1 Cherry Callahan NASPA Fundatin Bard Chair Reprt fr the 2012 Winter Bard f Directrs Meeting Nvember 2, 2012 NASPA Bard Actin Items MOU Between NASPA and NASPA Fundatin fr Fundraising Psitin NASPA Missin T be the principal surce fr leadership, schlarship, prfessinal develpment, and advcacy fr students. Leadership The NASPA Fundatin had its Fall 2012 meeting September in Prtland, Maine. The days were filled with hard wrk and wnderfully cllabrative and challenging discussins. A number f key decisins were made that will be summarized in the fllwing bulleted pints accmpanied by ther bullets nting accmplishments and prgress tward the Fundatin s Strategic Plan. Jan Winnifrd agreed t chair the Bard s Nminatins Cmmittee charged t develp a slate f individuals t be cnsidered fr Fundatin Bard membership in the cming year. Electins fr new Bard members will ccur in December. Other cmmittee members are Prakash Mathew and Kevin Bailey. The cmmittee is using a new set f guidelines develped by a cmmittee (als including Jan and Prakash) that were adpted at the September Bard meeting. These guidelines frmalized what had heretfre been an infrmal prcess with n financial requirements. A minimum giving level f the Diamnd Club was established fr new Bard members and prspective Bard members will be infrmed f this requirement. Als included in the dcuments apprved at the September meeting were Expectatins f NASPA Fundatin Bard Members which are nw a part f an evlving Handbk fr Fundatin Bard members. The NASPA Fundatin will celebrate its 40 th Anniversary at the Orland Annual Cnference. A cmmittee led by Gage Paine is wrking n sme great ideas fr ur celebratin in Orland. Others serving n this cmmittee are Nancy Crimmin, Kathleen Cramer, Lri White, Charltte

2 Tulls, Lucy Frt, and Kevin Kruger. LJ will cnsider the pssibility f including sme element f this celebratin in the Orland Opening Sessin. A frmal rientatin prgram fr new Fundatin Bard members will be intrduced t this year s newly elected members. It will begin with an intrductin hused in the Leadership Prtal featuring an Orientatin PwerPint develped by Frank Ardail. It will cntinue with a special sessin fr new members prir t the March Fundatin Bard meeting with additinal materials available in the handbk currently being develped. A majr decisin was made t prepare the Fundatin fr an upcming campaign (beginning date yet t be determined). This decisin was t hire a Develpment Officer wh will crdinate the Fundatin s fundraising effrts n a fulltime basis and in crdinatin with the Fundatin Bard and NASPA staff. The psitin descriptin is cmplete and advertising is underway. Hpefully, we can have smene n bard in January and he/she will be with us in Orland fr ur Bard meeting. This decisin was carefully weighed in light f the current financial assets f the Fundatin which have declined in the past year, and the final decisin was tugh but unanimusly accepted. In this prcess, Larry Dietz and Frank Ardail agreed t fllw up with thse wh pledged in the last campaign wh have nt cmpleted their pledge in an effrt t bring thse mnies int the Fundatin. The Pillars prcess is well underway thanks t Barb Snyder and fundraising effrts are in full swing. This year s Pillar class includes the fllwing: Peg Blake, Humbldt State University Je Buchanan, Tidewater Cmmunity Cllege Barbara Fienman, Sufflk University Jill Halvaks, University f Califrnia, Irvine Edward Hammnd, Frt Hays State University Shaun Harper, University f Pennsylvania Rbert Kelly, Lyla University Chicag Rbert Page, Metrplitan Cmmunity Cllege, Penn Valley Mary Skrheim, University f Utah Sharyn Slavin Miller, Azusa Pacific University James Studer, Texas State University - San Marcs Victr Yanitelli (in memriam), Saint Peter's Cllege Jim Rhatigan was named the Distinguished Pillar fr this upcming year in recgnitin f his lifelng cmmitment t ur prfessin. Kathleen Cramer is hard at wrk updating and cmpleting the histry f the NASPA Fundatin fr the purpses f educating the membership abut its rigin and purpse as well as bring int fcus the legacy that was created by Jhn Blackburn wh passed away this past summer. She is

3 wrking with a graduate student at Bwling Green wh is examining the archives t bring this infrmatin t light. As a part f digging up histry, it has been realized that in 2006 the Fundatin Grants Prgram was named fr Channing Briggs. This naming has nt been used. Thus the naming was reaffirmed and the website has been updated t reflect this. Frank Ardail presented a draft Naming Plicy fr the Bard s cnsideratin. This has becme increasingly imprtant as mre initiatives are being created and funded. This plicy was accepted by the Bard. The Fundatin Bard apprved the Memrandum f Understanding with NASPA as it des annually. Schlarship As the Bard knws, The NASPA Fundatin supprts the advancement f knwledge cncerning students, higher educatin institutins, and issues facing the student affairs prfessin. Thrugh the cntributins f NASPA Student Affairs Administratrs in Higher Educatin, members and friends, the Fundatin has established an investment prgram and restricted endwments that prvide supprt fr NASPA awards, prfessinal develpment prgrams, reginal activities, and research prjects. There are tw prcesses fr research grant pprtunities nw in place and funded thrugh and by the Fundatin. The first is the Channing Briggs Small Grant Prgram. Five grants were awarded at the September Bard meeting based n recmmendatins frm the Grants Cmmittee chaired by Linda Kuk. Other members f the cmmittee were Brian Spnsler, Sandy Scherrens (Fundatin Bard member), Cedric Cnell Hackett, Larry Rper, Larry Dietz (Fundatin Bard member), Laura Ketchum-Ciftci, and Sharyn Slavin Miller. The five grants awarded were: 1. Self-authrship amng active student affairs prfessinals/ Bradley Cx /$5, Engaging and retaining abriginal students in university by transfrming awareness and envirnment/ Ann Gdlewska /$5, All in the family: The imprtance f utility and integrating families in the c-curricular cllege experience/ Tby Jenkins / $2, The cntinual natinal measurement and assessment f student affairs cmpetencies/ Rishi Sriram / $3, Defining and describing the cntemprary student vet ppulatin /David Vacchi /$5,000 The secnd grant prgram is the Large Grant Funds. The guidelines fr this prgram were develped in cllabratin with the NASPA Faculty Fellws and the NASPA Research Divisin and were apprved by the Fundatin Bard at the September meeting. These grants will be designed t supprt the discvery f new knwledge, new applicatins f thery t practice and innvatin in the field f student affairs. The maximum award will be $30,000 annually (can be renewed fr a secnd year up t a ttal f $60,000 fr an entire prject). An RFP will be develped and marketed t the prfessin at

