2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Brighten Your Life...To enhance appreciation and inspire passion for the arts in our community. Background The concept for the Louisa Arts Center originated in 2004 when the Louisa Downtown Development Corporation (LDDC) a 501(c) (3) non-profit was organized to develop, fund and manage a proposed facility dedicated to fine arts, arts education, music and theatre. A Board of Directors representing community interests was established to govern the LDDC. The Directors and other committed individuals began fundraising to renovate an existing building, an historic old school. The restoration was completed in Since then, the building has housed the town of Louisa offices, the 200-seat Cooke-Haley Theatre, the Purcell Art Gallery, classrooms for arts and crafts workshops, a catering kitchen and a box office. The theatre was designed to host programs ranging from concerts and recitals to dance, drama, comedy, and films. The grand opening of the theatre took place in August of In 2013, while the Cooke-Haley Theatre continued offering well-attended musical events, lectures and professional acts, it also implemented several new programs, such as an expanded performing arts series, concerts in the park, and music and wine at sundown. The Center also began offering very popular Youth Arts Camps and visual arts classes for youth and adults. In 2015 the theatre initiated its own original production series, the Central Virginia Theatre, featuring local talent. The Center draws locally from the town and county of Louisa as well as counties surrounding Richmond, Fredericksburg and Charlottesville. Impact ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE PAST YEAR YOUTH & CHILDREN S SUMMER ARTS CAMPS Theater, Music and Art Camps are held each summer for children, ages ARTS IN EDUCATION In partnership with Louisa Public Schools, in 2017 three youth theater groups featuring professional actors performed live educational theater specifically for children. Every first grader and every sixth grader in Louisa County were bussed to the Art Center. This highly popular program dedicated to the enrichment of children, will be presented again in the coming year. COOKE-HALEY THEATER PERFORMING ARTS SERIES In the season, the Louisa Arts Center offered 10 musical artists, four live theatre performances by the Center's own Central Virginia Theatre, and three lecture/entertainment events. These events were in addition the educational performances offered under the Arts in Entertainment program. PURCELL ART GALLERY An artist run gallery aiming to exhibit and sell artwork of local and regional artists. To date over 2,000 works of art have been presented for exhibition. GOALS FOR THE CURRENT YEAR GOAL 1: Implement a multi-disciplinary program of art, education, entertainment and inclusive activities. GOAL 2: Maintain, improve and enhance the facility and equipment. GOAL 3: Increase aware of and support for the Center through effective communication. GOAL 4: Attract and nurture a competent, diverse, committed and motivated Board of Directors, staff and volunteers. GOAL 5: Attain self-sustaining financial stability. GOAL 6: Establish and maintain operating procedures and policies (SOP's). 2
3 Needs 1. FINANCIAL With the exception of one summer theater camp, all events and programs require grants, donors or sponsors in the amount of $1,000 - $5,000 per production. 2. UPGRADE THEATRICAL EQUIPMENT. Lighting and audio equipment is outdated and needs to be upgraded to meet the growing technology needs of the theatre. 3. MARKETING. The Louisa Arts Center serves the town and county of Louisa as well as neighboring counties. It is a geographically large, socio-economically diverse area with no predominant media outlets. Resources for promotion and advertising are scarce. Additionally, a significant part of the population does not have internet access the most cost effective form of communication. Events that are not well-marketed are not well attended and sometimes do not break even. We are actively seeking to expand our marketing and attract visitors from a wider geographical area. 4. THEATRICAL PRODUCTION FACILITY As the live Youth Theater and Little Theater programs grow there will be a need for a scene shop to construct sets and props. In addition, storage will be needed as the stock of scenery, props and costumes grow. Construction of a 40 x 60 steel building (cost estimate, $65,000 - $70,000) would be very useful. 5. PROGRAMMING: The Louisa Arts Center serves several very diverse demographics, including the town of Louisa, which is has families with children who frequent the Center; rural residents who often do not attend events because of lack of financial resources or distance; and residents of nearby Lake Anna, who often do not attend because of lack of knowledge about the Center's offerings. CEO/Executive Director Statement We would like to sincerely thank you loyal patrons, volunteers and supporters of the Louisa Arts Center (LAC) for your continued critical support of the Louisa Arts Center. While last fiscal year was quite the challenge with the turnover of our Executive Director position, we maintained and even expanded our programming offerings to Louisa County and the greater Central Virginia marketplace. Thousands of volunteer hours have gone into supporting the Arts Center to make it a cultural hub and beneficial economic element in the life of our schools, our businesses, and our citizens. Our board of directors and staff are passionate and dedicated to the growth and diversity of our programming for Louisa County. Our board of directors and staff are passionate and dedicated to the growth and diversity of our programming for Louisa County. Board Chair Statement The Center touches thousands of lives in Louisa County and our surrounding region. Like most community theatres, grants, charitable contributions and sponsorships are key to our ongoing operations. We keep our ticket prices low to make our performances accessible to everyone in Central Virginia and particularly families. Our ticket revenue covers only about one third of our budget. Without important, ongoing public-private partnerships, there would be no Louisa Arts Center. We are thankful for our supporters and for those who recognize what a valuable role this Center continues to play in Louisa life. Areas Of Service Areas Served Areas Statewide Other The Louisa Arts Center is located in the Town of Louisa, Louisa County. However, we attract visitors from almost all counties in Virginia as well as counties in Maryland. Service Categories Arts,Culture & Humanities NEC 3
