Statements Mission The mission of the Bethany Improvement Foundation is to benefit the community of Bethany, Oklahoma through charitable projects. Background The organization began in vember, 2008 as the Bethany Centennial History Committee. It was converted to the Bethany Improvement Foundation in 2010 and incorporated as a 501c3 charitable organization.the Bethany Improvement Foundation is organized exclusively for charitable purposes to benefit the citizens of Bethany, Oklahoma, to receive funds (grants, memberships, sponsorships, sales receipts, and contributions) through the sponsorship of projects, events, and activities which promote the improvement of Bethany, Oklahoma. In 2009, the 20-member Bethany Centennial History Committee wrote, published, and sold 546 copies of the 256-page hardback, full-color Bethany Centennial History Book. The committee professionally recorded numerous oral histories of Bethany s founding families, adding those tapes to the Bethany Library and the Oklahoma Voices state-wide project. In 2010, the first Bethany historical murals were painted on buildings at Route 66 and Asbury. In 2011, the Bethany Improvement Foundation sponsored the first Bethany 66 Festival, to celebrate our heritage.the collection of over 300 family stories, as well as the histories of Bethany s churches, schools, businesses, colleges, and city made the city more aware of and interested in its heritage. The committee was approached about doing centennial murals, but we didn t feel we could take on any more projects until the book and oral histories were complete. There is enthusiasm about the Bethany Murals Project because of Bethany s location on historic Route 66 (our Main Street) and the fact that the famous muralist, Dr. Bob Palmer, lives in Bethany but has not painted any murals here. The first historic murals were painted on walls of two buildings at Route 66 and Asbury in May, 2010, additional murals were painted at Route 66 and College. Two additional murals were painted in 2013; one additional mural in Capital funds are being solicited for the renovation and enlarging of the Bethany Library ($2.5 million project) and the Billboard Museum on Route 66. A memorial to police chaplain Wally Renegar is near completion at the Bethany Police Station, with a sculpture by Scott Stearman to be installed before the end of $2,000 is needed for the maintenance and completion of the landscaping and drainage for the Renegar project. Impact The association shall receive funds (grants, membership, sponsorships, sales receipts, and contributions) through the sponsorship of projects, events and activities which promote the improvement of Bethany, Oklahoma. These funds will be used for charitable community projects, including, but not limited to, the painting of murals on buildings and walls in Bethany, the Bethany 66Festival, tourism, Billboard Museum, and the Bethany Library Building Fund. All funds, whether income or principal, and whether acquired by gift or contribution or otherwise, shall be devoted to said purposes. Needs Bethany Depot Plaza - $250,000 a community performance and farmer's market venue in downtown Bethany; Bethany Murals Project - $2500 to $5000 each for murals for downtown businesses, Bethany Library Renovation and Expansion - $2.5 million; Billboard Museum - $5,000 or volunteer services for business plan, $2 million in capital funds for land acquisition and construction. $2,000 for completion of the Wally Renegar Memorial landscaping and drainage. CEO/Executive Director Statement The Bethany Improvement Foundation was organized to give people a place to leave a legacy gift for Bethany's improvement. Our first projects have been the Bethany Centennial History Book, Bethany Murals, Bethany 66 Festival, formation of the Billboard Museum, design of the Bethany Depot Plaza, and oral histories. We are working with tour companies to bring bus trips to Bethany. Future plans include construction of a downtown performance venue, and renovated/enlarged public library. 2
