Mission & Impact Statements Mission Make Nashville is Nashville's first 501c3 non-profit makerspace. We support designers, engineers, artists and hobbyists of all ages in the sharing of ideas, knowledge, and resources. We are dedicated to the three b's: building, bending, and breaking. Our members host workshops, meetings, open-builds, events, and special performances. Background The Maker Movement always evolving and has been known by many different names over the years: inventors, artists, builders, designers, and many many more. Make Nashville has been meeting since It initially was to be a regular meetup group for people interested in engaging in creating a very wide range of projects, including electronics, woodworking, metal, arts, and media. Make Nashville encourages innovation, collaboration and inspiration through these meetings. For the past four years, Make Nashville has partnered with the Adventure Science Center to host the Nashville Mini Maker Faire. The one-day event showcases the works of nearly 100 individual local makers. During the summer of 2015, a group of Make Nashville members decided to increase the impact of the organization by regularly meeting and tackling strategic planning for the group s expansion. Plans included opening a makerspace, hosting workshops, forming an official 501c3 organization and becoming a resource and hub for those who are interested in learning about fabrication and design through workshops and hands-on experiences. At the end of 2015, the 100 Founders fundraising campaign was launched by the organization in order to raise the capital needed to start operations and pay rent in a makerspace until membership can be grown to support the space. The goal was to get 100 individuals to chip in $100 a piece toward the goal by the end of the year. $10,000 was raised, with a matching promise of $10,000, for a total of $20,000 in funding for the group. Our founders exceeded the goal and found the current location. It is an important part of the Make Nashville mission to be accessible to individuals of all economic and cultural backgrounds. Sponsorships for those in need are important to this collective, and engagement through partnership with other non-profit organizations is also a priority. Presently, the group is made up of over 25 regular volunteers, 7 board members, 65 members, and several community supporters who meet weekly and work on a consistent basis to make progress toward the group s goals. A two-day retreat weekend was held in January of 2018, where the group solidified its mission and defined the direction the organization would move toward for the next 5 years. Make Nashville s leadership includes a diverse group of engineers, programmers, designers, artists, educators, accountants, event and project management professionals. 2
Impact During , Make Nashville has: Co-hosted with the Wondr'y at Vanderbilt University, the growing 5th annual Nashville Mini Maker Faire: a twoday festival with artists, engineers, designers and tinkerers of all backgrounds. Manages & Funds Nashville's First Non-profit Makerspace in East Nashville, a 10,000 square foot facility dedicated to science, technology, engineering, arts, manufacturing, design and learning of all sorts. Realized success with our first major fundraising campaign. The 100 founders campaign raised $10,000 in funding, with a $10,000 matched donation by a local donor. Hosted & Ran the Southeast Makers Alliance Conference Hosted over 200 workshops, meet-ups & youth classes on topics ranging from woodworking, CNC routing, 3D printing, sewing, electronics, ceramics, arts, welding and fabrication. Hosted & Led 3D Thursdays event to engage more people in learning 3D modeling and printing. Started a collaborative meetup where we open our doors to anyone in the community who is working on fabrication/design projects on Friday nights for our weekly "Community Build Night" Hosted community meetups for other local non-profits such as the Nashville VR, Hypericon, Arts, Robotics, Gaming and various Meetup Groups Hosted Nashville's third annual 3D printed art show. Partnering with local and national companies to provide STEAM classes to Nashville's youth. The goals of include: Continued growth of the Nashville Mini Maker Faire into the first Maker Faire in our region - meaning, increasing our attendance to over 10,000 individuals and over 200 vendors/displays. Extending the reach of the event to showcase, a wider range of student led works, projects and experiences. Expanding our workshops offerings to include more youth and children's programming. Completing two large community projects (one large-scale art project and one community service project) within the calendar year.starting a capital campaign to fund moving into a larger makerspace in Needs Our most pressing needs include: Funding for tools - approximately $10,000 for new equipment and raw materials We offer our membership use of professional grade tools that are safe. We would like to invest in a laser cutter, woodworking tools, electronics equipment (soldering irons, etc), computers and software etc. Workshop development Identifying additional instructors and guide them to develop workshops, on topics that local makers are interested in learning. This includes both adult and youth programming. Leadership development Working with and training our core volunteers, to help build their business, project management and group leadership skills. Funding for a full-time Executive Director and 2 part-time staff - $70,000 We need to hire a full-time operations manager for the facility, a part-time bookkeeper, and a part-time administrative assistant. Space identification and procurement The Nashville market is competitive at the present time. Our biggest need, by far, is to locate a larger space that has enough room (>15,000 sf), that is within our budget, has ample parking (25 regular spaces with the ability to expand to 100+ for special events) and sufficient power. 3

Service Categories Primary Organization Category Arts,Culture & Humanities / Arts Education Secondary Organization Category Science & Technology / Engineering & Technology Tertiary Organization Category Youth Development / Youth Development Programs Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Davidson TN - Williamson TN - Wilson TN - Rutherford TN We serve individuals in and around the Greater Nashville area. Our makerspace is within the 440 loop, and busaccessible, within a 10-minute bus ride from downtown. We are located in the 5 Points Area of East Nashville. Board Chair Statement Growing Make Nashville and fulfilling our mission is certainly a labor of love. In the first three years of our existence it took every ounce of effort that a small group of volunteers could spare to put on what has become a very successful annual Nashville Mini Maker Faire. The original purpose of organizing the Faire, however, was to help spur and connect the Maker community in Nashville. Starting in 2015 we began very deliberately growing the leadership and volunteer force needed to broaden our scope and creating more opportunities for meetings, workshops, demonstrations, performances, and Making throughout the year. We also realized that we d have to open a Makerspace/FabLab that would be open to the public in order to achieve our goals. 4
