, culturally apprpriate exchange f health-related infrmatin with/n behalf f children. 6. PROFESSIONALISM AND ETHICS Demnstrate integrity, hnesty, and respect, knwledge f ethical principles and the standards f prfessinal cnduct, and the ability t apply ethical principles in clinical care, research, educatin, r cmmunity service. 7. PATIENT/CLIENT-CENTERED CARE Demnstrate the ability t cllabrate with individuals, including children and their families, t prvide quality care that is respectful f and respnsive t different preferences, needs, attitudes, beliefs, and values. 10. 10 Preceptr Eligibility ( Am I Preceptr Material?) The specific requirements t precept include: Educatin fr advanced prfessinal practice, fr example: PNP r FNP CNS in Pediatrics MD Pediatrics r Family Medicine Interprfessinal specialist (e.g. Audilgy, Dental, Nutritin, etc.) Engaged in clinical/specialty practice that primarily serves pediatric patients/families. One year experience in pediatric-related practice Minimum f 6 mnths experience at current site. Hld current unencumbered license/certificatin. Nt a current wrk supervisr (if student is placed in place f emplyment). Mre glbally, the characteristics f expert clinical teachers typically include: Enjyment f teaching and patient/family care Accessibility and supprtiveness Ability t give clear directin A willingness t share knwledge Flexibility 10

11 Rle Expectatins fr Preceptr, Curse Faculty, and Student Preceptr Rle First, the tw mst imprtant things yu need t be aware f knw as a preceptr are: 1. Preceptrs, r an equally qualified designee, must be physically present at the clinical site when the student is there. 2. Preceptrs, r equally qualified designee, must sign all student ntes/entries int the patient health recrd AND must sign all prescriptins, as the students are nt yet licensed in advanced clinical practice and d nt have prescriptive authrity. In general, the preceptr rle is generally that f a clinical teacher and mentr, serving as a valued and experienced resurce, and prviding a safe and supprtive envirnment in which the student can grw and develp as a clinician. Each preceptr is asked t take a mment at the beginning f the clinical rtatin t tuch base with the student t assess: What are the student s learning gals fr this experience? Hw much experience des the student already have in this clinical area? What skills has the student had experience with? What are the student s (and yur) expectatins? Mre specifically, the preceptr is expected t: Orient the student t the site, plicies, and prcedures * Create a cllabrative, respectful learning envirnment Prvide direct supervisin during clinical experiences Identify learning experiences with apprpriate patients/families Prvide nging feedback t students Be a psitive and effective rle mdel Ntify curse faculty f cncerns abut student s behavir, wrk, and/r prgressin Cmplete a clinical evaluatin f the student *SEE Appendix A fr Sample Orientatin Checklist 11

It is the respnsibility f the Curse Faculty and we have internal prcedures fr that. In the event that such an incident ccurs: 1. Fllw the emergency prcedures fr yur wn agency r institutin 2. Ntify the Curse Faculty immediately (r as sn as reasnably pssible) 3. Dcument the incident in writing 4. Let us knw if there is anything we can d t assist at yur end r urs. 14
