2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission The purpose of Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue Inc. (YTNR) is to rescue abandoned, lost, abused or unwanted Yorkshire Terriers. This includes getting appropriate medical evaluations and treatment, providing foster care and placement evaluations of any and all Yorkies taken in rescue by YTNR, and finding suitably screened and evaluated homes for rescued Yorkshire Terriers. YTNR also works to provide public education about its resuce work and to raise funds to pay for care of rescued Yorkshire Terriers taken in by YTNR. Background Our goal is to save as many little dogs as possible. Since March of 2000 Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue has rescued and placed in forever homes dogs. Most of these dogs have special needs, sometimes extensive rehabilitation, and every dog is spayed/neutered and micro-chipped before they are placed. Due to the economy and the rising costs of living our private donations have fallen way off in the last serveral years and we are having to go into our limited savings fund to stay up and running. So far this year we are operating at a loss of over $3,000. Last year we had a loss of $10,000. If we continue in this manner we fear YTNR will no longer be able to do the good work we have been able to do for well over 13 years. Impact We have rescued 117 dogs this past year. We have placed 82 of these rescues in forever homes. We have spayed/neutered 36 dogs to date this year. Our goal is to place the remaining 35 dogs in forever homes and rescue as many as possible this coming year. Needs Spay & Neuter fee's (ranging from $45 - $250 each) Dental expenses, including cleaning and extractions (ranging from $69 - $1400 each) Expensive corrective surgeries such as Liver Shunt disease (ranging from $1,500 - $2,500 each), neck surgeries (ranging from $1,500 - $1,700) luxating patellas (ranging from $250 - $750) Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer There are links on our website on how to donate. If you'd like to volunteer there is an application on our website. If you would like to adopt a dog there is also an application for that on our website. We accept paypal donations as well as bank drafts and we also accept checks by mail. Thanks to all who support YTNR! 3 TN - Dickson YTNR is a National Rescue organization. Board Chair Statement The success of the organization is attributable, in large part, to the expertise and the passion of the leadership team. YTNR s governance structure is comprised of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and three members at large. The current leadership includes a nationally recognized expert on Yorkshire Terriers, President Mary Elizabeth Dugmore. Dugmore has established a variety of mechanisms to help educate the public and raise awareness about Yorkshire Terriers and other small breeds, and she actively maintains these resources in order to keep them up to date with the latest information. These include liver shunt, collapsing trachea, and other medical issues that she helps the public at large with via the internet. Dugmore also initiated the inaugural web site on puppy mills in this country, PuppyMills.com, exposing the horrendous issues and conditions in which dogs are being raised. The Vice President is Dr. Julie Gedro, who is a former fulltime Human Resource Management and Development practitioner in the finance, high tech and telecommunications sectors. Dr. Gedro is an Associate Professor of Business, Management and Economics with Empire State College / State University of New York. Gedro brings her leadership and human resource management and development skills to bear in the management of the organization. Secretary Mary Schmidt worked as a Computer Systems Program Analyzer for the City Schools of Rochester, New York. Treasurer Linda Connor has worked as a registered nurse for 35 years and is currently employed full time at Children s Hospital Boston in the Perioperative Program. Linda has been a loyal board member of YTNR since its inception in 1997 and was elected into the Treasurer position of YTNR in 2010 to serve a three year term. Corrine Ellison is a General Motors retiree with 15 years in Training and Education. Ellison is actively engaged in a variety of management duties for the organization including the keeping rescue database, the establishment of adoption donations, approves medical expenses, and the overall organization of rescues. Stephi Luken is a retired vehicle safety investigator, currently working as a vet tech in Montgomery County, Maryland. Ronnie Birdsong serves as Vice President for University Relations and Enrollment Services Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico. Elaine Leshnower is a retired Human Resource Director, former educator, and has experience as past treasurer and finance chair of two volunteer organizations. The challenges facing the organization are the number and variety of rescue organizations that are prevalent.it uses its website, newsletter, and listservs to maintain its active, national presence and to communicate and get the work of rescue conducted.however, the ostensible intensity and market penetration of rescue organizations is exacerbated in part by the ease with which an organization can create a web presence and compete with well established organizations like YTNR.Therefore, in a challenged economic environment like the one we currently face, there is increased competition for limited resources. 3
4 CEO Statement There are several distinctive qualities about the organization. We are well established and sustainable. We are fourteen years old, and have rescued and re-homed over 4,000 dogs since our founding in Our leadership team is an accomplished and multi-faceted group of committed and passionate activists. Our volunteer database consists of 934 volunteers nationwide although all are not active at the same time we are able to help in nearly all of the continental states. We are committed to providing education and awareness around issues such as animal cruelty and neglect, as well as the healthcare issues such as liver shunt that are endemic to the breed. We provide rescue, foster, adoption, and healthcare services with an ethic that embraces all Yorkies in need, not just those who are young, beautiful, healthy, and ostensibly desirable. that provided public assistance. However, we had to put the program on hold, due to the impact that economic conditions have had on our own financial capabilities. One of our main goals is to be able to revive the program, which helped low income families be able to spay and neuter their Yorkies, and other small breeds. Dink's Memorial Fund helps low income families who have medical issues with their personal pets that helps pay for the medical care in extenuating circumstances. Our Board voted to develop a program for senior Yorkies in need several years ago and need funds to help us proceed with that need with the growing amount of senior dogs that so easily become displaced. We have a need for funds to help some of the major repairable medical needs of the dogs that are surrendered to YTNR. These include neck and spinal injuries, major dental care, broken bones, paralyzed wheel chair candidates and on-going physical therapy which is done by one of Board members in her home with the instruction and support of a Board Certified Surgeon. It is important to note that all of our Officers and Board Members donate their time and talents in kind, pay all of their own expenses to and from Annual Board meetings and other YTNR events. In addition to rescuing and re-homing dogs, we have a serious commitment to social justice that interweaves the work that we do. Thank you for considering helping YTNR with its unique mission of providing education, rescue, foster, adoption, and healthcare to Yorkies all over the United States. We truly appreciate it. 4
5 Programs Programs Spay & Neuter Description Every rescue we take in is spayed or neutered. These costs can range from $45 to $200 depending on the location of the dog. Budget $130 Category Population Served Animal-Related, General/Other Animal-Related, General/Other Adults, General/Unspecified, General/Unspecified Liver Shunt Fund Description We accept dogs that have liver shunt and we take them to the University of TN where they repair the shunt by placing an ameroid constrictor on the portal vein. UT has the best Surgeons in the country, including Dr. Karen Tobias. These surgeries can cost anywhere from $1800 to $2000 which many owners can't afford. Yorkie rescue takes in these special needs dogs, oversees their surgery and recovery. YTNR continues to provide a foster home for these dogs until their bile acids return to normal, approximately 3-4 months after surgery and at that point they are put up for adoption and placed in their forever homes where they have lived long healthy happy lives. We have done this surgery on approximately 50 dogs all with amazing success!!!!
