All new $500 cash donations Annual Fund SHARE will qualify if fully credited in April FLASH!!! District 7610 announced today that, through the generosity of some donors within the district, it will match new personal donations of at least $500 cash to the Annual Fund-SHARE with a like number of recognition points, if the donation is totally credited to The Rotary Foundation during the month of April This means that a gift of only $500 will result in the donor s PHF recognition level being increased as if he/she had given $1,000. This is wonderful news! Such matching points do not always occur during any particular Rotary year, and is a great opportunity for donors to get more recognition bang for their buck during the limited time this district match is in effect. Although donors give to The Rotary Foundation primarily to do good in the world, it s always nice when the accompanying recognition is doubled. There are some specific conditions that the points donors have laid down for this match, and we must comply with these conditions. Please read the following listing of these conditions carefully to avoid any misunderstanding. To be matched, the donation must: Be a NEW contribution (as opposed to a previously-made Paul Harris Society pledge). Be at least $500. Be in cash (as opposed to property). Be designated to the Annual Fund-SHARE. Have at least $500 of the donation amount credited to TRF fully during April. (Although recurring credit card donations through Rotary-DIRECT are fine, the first installment must be at least $500 in April in order to meet this condition.) Please let your Club Foundation Chair and/or your Area Foundation Advisor know if you ve earned this points match, providing them the particulars, and they will pass the information along to DRFC Juanita Cawley to ensure that you get your matching points. 10 Introducing AFA Ralph Menzel, Rotary Club of West Springfield Meet one of the newest and most active members of the District Rotary Family Ralph Menzel transferred his membership to the Rotary Club of West Springfield only ten months ago! He became a part of District 7610 in 2015 when he and his wife, Laurie, moved to Virginia from Stuttgart, Germany (having lived there for 13 years). In Germany, he belonged to Rotary District Ralph s initial foray into Rotary was as a charter member of the 1000th German Rotary Club when the Stuttgart International club (English speaking) was founded in March He later transferred his membership to the Stuttgart Solitude club (German speaking) to increase his foreign language skills and to participate in more Rotary service club activities in the greater Stuttgart community. Ralph is the current Foundation Chair for his club, and also, the Area 8 Foundation Advisor (covering Springfield, Burke, Annandale, Centreville/Chantilly and West Springfield). For the upcoming Rotary year, AFA Ralph Menzel he is being nominated to serve as the District 7610 Paul Harris Society Chair and will serve as the Club s President Nominee ( ). Ralph is a Paul Harris Fellow and recent inductee into the Paul Harris Society. As a strong advocate for all things Rotary (especially Foundation!), he is a graduate of the Rotary Leadership Institute. He fervently believes in and advocates for the 4 Way Test and will be attending the upcoming District Conference. Ralph retired from the United States Air Force, with the rank of Colonel, after having served for 30 years in 14 different locations around the world. He spent 10 years Civil Service time and is currently employed by General Dynamics at Ft. Belvoir. He has earned an MA in Management/Human Relations and Organizational Behavior from the University of Phoenix and a BA in Education/History/ Geography from the University of Colorado. Laurie is a graduate of the University of Arizona (BA - General Studies), and she has an MA from the University of Denver (Non-Profit Management). She is currently employed with the Girl Scout Council Nation s Capital. Both love to travel which has taken them to 60+ countries around the world. Ralph and Laurie have been married for 29 years. They have a daughter living close by who is a recent graduate of George Washington University with an MA degree in Forensic Psychology. Their latest adventure is learning to appreciate the rich cultural, historical and diverse environment of the northern Virginia area (except the traffic and humidity!). 11 MicheLo Project Serving Humanity in Swaziland The Rotary Clubs of Bailey s Crossroads and McLean team to help children By Michelle (Meesh) Peters, Bailely s Crossroads Rotary Rotarians Meesh Peters (Rotary Club of Bailey s Crossroads) and Dr. Lois Wilson (Rotary Club of McLean) will be partnering this year with the Manzini Rotary Club in Swaziland and the MicheLo Program to expand the provision of Special Education and Dental Health services to disabled and orphaned children in Swaziland. This marks the District's second Vocational Training Team (VTT) Global Grant which will for the first time, include teams from the U.S. and Swaziland. Teachers from Swaziland will have the rare opportunity to travel to the U.S. for inservice training in Fairfax County Public Schools. In partnership with the host country of Swaziland, this May, Ms. Peters will be taking a 4-month extended leave of absence from Fairfax County Public Schools to assist the Swazi Ministry of Education. She was invited by the Kingdom of Swaziland to continue the areas of service that the MicheLo Program initiated in While there, Ms. Peters will focus on providing special education and cognitive testing training, as well as supporting schools throughout the kingdom in developing equitable education for girls and learners with disabilities. She will also be working to help build a borehole (well) at the school to provide water for the school's sustainable garden. Dr. Wilson, with our U.S. MicheLo team of teachers, will arrive in July to expand our dental health and special education services. While there, they will provide emergency and preventative dental care, and educational supports in music, adaptive sports, and literacy. The goals of MicheLo have always been to support and include the students and community surrounding St. Joseph s School for the Disabled with equitable education and proper oral health services. Over the past 7 years considerable growth can be seen in the: * Acknowledgement of the Special Education programming as a"model program" by the Ministry of Education, * Development of inclusive community programs to allow all children in the area to participate in music and sports both during and after school hours, * Building of two school libraries (one is a Braille library), * Changing of a community s understanding of disabilities and decrease in the negative stigma (i.e. fear) associated with disabilities, * Improvement of the overall health of the members of the St. Joseph's community, * Decrease of the need for emergency dental health procedures now required for the children of the St. Joseph's community, * Qualification and participation of a student on the International Special Olympics Swazi Team, and * Increase of literacy levels of students and staff at the school by opening the libraries.. For more information, find Rotarians Meesh Peters and Dr. Lois Wilson at the Annual District Conference in Chesapeake, MD! There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children. - Nelson Mandela In Motion: The Rotary Foundation Newsletter of District 7610 March 2016 Page 11
