2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Why We Can't Wait, Inc.'s mission is to empower and develop youth/teens in underserved communities. We also will serve families, improving parent involvement and combat growing health disparities such as, but not limited to, childhood obesity, violence, childhood diabetes, and sedentary lifestyles. Background Why We Can't Wait, Inc. was conceived after years of working with youth/teens in a traditional fashion. The 8:00 am - 4:00 pm worked for some youth; however, as we looked at the statistics and the various crimes and murders among African American boys, we knew something had to change. Why We Can't Wait, Inc. looked at the obvious, female headed households, lack of summer employment for teens, lack of exposure to men role models, missing fathers, open air drug selling in the community, poor graduation rates, violence, and we constructed a nontraditional program to reach and teach this population. All of this, coupled with one of our colleagues crying with a mother after her 17 year old son was killed; birth Why We Can't Wait, Inc.. 5:00 pm until 10:00 pm is a critical time in these communities. Why We Can't Wait, Inc. brings hope, provides opportunities, develops character, and mentors these boys on there way to becoming men. Impact Why We Can't Wait, Inc. provides a nontraditional program for boys years old that reside in urban, suburban, and rural. One of our biggest goals has been to reduce the dropout rate and teen fatherhood. Secondly, to provide job training opportunities and we accomplished this goal by partnering with the Nashville Career Advancement Center. Our accomplishments include, five of our participants successfully graduating from high school;2)all five have become gainfully employed. 3)we provided fitness and nutrition sessions that transformed the participants BMI at the conclusion of the summer. Lastly, during the past year, all of our participants were promoted to their next grade. Our goals for the 2015 year are as follows: 1) Provide drivers education for all the participants 15 years of age and above. 2) Certify participants 16 and older (swimmers) in life guarding. 3) Certify participants 15 and older through TSSAA to become a referee. 4) Reach out to more businesses to assist in providing jobs for our participants. 5) Get our bus fixed in order to expand the horizons of our participants by taking them to Selma, Alabama, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Memphis National Civil Rights Museum, and the Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio summer impact of the WWCW South program included the following: 1) We served 30 plus boys ranging in age of ) 10 of our boys received jobs and will continue working them throughout the school year. 3) 20 of our participants received certifications in CPR/First aid. 4) All the participants in the program remained drug free, and had no incidents of violent acts or criminal activity. 5) One of the original participants from the program is now a Jr. staff of our program. Needs Why We Can't Wait, Inc. is looking to replicate our program this summer in east Nashville. Targeting boys that reside in James Cayce, Levy place, 37206/37207 zip codes. This requires additional staff, supplies & equipment, and funding in the amount of $25,000. Our bus needs to be put in the shop prior to the summer beginning and receive some needed repairs. Thirdly, monies to assist with certifying the participants in drivers education, life guarding, and TSSAA. Fourth, we need businesses to provide training/employment opportunities to our participants and we will assist as job coaches. Lastly, we need volunteers who will serve as mentors, coaches, tutors, and are willing to come out two nights a week during the summer. Presently, Why We Can't Wait, Inc. needs a passenger bus. This will enable us to serve our current site in Napier /Sudekum, and would allow us to expand to another site. 2

3 Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer Why We Can't Wait, Inc. offers a variety of ways to become involved with our agency. We offer both traditional and nontraditional programs. You can become involved in the following ways: volunteer to be a mentor, tutor, or coach; donate expertise services in job training, esteem building, resume writing, and or write a check to sponsor a teen to be certified as a life guard, TSSAA (referee), or participate in drivers education. Additionally, we ask that if you are a business owner, provide an opportunity for one or more of our teen participants to shadow at your workplace. Service Categories Primary Organization Category Youth Development / Youth Development Programs Secondary Organization Category Employment / Job Training Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Davidson Why We Can't Wait, Inc. serves inner-city boys 12-18, that reside in south Nashville and east Nashville. Our goal is to procure the resources to expand city-wide. Board Chair Statement Why We Can't Wait, Inc. faces resource challenges, family transitioning challenges, and business partnership challenges. In an effort to combat these challenges, we fundraise year around. Secondly, continue serving the participant and family even if they move from the program service area. Lastly, we are meeting with businesses and open to meeting more in developing partnerships that would provide them with reliable workers. The successes of the program include participants developing a healthy attitude about school and getting an education. We have seven participants that have graduated high school and are gainfully employed. We have also reduced violent incidents in which the boys could easily be involved. CEO Statement Why We Can't Wait, Inc. is unique because it is nontraditional and it begins when all other youth serving agencies have gone home. In addition, it provides mentoring relationships that have developed into all of the staff becoming surrogate fathers. We visit the homes/ schools and empower the boys to become productive men. Our staff have lived in the housing projects so we can identify with the day to day struggles the boys go through. More importantly, we listen and give the participants an opportunity to express ideas to develop the program. 3
