The Library s vision is for a community engaged in a lifetime of discovery, and private donations help Lexingtonians learn and play in dynamic new ways. Donations do not fund day-to-day library operations, meaning that 100% of your gift is used to create change by adding new services, programs, facilities, or technology. Because the Library serves all people, businesses and organizations, your charitable donation to the Library Foundation is quite literally a gift to our entire community. 3 Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement Lexington Public Library Foundation funds innovation within our public library system. Background Statement The Lexington Public Library has been serving the educational and entertainment needs of Fayette County since Though it has changed a lot over the years, the library is a public resource for everyone to enjoy, regardless of what interests them. In May 1997, the Lexington Public Library Foundation was established to seek outside funds that would enhance the quality and range of Library services beyond the level that can be provided by county funding. The Foundation helps the Library keep up with a rapidly-changing society and expand beyond traditional library services. Impact Statement "The Library gives people access to things that make their world a little bigger and a little brighter. Jenny Lewis, Northside Branch Manager Support from the Library Foundation empowers change within our public library system. Recent examples include: Phoenix Forward: Indoor/Outdoor programming and installations at Central Library and adjacent Phoenix Park to reinvigorate the downtown spaces through the Knight Cities Challenge. Highlights include the new Discovery and Play Lab at Central Library, two mobile book carts to bring materials into the Park, and a Charlie Cart, or portable teaching kitchen, to teach culinary literacy at Central Library, Phoenix Park, and throughout the city. Partners include Lexington Downtown Development Authority, Lexington Parks & Recreation, Downtown Lexington Corporation, Blue Grass Community Foundation, Knight Foundation, and many others. Tiny Library Project: Commissioned 50 book exchange units to be placed throughout the community in order to improve access to reading materials. Partners include Nomi Design, The Hope Center, Parks & Recreation, and many others. Homework Help: Provides an afterschool snack and assists students with school assignments and reading at two library locations four days each week throughout the school year. Partners include Fayette County Public Schools, Glean Kentucky, God s Pantry Food Bank, and KentuckyOne Health. 3

4 Needs Statement 1. We are currently conducting a capital campaign to expand the library system to meet the needs of our growing community. 2. In October 2017, Lexington Public Library announced the Tiny Library Project, an initiative to place 50 librarysponsored book exchange units throughout the city. These Tiny Libraries will provide convenient access to books and reading materials in high-traffic areas not readily served by one of our six library locations. The units were designed specifically for our community by the local team at Nomi Design and will be maintained through partnership with the Friends of the Library. Donors may sponsor a unit for $250, and anyone may apply to host one of the units at their home or business. More information is available at 3. Want to make a difference in a child's life? Volunteer for the Homework Help program! Monday-Thursday evenings from 4-7pm at the Northside and Village Branches. You don't need a background in education, just the desire to help a child learn and grow. 4. Do you have a special skill that others may enjoy? Contact us if you would be willing to lead a program to share your talents with others! We partner with a variety of individuals, professionals, and outside organizations to offer many of our adult and youth programs. At Lexington Public Library, we strive to serve our entire community. Our extensive collection of adult, children's, print and digital materials appeal to a broad range of readers, and we also offer a great collection "downloadable" e-books, e-magazines, movies, and music. Check it out at From our popular storytimes for children, to career-building skills for job-seekers, to mobile outreach services to those unable to come to the library, there truly is something for everyone at the Lexington Public Library. We invite you to join us today!-ann Hammond, Executive Director of Lexington Public Library "Libraries have been and will continue to be important learning and education facilities for communities. A library's mission offers incredible intellectual growth to any size community. They are an important lifestyle feature to any town. To that end our Foundation will work to create funding for the growth and expansion of that mission in our town - Lexington."
