Our Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator, Kay Davis, reminds us that we re in the final countdown to having a strong finish to , our Rotary Foundation s Centennial year! Your club can still reach or surpass its Rotary Foundation goals, increasing the good that Rotary does in the world. 1. Check the chart on the next-to-last page of this newsletter and see where your club stands in Annual Fund-SHARE (AFgiving), PolioPlus giving and achieving banners, 100% Foundation Giving Banner and Every Rotarian, Every Year Club Banner. For clubs that achieve an average of $100 in per capita giving and 100 percent participation, with every duespaying member contributing at least $25 to any or all of the following during the Rotary year: Annual Fund, PolioPlus Fund, approved global grants, or Endowment Fund recognition is given as a 100% Foundation Giving Club. For clubs that achieve a minimum Annual Fund contribution of $100 per capita during the Rotary year, and every dues-paying member personally contributes at least $25 to the Annual Fund during the year, recognition is given as an Every Rotarian, Every Year Club. 2. Determine how many more dollars your club needs to give to the Annual Fund- SHARE to meet and/or exceed your giving goal. 3. See if your club can reach the Centennial year citation goal of $2,650 to PolioPlus. Our district goal is that every club makes a contribution to PolioPlus this Rotary Year. 4. For individual Rotarians, determine if you have contributed in the amount based on your personal goals. When you give $100 or more per year to the Annual Fund you become a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member. When you give $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus, or an approved Foundation grant, you become a Paul Harris Fellow. To recognize someone else as a Paul Harris Fellow, you can give that amount in their name. 5. Make your contributions to The Rotary Foundation right away, based on your decisions above. Remember to always use the correct forms when making a contribution and complete them accurately. Keep copies of your contribution forms and any correspondence. Purchase postage from a post office counter clerk and obtain a receipt issued with destination and date mailed. Be sure to mail your contributions to: The Rotary Foundation, Collections Center Drive, Chicago, IL 60693, DO NOT MAIL YOUR CHECKS TO THE DISTRICT OFFICE. 3 Welcome District 7610 s Third Global Grant Scholar By Samantha Rick, Global Scholar My year at Sussex University has been instrumental in allowing me to define concretely the aims I am pursuing in my work. While each course has covered a particular topic or area in depth, broad surveys pointing out trends in problems or issues have allowed me to follow specific lines of exploration in the field of Maternal and Child Health. Each course has provided cases and theorists from a wide variety of geographical, social, and economic contexts. My professors have encouraged me to look at each case through the lens of my own interests, and they have shown me how to do so. Now that I am nearing completion of my degree, where beforehand I could really only say that I was interested in basically everything dealing with social interactions, I can confidently say that my academic interests lie in the intersections of feminism and the state. Specifically, I am focusing on state development policies and their impact on the status of women and feminized groups. This entails an evaluation of gender-blind economic development policies and symbolic representation. Samantha Rick District Scholar I entered the degree program with the desire to figure out ways to do ethical development work. I had not sought ways to combine my defining personal interests with my professional work. In my work at Sussex, I have explored that combination by interjecting my personal background into my inquiries. In one of my fall term papers, I explored the rural religious identity and how that identity exported Evangelical traditions to developing countries in the Global South. I then linked my professional experience to academic criticism of development organizations in another term paper showing how methods, such as political economy analysis and social autopsy, are responding to postmodern criticisms of the development industry. I used knowledge of feminism to evaluate economic development programs and policies. Currently, both my term paper and dissertation are evaluating the interconnectedness of economic and gender justice in the 2016 Democratic primary in the U.S. I am also exploring symbolic representation effects of quota policies with a case study of Rwanda. My work this year has stimulated my interest in more ethical development by showing me ways that programming can be ethical for everyone and by identifying the pitfalls arising from policies that are blind to the interests of specific groups. These two issues inextricably link economic development with social development. My experience with Rotary greatly enhanced my time in the UK. Spending time with my sponsoring club introduced me to different kinds of people and broadened my perspective on the British identity. In particular, when I first came to England, the club was extremely supportive and sought to answer all questions I had about living in England. They provided a strong lifeline for me while I was navigating my integration into a new society and getting my bearings. The club members have been very interested in my work, and I can tell that they are committed to the same aims and goals. With my degree, I plan to return to the U.S. and to secure a position that concentrates on policy development at the federal government level. While the resources devoted to international development programming have shifted with the new administration, it remains ever critical to hone and perfect programming in order to serve as many people with as high a quality of work as possible. I want to work to ensure that policy effectively and efficiently tackles the problems it is intended to address and that international development programming serves the interests of those in need. Thanks to my year at Sussex made possible by the Rotary Global Grant, I feel well-prepared to do tackle this issue. In Motion: The Rotary Foundation Newsletter of District 7610 June 2017 Page 3

11 District 7610 Foundation Newsletter Welcomes New Editor, Publisher Farewell and thanks to Suzanne McDougall Welcome to Jim Holcolmb, Editor and James Hicks, Publisher of the Foundation Newsletter It has been both an honor and a pleasure to serve as editor of the District 7610 Foundation Newsletter for the past three years. I am indebted to ARRFC and immediate past Foundation Chair, Chuck Davidson, and former Rotarian, Scott Mills, for their invaluable assistance in teaching me the ins and outs of the process. I also owe Chuck a big thank you for his constant support and mentoring throughout the years. He continues to be an important contributor to this newsletter in the form of articles and the analysis of the Foundation Giving Reports that anchor this document. A very special thank you to DRFC Juanita Cawley for her support and encouragement. It has been a pleasure to work with Juanita Cawley. She is a valuable contributor to the content and process and a great cheerleader for this initiative. Her passion for the Foundation is infectious and inspirational. Additionally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many contributors to the Newsletter. Articles from the Area Foundation Advisors, Scholars, and Chairs of the various committees that make up the Foundation team have informed and entertained the District members. Special recognition of the support of Sandy Duckworth through the years and, most recently, for current PHS Chair Ralph Menzel. Their reports on and photographs of the activities and growing membership of the Paul Harris Society have served to inform and motivate District 7610 Rotarians. While I am leaving this position, I know the newsletter will be in very good hands with the team of Jim Holcomb and James Hicks led by Juanita Cawley. As a member of DG Ronnie Chantker s administration, I plan to continue to support the District and the District Foundation team. I have served as Area 10 Assistant Governor for RY and plan to continue for RY Beginning in July, Jim Holcombe will again serve as the District PI Chair working with incoming DG Ronnie Chantker (through the District Membership Chair). He will also be the In Motion editor--reporting to PDG and Foundation Chair, Juanita Cawley. Jim s apprenticeship to become the editor of In Motion was to co-write the March issue together with Rotarian James Hicks (who will be the publisher handling production and layout). Moreover, Jim wants to thank each of this year s contributors and especially PDG Chuck Davidson and Ralph Menzel. A VERY, VERY special thanks to Suzanne McDougall who literally spent days bringing the new editorial team up to speed. In addition, Jim Holcombe wanted to express very special thank you to DG Janet Brown, DGE Ronnie Chantker, and PDG Juanita Cawley for selecting him. Jim holds a B.A. in International studies and foreign language and two master s degrees (International Management/Marketing and Education). In 1981, he won a CLIO award for advertising excellence (the Oscar for advertising). With these combined experiences and with PDG Juanita Cawley at the helm as Managing editor, In Motion is clearly in good hands.
