3 BACKGROUND & NEEDS Impact Statement During our fiscal year ending 6/30/2017 Charlotte County Habitat partnered with 29 local families helping them achieve the dream of home ownership through our Homeowner Program. This was accomplished through volunteer hours, donations from individuals, churches, and businesses plus sales at our four ReSale Stores. Charlotte County Habitat operates ReSale Stores in Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte and Englewood. Our ReSale Stores accept donated merchandise from residents and businesses in our community, and we resell the items to the public. 100% of our net store revenue goes directly into our program of providing safe, decent and affordable homes to low-income Charlotte County families. During 2016 we added a Cleanout Business to create a greater income stream to serve more families. Early in 2017 we added a fourth ReSale Store in Port Charlotte. We also participated in one Paint Your Heart Out Program. We partnered with Team Punta Gorda to paint eight qualified homes owned by low-income residents in one day. The overall goal of this Program is to help restore neighborhood community pride. As affordable housing opportunities shrink and rent rates rise, trying to find an affordable place to live is almost impossible for many working class residents. Our goal is to partner with 30 families as they work to achieve the dream of home ownership, help additional qualified low-income homeowners with repairs, continue increasing our ReSale Store sales to generate revenue to help local residents, and continue creating affordable housing for low-income Charlotte County residents. Needs Statement Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity volunteers and donors are instrumental in improving the lives of low income families within our community and are valued by our organization. Whether swinging a hammer, stocking store inventory, helping at a special event or answering phones in our office, we have a place for volunteer skills and talents throughout the year. Our experienced staff provides the necessary training. Contact our affiliate if you'd like more information. Our affiliate is currently in need of the following items: 120 drop-down projector screen to display videos and slide shows relating to our projects - $ Tent to use at our external events - $ Video camera with an external microphone outlet to be used to record our events, work site progress, home dedications, and to share the information with current and future supporters - $ We also welcome financial donations to cover the cost of building materials, supplies and professional site supervision. Ninety-one (91) cents of every donated dollar is used in our programs. Background Statement Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity is a Christian organization committed to providing safe, decent and affordable homes to those in need in our community. We strongly believe that everyone should have the opportunity to achieve the "American Dream" of owning their own home. We also believe children should have the opportunity to grow up in a safe and stable environment. Our Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity affiliate was created 30 years ago on 8/10/2987 by Samuel Emerick. Sam was the first President of the Board of Habitat International. He continued to support Habitat's goals and served in an advisory role on our Board of Directors until he passed away in December His passing was a loss to our affiliate and the entire community. Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity works to raise all of our funds locally. Our affiliate operates four ReSale Stores - one in Punta Gorda, two in Port Charlotte and one in Englewood. These stores help generate needed 3
4 revenue for Charlotte County Habitat to continue providing homes in our community. What the poor need is capital and co-workers; what the rich need is a wise and honorable way of divesting themselves of their overabundance. Money comes from gifts shared by those who feel they have more than they need and from non-interest bearing loans from those who cannot afford to make a gift but want to provide working capital for the disinherited. Through the work of Habitat, low-income families find new hope in the form of affordable housing. Churches, community groups and others have joined together to successfully tackle a significant social problem. Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity has served over 383 families since Statement from the Board Chair It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the President of the Board of Director s for Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity. Through years of service as a regular Board member and on multiple committees, I learned that this Habitat for Humanity affiliate is exceptional. It has a dynamic leadership team headed by our CEO, Mike Mansfield, as well as a dedicated and committed staff. I am continually amazed at what this organization is able to accomplish given the size of the community it serves. This organization s performance is a testament to the citizens of Charlotte County who so ardently support it. Guiding Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity is a terrific collection of people serving on the Board of Directors. The present Board is a diverse group comprised of several long-standing members with a tremendous amount of institutional knowledge, together with many new members who inject fresh energy and ideas into the Board s vision. Over the past several years, the Board has undergone a transformation with a greater emphasis on governance and development. That transformation has led the Board to focus on identifying and developing opportunities to sustain and grow the outstanding service Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity has shown. The Board recognizes that achieving sustainability regardless of the conditions of the larger economy is essential to the organization s continued superior performance. Although our affiliate has been tremendously successful in providing quality and affordable housing for many, the need for our services remains great. With average home rents in Charlotte County approaching, and some areas surpassing, $ per month, decent housing is becoming unattainable for more and more families. Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity s mission is to meet this growing need, and end the cycle of poverty caused by substandard housing. I look forward to contributing to the success of that mission. Statement from the CEO/Executive Director Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit, low income housing provider, has been dedicated to eliminating substandard housing in Charlotte County through a needs-based home ownership program for the past 30 years. We believe in a "hand up" not a "hand out" philosophy. Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity partners with families on their journey to home ownership and a better life. Families provide sweat equity, complete home ownership classes, pay an escrow down payment, and then pay back an affordable mortgage. Along with our Homeownership Program, Habitat performs neighborhood revitalization working with other Charlotte County non-profit agencies. Habitat helps families and individuals with minor home repairs and exterior painting. Our Program changes lives as well as communities. We take great pride at Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity in our fiscal responsibility. Ninety-one (91) cents of every donated dollar goes directly into our program. We are able to achieve this through the many dedicated donors and volunteers who help keep our overhead down. Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity has an amazing group of Board members who are all very committed to the Habitat mission. One hundred percent (100%) of our Board contributes financially to our organization. They are highly engaged and also provide tremendous guidance and oversight making our organization very successful. We also have dedicated staff who believe in the Habitat mission. Many staff members are also donors and 4
5 volunteers, and some are Habitat homeowners, who believe that Habitat is a lifestyle not a job. Our organization is unique in the fact that day in and day out our staff is constantly adapting to the needs of the families we serve. They continuously search out new and innovative ways to help families with housing solutions. Our motto is "one more family". It does not matter what goal is set for our staff, we will always try and help one more family and find the resources to do so. Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity is truly blessed to have so many dedicated individuals who believe and support the Habitat mission. We are committed to working diligently until every family has a simple, decent home. This year we will be celebrating 30 years of service to Charlotte County. We will build 30 homes from slab to completion for families in need of affordable housing opportunities. Please join us as we continue our mission. 6 PROGRAMS Homeowner Program Description Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity, a Christian ministry, welcomes all. Our family selection is made by a committee of local business personnel and residents, which bases their decisions on the following criteria: Applicants must have a need for housing, must have lived or worked in Charlotte County, FL for 12 months, must be U.S. Citizens or have Permanent Resident Alien immigration status, must be willing to partner with our affiliate, and must have the ability to pay. If you would like to enable our affiliate to help additional qualified residents achieve home ownership, financial contributions can be mailed to our office (1750 Manzana Avenue, Punta Gorda FL 33950) or made through our website: If you are interested in volunteering at our construction build sites, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at or by at brenda@charlottecountyhfh.org. Budget $2,700, Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Housing, General/Other Affordable Housing Adults Families Poor,Economically Disadvantaged,Indigent Individuals who qualify for the Charlotte County Habitat Homeowner Program attend classes to learn budgeting and homeowner skills that will be useful throughout their lives. They also are required to complete sweat equity hours by helping construct their own homes or other homes, or by utilizing their skills handling other affiliate responsibilities. Completing their sweat equity hours often provides the individual a true feeling of commitment and achievement. Our Habitat Homeowner Program is not a giveaway program. We consider it a hand up and not a hand out. In addition to an escrow deposit and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (sweat equity) building their Habitat home and the homes of others. Charlotte County Habitat currently manages 260 mortgages. We have a homeowner retention rate of 98%, and we work closely with struggling families to give them the opportunity to succeed. Our family partners often continue volunteering at Habitat after they are in their homes as a way of giving back to the organization and community. By doing so, they help future Habitat homeowners reach their goals. The success of the Charlotte County Habitat Homeowner Program is monitored through the ability of our family partners to maintain their homes and remain current in their mortgage payments. We know our family partners work hard to purchase their homes, and we partner with our homeowners ongoing. 6
7 Program Success Examples During our fiscal year Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity helped 29 families achieve home ownership. Our goal is to help 30 families. On average we receive 75 new inquiries per month regarding our program. Our staff works with the interested parties to determine whether they meet the required qualifications. Once a party is eligible and approved by our Board, they begin working on their sweat equity. The Charlotte County Habitat Homeowner Program has allowed individuals who previously lost homes due to unexpected circumstances to once again become proud homeowners. Our Program has also provided individuals paying high rent the ability to work toward and become owners of safe, affordable homes resulting in better living conditions for their families. Our affiliate has partnered with over 383 families during the past 30 years as they worked to become home owners. 7