4 the beginning f the grant prpsal request prcess. This RFP will be develped by the NASPA Fundatin Bard in cnsultatin with NASPA leadership. As already nted in this reprt, the Bard is cncerned abut the current financial reprts and decided that the RFP planned fr marketing in January 2013 be deferred fr anther year. This was a difficult decisin but ne that had t be made. Advcacy The Fundatin Bard made prgress in diversifying its Bard in the last year, but the Nminatins Cmmittee is cmmitted t cntinuing that effrt in the cming Bard electin. The Channing Briggs small grant prgram nted abve is indicative f hw the Fundatin supprts student success and student learning. Bth the Briggs grant prgram and the large grant prgram are related t Student Affairs Advcacy. These prcesses will invlve Brian Spnslr as we identify ways in which we can supprt the imprtant wrk that he is ding and identify prgrams that are critical t ur prfessin and fundable. NASPA Strategic Plan Gal 1 1. Build the capacity t create knwledge and use data t prvide evidence that will supprt excellence in practice. 1.1 Be the primary surce f data n the experience f cllege and university students. Prvided $20,000 in grant funding t five NASPA members wh will be required t share their findings with the Assciatin thrugh presentatin at the Annual Cnference, n the website, and/r article submissin t NASPA publicatins. 1.2 Demnstrate the impact f student affairs n student learning, persistence, and success thrugh schlarship, assessment, evaluatin, and research. Findings frm grant funded prjects will shed light n these tpics. 1.3 Tighten and align the cnnectins amng thery, research, and practice. Grant funded prjects will allw fr this bjective 1.4 Enhance skills and prvide tls t cnduct student affairs prgram reviews in supprt f best practice and institutinal effectiveness. Tw f the five grants awarded will address issues in supprt f this bjective.

5 Gal 2 2. Lead advcacy effrts that shape the changing landscape f higher educatin. 2.1 Assert NASPA's leadership rle in critical issues f public plicy regarding higher educatin. The Fundatin will supprt the NASPA agenda and wrk cllabratively with Brian Spnslr n the Institute. This may include future funding fr these initiatives when funds are available. 2.2 Define, adpt, and cmmunicate a public stance n critical plicy issues in higher educatin. 2.3 Build capacity amng membership in rder t effectively influence public plicy. 2.4 Track state and reginal issues that might significantly affect students, practitiners, and/r campuses. Gal 3 3. Launch an initiative t cllabrate with student affairs wrldwide. 3.1 Cnduct a needs assessment t guide and priritize NASPA's internatinal effrts. 3.2 Clarify NASPA's niche in internatinal student affairs. 3.3 Prvide cntext-apprpriate prfessinal develpment activities t imprve knwledge and skills f student affairs prfessinals bth dmestic and abrad. Gal 4 4. Strengthen NASPA by making it a mre respnsive, vital and sustainable rganizatin. 4.1 Diversify and strengthen the surces f NASPA s revenue. The hiring f a develpment ffice will facilitate the Fundatin s realizatin f this bjective. Research will begin in earnest n ptential new crprate partners as well as reaching ut t SSAOs and new members. Celebrating the 40 th Anniversary f the Fundatin Bard s establishment by Jhn Blackburn will be a highlight f the Orland cnference with a gal t strengthen the membership s awareness f hw imprtant it is t give t the prfessin. 4.2 Increase cllabratin and partnerships with higher educatin and ther rganizatins. 4.3 Review and redefine the rles and respnsibilities f the NASPA President, Executive Directr, Reginal Vice Presidents, and Bard structure and cmpsitin. 4.4 Increase pprtunities fr innvatin thrugh technlgy. 4.5 Strengthen NASPA s cntributins t student affairs graduate preparatin prgrams. 4.6 Ensure the participatin and inclusin f NASPA s members in leadership and gvernance.

6 The Fundatin Bard is an active Bard with members assuming multiple new rles. Members participatin is increasing and will cntinue t increase as we mve int a mre active fundraising mde. 4.7 Examine resurces and staffing t ensure alignment with strategic planning gals. The creatin f a develpment fficer will allw the Fundatin t increase financial resurces t supprt NASPA and t prvide full-time supprt t the vlunteer Bard in this prcess. The Fundatin Bard is mving frward in addressing its wn Strategic Plan and substantial prgress has been made. The Plan was included in the July 2012 Fundatin Reprt t the NASPA Bard.
