1 FEBRUARY 2002 MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR Rotary Foundation Month... and the Benefits to Our Local Youth! OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT ANDY TURNER District Governor, / DI THOMPSON Newsletter Editor 540/ KELI HAROLD District Executive Secretary P.O. Box 916 Mineral, VA / Fax 540/ Office Hours: M-F, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. In my November newsletter, I spoke of how the Rotary Foundation was not just another charity, and how it benefits members of your community. Well, thanks to the generous donations of Rotarians, non-rotarians, and clubs in our district during the Rotary year, we are able to provide some of our bright, young students and talented young professionals opportunities of a lifetime during this year. Ambassadorial Scholarships Following an intensive interview process, we selected three very special college graduates into the ranks as Ambassadorial scholars. Full year academic scholarships were awarded to Hunter Ferguson (proposed by the Crystal City/ Pentagon RC), and Jyoti Schlesinger, (proposed by the Vienna RC). Hunter will be studying civil liberties and constitutional studies at University of Cape Town, South Africa, and Joyti will attend University of London to study reproductive and sexual health. Bridget Kuckowski, a nurse in the UVA Health System (proposed by the Albemarle County RC), received a six-month Cultural scholarship to live in Grenada, Spain to become proficient in Spanish in order to be a more versatile, skilled and conscientious health care provider for this underserved population. Group Study Exchange Thanks to a wonderful second effort by district Rotarians to get the word out on this fantastic program, we selected five outstanding individuals who will have a life-changing experience as they spend four weeks in Finland, living with Rotarians, savoring their culture and food, making lifelong friends, and learning how their vocation is practiced in that part of the world. Led by Jerry Evans of the Rappahannock-Fredericksburg RC, the team members and their sponsoring clubs include Amy Bolton (Annandale), multimedia producer; Lee Elliott (Bailey s Crossroads), technology consultant; Victoria Moore (Falls Church), Management Consultant; Tia Pappamihiel (West Springfield), electrologist; and Scott Scholz (Fairfax), Volunteer Manager. After about three months of training and preparation, they will depart for Finland on the same flight as the returning Finnish GSE team on May 11 th. Both teams will be presenting a program on Saturday afternoon of the district conference. All of these wonderful, young people have expressed their thanks to all district Rotarians who support the Rotary Foundation to keep these wonderful educational programs alive. We are proud of all of them and wish them a safe and memorable journey. After each of them return from their program, they are obligated to make presentations to our clubs. Contact the respective District Chairs for these programs to arrange the visit. Andy District 7610 website: R.I. Website:
2 Herndon Rotary Institutes Drip Program This year we decided to approach our recruiting and retention efforts in a more systematic and businesslike fashion than we had in the past. Over the years, with our stable membership, we had come to rely on the casual efforts of members to bring possible recruits. As we faced normal attrition due to transfers, changes in life situations and, even, death of our members, we realized the need to involve all members in the quest for new members to round out our rolls and bring new energy and focus to our activities. We started by designing and producing a new membership brochure with a contemporary look. This brochure, headlined with Make A Difference! includes information about Rotary International as well as specific information about the Rotary Club of Herndon and its activities. Another member developed a document that explains the way the Club meetings are conducted, the specific projects undertaken by the Club and the criteria by which members are selected. Both pieces stress the Ser- vice Above Self and are designed to appeal to potential members who are looking for a way to give back to their local and world communities. The printed materials are augmented by regular submission of press releases to highlight the ongoing work of the Club and its members. At the heart of the recruiting and retaining program is a Drip program. Members are asked to submit the names and contact information of ten possible recruits. These possible new members are then sent a copy of the Make A Difference! brochure and a short note asking them to consider Rotary membership. They are invited to take a look at the website (under revision by a task force) and to contact a member of the board for more information. Inquiries are followed up with the second printed piece (most often sent via ) and invited to join us for a regular meeting. The Drip program calls for a regular contact with those recommended for membership minimally each quarter. They are also sent a copy of our Newsletter as it is developed. Retention is reinforced with regular member s, a Newsletter with pictures of speakers and members and an ongoing education program conducted during the course of regular meetings. The fireside chat, a separate educational event where each service area is discussed and reviewed as a way of educating new and old members, is another vehicle for member retention that has been effectively used in the last few years. By far, the most effective way to bring more members, who have a desire to serve, is to keep the name and faces of the Club in front of the community. Fortunately, our Club members, as a whole, take prominent positions within the business community and their work is reported in the local papers. The activities of our Club members and the continued reminder to look for possible new members form the heart of our Club s growth. The Drip program assists with follow up and provides a database that can be massaged, developed and continued from one year to the next. C Welcome, New Members! ongratulations to the following new Rotarians who have joined our ranks in recent months. When you attend your meetings or make up at a club, be sure to extend a special greeting to new club members. 3 Millennium Club Gets Busy! Our District s New Generations Club, Rotary s first experimental club trying an alternative meeting schedule, is off to a great start with community service activities and social activities as members get to know each other and learn about Rotary. Shown here at the Charter Night in June 2001 are Treasurer Laura Willets, President Bob de Lorenzi, Beth Watson, Rhonda Layton, ADG Pat Williams, PDG Pat Mullins and Sergeant at Arms Gina Jordan. The Millennium Club has many projects to its credit already, some of which will be highlighted during one of the plenary sessions at the District Conference in Virginia Beach. Make plans now to attend the District Conference and learn more about many of our district s active clubs and what they are doing in Rotary this year. Happy Anniversary! Congratulations to the following clubs who will celebrate a very special anniversary within the next 90 days: ROTARY CLUB OF CULPEPER Chartered February 8, YEARS ROTARY CLUB OF ORANGE Chartered March 3, YEARS Resolutions for Today s Rotarians by Bob Metzger EDITOR S NOTE: Bob Metzger was DG Andy Turner s mentor when Bob was District Secretary and Andy was Club Secretary Elect. 1. I will do my best to live, work and play by the tenets of the Object of Rotary: To encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. 2. Unless it is physically impossible for me to do so, I will undertake to accomplish expeditiously every task which I am asked to do by my Rotary Club. I will not be a RINO... Rotarian in Name Only. 3. At each meeting I will try to sit with at least one member with whom I did not sit at a prior meeting. 4. I will do my best to engender a warm and friendly atmosphere for guest and visiting Rotarians by meeting and greeting them in the same manner, which I would hope to be received by a club I am visiting. I will try to never allow guests to occupy a table where a member is not seated. 5. I will introduce and sponsor at least one new member in the Bailey s Crossroads Rotary Club by 30 June I will be a positive influence in this club. Where I believe that improvement is needed, I will speak up and then be willing to lend my personal endeavor to carry out whatever action the Director s may specify. 7. I will do my best to attend or makeup every meeting. 8. I will provide one program for the Program Chairman this year. After discussion with the Chairman I will totally arrange for the program. 9. I will ocncentrate on that aspect of the Avenue of Service to which I am assigned and work at making a significant contribution there. In other words, when I am given a job, I will do it to the best of my ability. 10. I will earnestly try to attend the District 7610 District Conference (on April at Virginia Beach) I will provide support as I can to the Rotary Foundation and, if not now, I will become a Sustaining Member or a Paul Harris Fellow. 12. In all the things I think, say or do, I will ask myself: Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Deadline for Eagle Notes Submissions The 15th of the month preceeding the next issue (i.e., April 15 for the May issue and so forth).
