Statements & Search Criteria Mission Statement To perform new music by young, living composers. Background Statement A Boston Globe five-time "Classical Music Pick, the Juventas New Music Ensemble voices the musical culture of the present by featuring the repertoire of composers under age 35. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, the ensemble has seven core musicians augmented with guest artists to form a wide array of instrumentations both traditional and non-traditional. Since its founding in 25, Juventas has showcased works by over 1 composers in more than 75 exhilarating performances and has held residencies at The Boston Conservatory (26-present), Middlebury College (21, 211), and Harvard University (211, 212). Juventas has also collaborated on several recording projects with Parma Records and with individual composers. This season, Juventas will produce a full album of new music by young composers with the support of New Dynamic Records. In addition to chamber music concerts, performances have included collaborations with visual artists, dancers, scientists and political activists. Juventas also produces an annual Opera Project, featuring a new, fully-staged production each season. Recent productions have received The American Prize for Best Professional Opera Production (212) and the National Opera Association Award for Best Professional Production (1st place 211, 2nd place 212). Impact Statement ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 1. Winning two national awards and invitation to the NYC International Fringe Festival 2. A continued success in fostering steady fiscal growth, almost doubling our budget annually each year since our founding 3. Plans for a full CD recording, in collaboration with New Dynamic Records (to take place in January) 4. Being able to give access to the under-served and under-priviledged in our last Opera Project (including busing in families from an in-between home) 5. Being able to once again raise musicians' and staff stipends GOALS: 1. To improve the fiscal health of the organization by increasing the amount of money in savings/reserves 2. To continue to increase staff and musicians' stipends in an effort to meet standard wages within the field 3. The partner up with a larger number of organizations within the community through sponsorship opportunities, joint performances, joint designs, etc. 4. To continue to increase audience numbers and diversity of audience members. 5. To develop a strategy for larger-scale educational programming. 2

Needs Statement 1. Better funding for additional full or part-time staff $4, 2. Union scale wages for musicians, up from current amount $5, 4. Additional funding for individual performances $1, per concert series 5. Funding for outreach and educational programs CEO/Executive Director Statement In a world where culture and society spin by in a faster whirl-wind than every before, the world of classical music has largely come to a stand-still. Organizations which we used to see as the pinacles of music-making now primarily serve the function of museums and fail to attract a younger generation. Music written 1 years ago is often still viewed as "contemporary" and music written by composers near the end of their lives is seen as relevant to today's listeners. This applies also to nearly all "new music" ensembles, who focus on the avant-garde of the early 2th century. Juventas breaks the mold by performing music that is current and relevant to our culture and society--music that reflects the here and now. Our composers are young (mostly under 35) and our audience members are young professionals in their 2s and 3s. The performances are collaborative, engaging and listener-focused. Rather than reflecting the past, Juventas is creating the art of today and forming the art of the future. Board Chair Statement Statement from the Juventas Board President, Steven Lewis I have always believed that young composers are in a Catch-22 situation - they need to get their works performed in order to develop as artists, but because they don t yet have a reputation, most companies aren t willing to perform their works. When I came across the Juventas New Music Ensemble about five years ago, I felt it was the answer to this conundrum. Juventas is dedicated to performing the works of talented young composers, who are still early in their careers. This enables them to get the exposure they need in order to grow as professionals, as well as recognition in a wider audience. One challenge we never have is enthusiasm! Everyone brings great enthusiasm to their work with Juventas, in fact composers often attend the rehearsals and the performers can interact with them directly. On the other hand, our governance challenges tend to result from our smallness and newness - we don t have easy access to many wealthy board members, as do some of the well-known and established performing organizations here in Boston. This results in a need to spend much time in fundraising and grant-writing. A related challenge is that we have a very small - mostly volunteer - staff. This requires everyone, including board members to pitch in on administrative and clerical tasks. Fortunately, the rewards for our efforts arrive very quickly, as we are able to attend the performances which we know we personally helped to make happen! Steven Lewis, President Juventas New Music Ensemble Board of Directors Newton, MA September 1, 213 Service Categories Music 3

University Residencies Description Working directly with student composers in workshops and performances of student works. Recent residencies include The Boston Conservatory, Harvard University, and Middlebury College. Budget $1, Category Population Served Program Short Term Success Program Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Education, General/Other Educational Programs College Aged (18-26 years), General/Unspecified, Student composers gain personal success and acquire knowledge. Audience members at performance receive personal enrichment and hear new music. Student composers receive valuable training and insight--we are helping to create the music of today and tomorrow. Number of residencies/students reached, attendance at performances. Positive feedback from students, returning for residency at the same institution for several years in a row. Program Comments CEO Comments Our primary challege is in raising funds for these exciting programs. Because one of our goals is to attract audience members who are new to contemporary classical music, we keep our ticket prices very, very low and offer ample student discounts, group rates, and free tickets for children and special groups. We believe in presenting only work of the highest level and want to compensate our artists and staff accordingly, but it is difficult to raise sufficient support for a smaller organization that operates on a chamber-music scale. 6

Management CEO/Executive Director Executive Director Term Start May 213 Ms. Lidiya Yankovskaya Experience When I first joined Juventas as a pianist and conductor five years ago, I was struck by the then newborn organization's incredible vitality and high level of professionalism. Since then, I have been priviledged to become the groups Music Director for three years, and most recently Artistic Director. Since stepping into my new leadership role last spring, I have been working alongside the board and staff to build our board of directors, increase funding opportunities, and continue to provide the highest possible level of artistry. Juventas has a unique mission--no other organization focuses on the training of young composers the way we do. More importantly, our collaborative performance approach has brought new audiences to exciting presentations unlike any others available in the Boston area. Co-CEO Experience Lidiya Yankovskaya's experience includes work with opera companies, symphonic orchestras, chamber ensembles, and choruses. In particular, Lidiya has become known for her interpretations of new and rarely-performed works. Currently, Lidiya also serves as Music Director at Harvard University's Lowell House Opera (the longest continuously-operating opera company in New England) and Music Director with Commonwealth Lyric Theater. She is also an affiliate scholar with the Harvard Davis Center & a member of the Lowell House Senior Common Room. In addition, she is an active pianist and coach. Lidiya regularly performs as a collaborative pianist and has served the Music Director/Pianist for Opera Boston's education tours and the cover pianist for Opera Boston's mainstage productions. She has also served as a Russian language coach for Opera Boston, Lowell House Opera, and currently, for Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Former CEOs Name Term Ms. Erin Huelskamp Aug 25 - Dec 213 Senior Staff Ms. Tammy Lynch Title Managing Director 7

She spent many years as a Senior Program Officer at the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), a non-partisan development-oriented NGO. At NDI, Lynch's portfolio included the Russia program, with an annual multi-million dollar development program including 12 employees in two countries. She served as Interim Russia Director in Moscow, and lived and worked in Ukraine during the contested 24 presidential election. Following this, she wrote for Boston University's Institute for the Study of Conflict, Ideology & Policy, the Jamestown Foundation and several publications. In addition to her work with Juventas, she now advises several non-profit organizations on community outreach, event planning and social media.
