We were founded in 1975 as the Sarasota Community Orchestra under the direction of Arlene Stein. During that first year, the orchestra grew from five to thirty members. Today, the Pops Orchestra is comprised of more than sixty-five musicians including some of the communities finest professionals as well as non-professionals of all ages. The Orchestra reflects the diversity of our community and audience. With a focus on light classical, broadway musical theatre, contemporary and popular music, our concerts are more relaxed than the formal classical orchestra, with an emphasis on providing a fun musical experience for our audience. Our ticket prices are affordable, ranging from $5 for students to $25 for premium seating. Each concert is designed to entertain, invigorate and project our passion and enthusiasm for music and features "something for everyone" to enjoy. Statement from the Board Chair Statement from Board President 1. Board Engagement. The Pops Board of Directors is actively engaged in the management and operations of the Pops. Operating without any paid executive or administrative positions, Board members shoulder responsibilities for Financial Management, House Management, Box Office and Marketing. 2. Annual Grants. We are now receiving annual grants from the Sarasota County Tourist Development Cultural/Arts, the Sarasota and Manatee Community Foundations, the Gulf Coast Community Foundation and the Women s Exchange. 3. MOAA/Pops Partnership. We have joined with the Sarasota Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America to jointly sponsor concerts that honor veterans, inspire patriotism and embrace freedom. With support of local foundations and donors we regularly perform concerts at the Patriot Plaza on the grounds of the Sarasota Memorial Cemetery and a Veterans Day concert as part of our annual concert series. 3
4 4. Musician Remuneration. Section principals receive a stipend for rehearsals and concerts. In 2016 we were able to increase paid positions to include second chair woodwinds. These paid performers lead their sections and enhance the professional sound of the orchestra. 5. Rebranding. We rebranded the Sarasota Pops Orchestra as The Pops Orchestra to better describe our programming and, in using the tag line: Music You Love, Musicians You Know." 6. Donor Base. During the most recent Giving Challenge the Pops continued to increase both its new and returning donors and because of matching grant funds from the Patterson Foundation received nearly $20, Audience Increase. Audience statistics for the concert season reflect a 25% increase over the previous concert year and demonstrates the growth of audience for our Bradenton concerts. In our season subscribers were increased to nearly Challenging Programming. Our season is entitled "A Season of Celebrities" when we feature nationally known guest artists who live in our own community. In our first concert, "Neil Diamond's America" we partnered with the Military Officers Association of Sarasota to celebrate Veterans Day and feature Bobby Palermo was voted "Top Neil Diamond Tribute Artist in Las Vegas." In December nationally acclaimed soprano Jenny Kim-Godfrey joined the Pops for a concert of seasonal holiday music. In February our guest artist is Audrey Landers, who starred in the 1980s television series "Dallas" and also appeared in "Love Boat", "Fantasy Island" and "Dukes of Hazard"and the movie version of "A Chorus Line" and received the 2012 Florida Motion Picture & Television Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. The final concert of the season in March features Emmy Award winner Dick Hyman who is a member of the Jazz Hall of Fame, to perform piano jazz favorites. 9. Strong Collaborations. Pops concerts includes collaborations with other arts organizations and local artists. 10. Community Involvement. As part of our partnership with the Military Officers Association of Sarasota, the Pops awarded $4,000 in profits from the Veterans concert performances to the MOAS scholarship program to benefit returning veterans needing financial assistance to attend our local colleges and technical schools. We also face significant challenges: 1. Executive Director. To advance to the next level the Pops needs a paid executive director capable of guiding the work of volunteers, provide additional development capacity and assume the administrative responsibilities common in a small-medium size business that is the Pops. 2. Long-term Fiscal Stability. With only 50% of the Pops budget from ticket sales we have a constant challenge to identify new and cultivate existing funding sources. We have significantly increased our season ticket subscribers and have a robust Fund Raising Plan to provide a continuing base of donor support. 3. Board Development. The Pops must move to the next level by developing a five-year Strategic Plan, establishing long-range funding goals and building well-defined relationships within the greater Bradenton/Sarasota community. 4. Grow our Collaborative Relationships with Other Arts Organizations. The Pops continues to include sister arts organizations and performers in our programming. We are working to expand these existing relationships and explore additional collaboration opportunities in administrative areas such as ticketing and marketing where there is a potential for cost savings and improved benefit. 5. New Technologies. We need to look to new technologies that can redefine how we can create and distribute content and interact with our audiences. This includes greater audience engagement during concerts through the use of social media and expanding our offerings to underserved portions of the community. The Pops now numbers over sixty-five musicians strong, drawn from throughout the greater Sarasota/Bradenton community. In 2014 we rebranded ourselves as the "Pops Orchestra" with the tag line Music You Love, Musicians You Know to better reflect the programming we feature and the community base shared by both our musicians and audience. In each of our concerts we partner with local artists and organizations including instrumental and vocal soloists, 8
9 local choral and instrumental groups and associations that include arts sponsorship within their mission. Our season will continue our vision to be a catalyst for arts collaboration. We will strengthen our relationships with our local veterans organizations (spearheaded by the Military Officers Association of America, Sarasota Chapter), local colleges including the State College of Florida and the Ringling School of Art and Design and sister arts organizations including Gloria Musicae and the Manatee Concert Band. Such collaborations expand the audience base for both the Pops and our arts partners, highlight the arts and culture of Sarasota and communicate to our audience members the story of a vibrant arts community with opportunities for all to enjoy as an audience member, patron or performer. 9

To advance to the next level the Pops needs an executive director capable of directing the workload of volunteers, provide additional development capacity and assume the administrative responsibilities common in a small-medium size business that is the Pops. ACTION: We have developed a position description, interviewed other EDs working in the field, established a salary range and are working to identify funding sources for this part-time position. 2.Long-term Fiscal Stability. With only 50% of the Pops budget from ticket sales we have a constant challenge to identify new and cultivate existing funding sources. ACTION: We have added board members who have strong development experience and are developing a strategic plan that will include a development component. 3.Board Development. The Pops must move to the next level by developing a five-year Strategic Plan, establishing long-range funding goals and building well-defined relationships within the greater Bradenton/Sarasota community. ACTION: Development of a 5-Year Strategic Plan is underway. 4.Grow our Collaborative Relationships with Other Arts Organizations. The Pops has invited many other local arts organizations in our community to join in our musical offerings. We need to expand these collaborative relationships and explore additional opportunities to cooperate. There are a variety of administrative areas including joint ticketing and shared marketing that have the potential for cost savings and improved benefit. ACTION: We have established significant relationships with nearly a dozen sister arts organizations and regularly include them in our programming. We are participating in an effort to grow a consortium of arts organizations to share administrative activities. 5.New Technologies. We need to look to new technologies that can redefine how we can create and distribute content and interact with our audiences. It could include more audience engagement during concerts to use of social media, to expanding our offerings to underserved portions of the community. ACTION: We have appointed a Social Media person to manage the Pops Facebook and Twitter accounts and build our social media friends base. 12
