District 7610 Annual Conference Staff Directory and New Members From Where I Sit District Governor Janet Brown Happy New Year Family Members, J anuary 2016 is Vocational Service Month. Vocational service is the very essence of Rotary and is deeply rooted in the core values upon which Rotary is built. As a Rotarian leader, put your ideas into action using your professional skills to service your communities and be a Gift to the World. We had a very productive first six months of Rotary Year Some highlights include: Visitation of all 57 clubs. Engaged 57 Presidents and provided information to eclub online; UN Day, November 7, 2015, was successful with 40 students and Rotarians in attendance; Recognition Proclamation from Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe for the District s inaugural Done in a Day, November 21, Outstanding participation from our clubs in support of the Rotary Day event; Severe weather forced the cancellation of RYLA, disappointing the youth who registered to participate; The District established membership goal for RY is 57 new members. New members count to date is 34; The District appointed a Peace Ambassador, Erik Hass, from the Herndon Club. Erik is making rounds to clubs sharing Peace awareness information. The planning for our District Family gathering (District Conference) is starting to take shape as the Clubs in the twelve areas plan displays and presentations showcasing their Gifts to the World, our District, and the Community. The club presidents will receive more detailed information from me shortly. (Continued on page 2) Page 1

2 January begins Mid-Year Progress reviews of club accomplishments with respect to District Goals, and Presidential and Governor citations. More information will be forthcoming. Reminder: Invoices are coming! Invoices for membership dues will be sent to clubs in mid-january, and will be based on membership data in Rotary s database as of 1. Adjustments can no longer be made once the invoice has been issued. As we enter into the new calendar year of 2016, I look forward to the success we have enjoyed thus far to continue for the remainder of the RY. In the meantime, here is a prayer I heard at the Blue Ridge Mountains Club meeting. The author is Rotarian Henry Weinschenk, Past President of the Blue Ridge Mountains Club. Lets us reflect... Lets us reflect on what makes human beings human. Lets us reflect on our ability to tell right from wrong, truth from untruth and love from simple desire. Lets us reflect on man s ascent through the ages, from superstition to rationality, from myth to science, from intolerance to tolerance, from slavery to freedom. Lets us reflect on the fact that the journey is still not complete, and never will be. That there are truths not yet completely understood, that there are ethics not yet fully evolved, that we still need to not only explore the ideas of the ancient philosophers and prophets; but, that we still need to keep building from there, that there is still a long road ahead of us. Lets us give thanks for our ability to live life as human beings, capable of thought, of love and of new ideas, while building on what previous generations endowed us with. Until next time, DG JB Page 2

The Rotary Club of McLean coordinated with school librarian and media specialist Lisa Russell in the selection of books. This year the books read and presented to the students were: Kindergarten-- The Hat by Jan Brett and two books by Gilda & Melvin Berger, Snowflakes Are Falling, and Cold Weather; First Grade The Mitten by Jan Brett, and two books by Gilda & Melvin Berger, Animals in Winter, and Polar Bears; Second Grade A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams, and Henry and Mudge, by Cynthia Rylant. Timber Lane Elementary School is a Title I school under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of The purpose of this legislation is to help the neediest schools and students reach the same challenging standards expected of all children. This reading program and the cooperation between Timber Lane and the Rotary Club of McLean helps to address the goals of the Title I program by seeking to improve student language arts strategies and skills, by promoting critical thinking and problem solving skills, and by encouraging family engagement in the education of children. McLean Rotarian John Rosenbaum reads to students at Timber Lane Elementary School.
