3 Overcoming Anxiety: Service Above Self in Nigeria Polio Chair describes how her service in Nigeria helped calm apprehensions. BY COLLEEN BONADONNA, DISTRICT POLIO CHAIR While preparing for my trip last month to Nigeria to take part in the polio immunization drive, I will admit that I was apprehensive. Earlier in the year, ten polio vaccinators were killed just miles from where we would be working. Could my going to an area, where we were not welcome, be of any benefit? It turns out it most certainly was. Led by PDG Ann Lee Hussey, a polio survivor, the team of ten Rotarians traveled to Nigeria to take part in Immunization Plus Days (IPD) over a ten-day period. Participating in past NIDs in India, I knew how to give the vaccine and the normal protocol of the program. Meeting with the Polio Emergency Operations Center throughout the drive, we observed the cold storage chain of the vaccine and how the vaccine was distributed to the vaccinators. Early each morning we would break into teams of two, paired with a local Rotaractor or Rotarian and go to our designated spot. To one village, we walked several miles on a footpath. Most often we were met with appreciation, and at some villages we were told that we were not welcomed. When this occurred, we simply told them, We paid our own way and left the comforts of home and family to tell them that people around the world appreciate that they are vaccinating their children and protecting all the children from polio. Thank you. Upon saying this we were graciously welcomed. Along with polio vaccinations, we took part in providing materials for a birthing clinic, school, painted toilet buildings and commissioning of matching grants for a bore hole, bridge and hospital equipment. The highlight was giving fifty polio survivors handpedal wheelchairs, allowing mobility they had not enjoyed for many years. If this sounds like something about which you would like to learn more or in which you would like to take part, contact Colleen Bonadonna at: cblens@cox.net. Preparations are underway to assemble a team to travel to India in mid February. For more detailed information, please see the India NID flyer on page 4 of this newsletter. District Polio Chair Colleen Bonadonna (top, second from left) traveled to Nigeria last month as part of a ten-rotarian National Immunization Day team, which was led by Ann Lee Hussey, PDG of Rotary District 7780 (fourth from left). Nigeria is one of only three countries where polio remains endemic. In Motion: The Rotary Foundation Newsletter of District 7610 December 2013 Page 3

5 New England Journal of Medicine Article Addresses Polio Risk Worldwide 2011 Polio Outbreak in China proves that no country is free from risk without global eradication. In the November 21, 2013 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, Hui-Ming Luo, M.D., documents the risk that exists for the continuing spread of polio worldwide, even among countries that are free of polio, absent the global eradication of the disease. Dr. Loa extrapolated data obtained during the 2011 outbreak of wild poliovirus type 1 in Xinjiang, China, which DNA testing confirmed was imported from Pakistan. As a result of the outbreak in China between July 3 and October 9, 2011, five rounds of vaccination with live, attenuated oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) were conducted among children and adults, totaling 43 million doses of vaccine. Trivalent OPV were used in three rounds, and monovalent OPV type 1 was used in the two remaining of the five rounds of the campaign. Dr. Loa concluded that the 2011 outbreak in China showed that poliomyelitis-free countries remain at risk for outbreaks while the poliovirus circulates anywhere in the world. Global eradication of poliomyelitis will benefit all countries, even those that are currently free of poliomyelitis. The first in a series of Tappahannock Rotary Club Polio Campaign ads appeared in the Rappahannock Times this month. Way to go, Tappahannock! 8 Larry Stuart: Polio Ambassador for December A compelling story, many years later, gives insight to treatments faced by a child with polio. BY LARRY STUART, LEESBURG-DAYBREAK A year before the first public test of the Salk vaccine, I contracted polio. I was seven years old. I was paralyzed from the neck down. I could breathe and eat, but could not move my limbs. Little was known about polio, so I was quarantined at home. Only my parents had contact with me. My friends would stand on our front porch and talk to me through an open window as I lay on the sofa in our living room. What I missed most was playing ball and reading. I even got tired of television. My doctor recommended hot baths. And he meant hot! Twice a day Mom would wrap me in towels and put me in scalding water. She would cry as I screamed for her not to do it and it hurt her arms. We are this close to ending polio! Rotarian Larry Stuart Rotary Club of Leesburg-Daybreak But, it was for my good, so she did it. Then she would guard me. If I slipped below the water I would drown. Twenty minutes later, or what felt like an eternity, Dad would come home from work and carry me to my room. Wrapped in water soaked towels I was too heavy for Mom. They would wrap me in plastic sheets. That was to keep me from cooling off too quickly. I would lay there looking at the ceiling until Mom would remove the cooled towels, dry me and carry me back to the living room. This went on for over three months. One day my foot moved a little. In less than a week the paralysis was gone. I had to re-learn how to walk and other functions but that did not take long. My doctor speculated that a chicken pox vaccination a week before the onset of the polio may have lessened its