Fortunately for us, the maker community is very DIY (Do It Yourself) oriented and many leaders rose to the occasion. Since Summer of 2015 we ve been meeting weekly and tackling all kinds of challenges including event planning, fundraising, site selection, formation of our non-profit entity, logistics, volunteer recruitment and management, and many more. It s been challenging. Most of us want to Make, and becoming organizers and leaders in our community gets in the way of that. But it also allows us to be part of creating a much bigger and more vibrant community where we can share the transformation of Making with others. As we ve grown, we ve had to face the challenges of how to manage a lot more volunteers, manage fundraising and other communications campaigns, keep track of members, donors, vendors, and other stakeholders. We ve had to improve our website and our capabilities. We ve installed CiviCRM and are in the process of using it to centralize all of our contact management and communications. We have switched to a professional project and workflow management system for tracking tasks, projects, and assignments. We ve also improved our governance. We installed a formal board. We held a retreat and created a strategic and tactical plans. We ve put in place financial controls and recordkeeping. We have created committees with specific individuals tasked to recruit volunteers to do the work needed to grow the organization. There was a time when a few individuals did all the work of Make Nashville. We ve expanded that in an organized manner and hope to continue to recruit people to help us increase our capabilities and our reach. All of this with parttime volunteer labor. One of our goals for 2016 is to raise enough funds to have a few paid staff, including at least one full-time paid position. Finally, we re starting to hire outside help to make us more focused and efficient. We recently hired a firm to aid us in site selection and negotiation for our future Makerspace. Hiring others to do work does not come naturally to a group of DIY-ers but we are growing as an organization and appreciate your help in achieving our goals to transform our community. 5
CEO Statement Making is a profoundly transformative experience on many levels. At the individual level, Making provides experiences and knowledge that can transform a person s career, their outlook on life, their ability to communicate and relate to others, and their ability to make individual contributions to society. At the community level, Making provides a focal point that allows people to share their knowledge, their passion, and their time to each other. It also provides families, groups of friends, co-workers, and other groups a way to bond over creative work and play. At the city and regional level, Making helps improve neighborhoods, creates economic opportunity, trains a skilled workforce, and helps promote harmony across diverse communities of people. From a scientific and cultural perspective, Making advances the state of the art through invention and repurposing as well as provides opportunities for creative expression and the enhancement of places and objects of art. Make Nashville is unique in that it brings together people with many skills and many different objectives into a community that brings about this Transformation. Artists, Inventors, Entrepreneurs, Hobbyists, Costume and Fashion Designers, Filmmakers, Woodworkers, Metalworkers, Rapid Prototypers, Circuit Designers, Roboticists, Manufacturers, Dads, Moms, Kids, and many others all participate in the community and share their skills, experiences, and viewpoints. Everybody wins. Make Nashville is fortunate to represent the epicenter of Maker culture for Nashville and the Middle Tennessee area. To grow this community we help Makers showcase their works, we help Makers share their knowledge, and soon we will run a facility where Makers can teach, showcase, demonstrate, perform, and just plain Make. We want to help more people make and help makers make more. Transformation of people, places, communities, our city, our region, and our economy will occur as a result. 6
Programs Programs Maker-In-Residence Description Make Nashville seeks to create unique learning and interactive experiences, giving artists the opportunity to take on residences within our space and allowing them to guide creative projects. This is a fairly new program that we are working to grow. Budget Category Population Served Short Term Success Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success $2,000 Annually Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Artists-in-Residence Adults, K-12 (5-19 years), By working as a community on an art installation and supporting the work of a local artist, the group has grown to become more collaborative. Shared knowledge allows individuals within the group to advance in their individual discipline(s). The artist(s) involved are able to produce works that they wouldn't ordinarily be able to take on by themselves, and the community benefits from the experience of the art work. Presently, we don't have tracking for this program. The project that was undertaking was successful, and we are looking forward to extending this in 2016 as a more formal program. Presently, we don't have success tracking measures implemented. As we are just starting on this endeavor, we need to formalize our application process, and define the commitment terms for artists who enter our space to use it for large-scale projects. Last summer, we supported the creation of an immersive dome. While monetary funding wasn't able to be offered toward the project, the maker group successfully erected a 15 ft. miniature planetarium, with the intent of extending the project for immersive art works at future events. 7
Youth Makers Description We have cultivated a group of young makers (elementary through High School) that take classes, make in-house projects, teach others and work collaboratively with makers of all ages on group projects. This will include summer weeklong camps in STEAM subjects. This group is currently forming their own youth advisory board for the makerspace. Budget Category Population Served Short Term Success Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Education, General/Other Extracurricular Math & Science At-Risk Populations, K-12 (5-19 years), Poor,Economically Disadvantaged,Indigent We hope to kick off 3 weeks of summer camps this July to promote learning and individual projects in coding, 3D printing, woodworking, metalshop, media, costuming, sewing, and the arts. By the end of the summer program each student (approx 100) will have learned several new hands-on skills. We strive to bring STEAM classes to Nashville youth no matter the ability to afford classes or summer camps. We hope to introduce STEAM and making to 1,000 new youth this year with this program. We will have feedback surveys from the families and each child will be encouraged to present their project (in-progress or completed) to their group. New program CEO Comments 8