impact. But, no connection between the two has been proven. I have no residual effects from the polio except I cannot stand hot showers. Stafford Rotarians George and Julie Franklin Become Major Donors Stafford Rotarians George and Lt. Gov. 10 Woody Bentley: AFA of the Month for December Woody serves Rotary Clubs in northwestern Fairfax County. BY PATRICIA VELKOFF, VIENNA ROTARIAN Which Area Foundation Advisor is an eleventh generation descendant of Pocahontas and John Rolfe; served in the Army in Germany and France; served as Commander of the Light Horse Harry Lee Camp, Heroes of 76; is a Master Mason; and is active in a number of heritage organizations including the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sons of the Revolution, the Jamestowne Society, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Boling Family Association? My fellow members of the Rotary Club of Vienna are smiling right about now, No, not this Woody Bentley, but having gotten regular updates about Rotarian Woody Bentley s trips to reunions it s a classic! and heritage group meetings during Happy Talk. What his fellow Rotarians may not know is that as a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force, Woody worked in investigations of fraud, criminal intelligence, and undercover operations. After retiring from the Air Force in 1984, he went on to establish investigative and security programs both in the Department of Defense and in the private sector. Community service, though, has been Woody s consistent passion. He joined the Rotary Club of Vienna in 1990, serving in a range of capacities over the years for the Club and for District He was instrumental in expanding the Viva Vienna Town Festival to three days and in increasing its net profit many fold between 2001 and With a passionate dedication to Rotary s humanitarian, educational, and polio eradication programs, Woody has raised and directed over $175,000 to The Rotary Foundation. To assist Clubs further in their Foundation AFA Woody Bentley, the true classic! development, he became an Area Foundation Advisor in 2011 for the northwestern Fairfax County and Loudoun County Rotary Clubs of Dulles International Airport, Herndon, Reston, and Vienna Woody puts his heart into many volunteer activities, always coming up with ways to strengthen and extend their good work. While much of his community service is devoted to Rotary activities, he also is actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America, Fairfax Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. He assists with Samaritan Ministries of Greater Washington, serving the homeless and unemployed; and he volunteers with the Chaplain s Program of the Fairfax Adult Detention Center and with the Fairfax County Beacon Program, a re-entry program for the formerly incarcerated. With Claire, his wife of fifty-one years, Woody is proud and very involved with the couple s three children and five grandchildren. Does he sound like a busy fellow? Yes, but he is never too busy to take time for a chat, listen to your passions, and maybe come up with some ideas on how you can do just a little more to further the good work of Rotary International. 16 Giving Peace on Earth PDG Larry Labadie invites all Rotarians to leave a legacy of peace. PDG LARRY LABADIE, RPC MGI COMMITTEE MEMBER ZONES 33 AND 34 We find ourselves again in the Christmas and holiday season. I think we all subscribe to the thought that it is better to give than to receive. It is in the spirit of giving that I share with you this story. In 2007 Maureen and I were in the process of trying to decide which unneeded toy we should purchase. For some strange reason we both arrived at the same conclusion: We had enough toys, enough possessions, and we had been blessed economically far above where we thought we would be. What are we doing? Surely there is a better use for excess income than following this path yet again. Somehow we reached a life-changing decision that answered the question, When is enough enough? We made a decision that the best use of that money would be to leave a legacy to the world. Although we would continue to support Annual Fund SHARE as a Paul Harris Society member, we would support the Peace Scholar program of The Rotary Foundation. Over the years, we have met and talked to many Rotary Peace Fellows, and we are overwhelmed by the dedication and commitment to spend their lives striving for peace in this world. We only have to see the recent correlation between the strife in Syria and the appearance after 19 years of polio in that country to understand that peace and conflict resolution should be high on all our lists of priorities in our pursuit of Service Above Self. After we made this decision, we met to inform our son and daughter that they would not be the sole recipients of our life s labor. If you ever want to feel proud of your children, share this message on them and, hopefully, you will have the same results that Maureen and I experienced. They both looked us in the eye and told us that it was marvelous and we were doing the right thing not only for them but for humanity. Thinking of that moment still brings tears to my eyes. Please consider leaving your own personal legacy in your name and in the name of your family. This can be accomplished in many ways, either cash or securities now or through your estate planning. I urge you to consider this thoroughly and I hope that you will experience the peace and contentment that a decision like this will bring you. It would be the best holiday gift that you could ever give yourself and the world: Peace on earth and goodwill towards all people. Has Your Club Entered Its TRF Goals for on Rotary Club Central?
