2 Chair of TRF Trustees & PRIP D.K. Lee Visits District 7610 PRIP D.K. encourages Rotarians to keep their promise and complete the job of polio eradication. Past RI President D.K. Lee, who currently serves as Chair of the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation, visited the Virginia Rotarians here in Rotary District 7610 the week of March 10. PRIP D.K. spoke at the Rotary Club of Alexandria to remind Rotarians of the importance of keeping our promise made to the mothers of the world that Rotary will not rest until polio is eradicated from the face of the earth. Reminding Rotarians of his presidential theme, Lee mentioned that through polio eradication we can Make Dreams Real for parents and children around the world. Later in the week, D.K. attended a fellowship event where District 7610 Rotarians had the opportunity to discuss with him the goals and programs of The Rotary Foundation and the humanitarian initiatives undertaken by Rotarians around the world. During his presentation on March 11 at the Rotary Club of Alexandria, PRIP D.K. reminded us of the fact that polio continues to paralyze children. While polio is a distant memory in most of the world, the disease still exists in three countries (Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan), and polio mainly affects children under 5. One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis, usually in the legs. Among those paralyzed, 5 percent to 10 percent die when their breathing muscles become immobilized. The global effort to eradicate polio is the largest internationally-coordinated public health effort in global history. It is spearheaded by national governments, Rotary International, World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF, and is supported by key partners including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Twenty million volunteers have immunized 3 billion children in 20 years. In 1988, when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was formed, polio paralysed more than people a year. Since that time, polio case numbers have decreased by more than 99% (with only 406 polio cases reported in 2013). Eighty percent of the world s population now live in certified polio-free regions. The world can be freed of the threat of polio with Rotary's continued commitment to eradicate the disease. PRIP & Foundation Trustee Chair D.K. 3 On the Road... Again! District Polio Chair Colleen Bonadonna returns to India, determined to keep polio eradicated there. District 7610 PolioPlus Chair Colleen Bonadonna returned last month to India filled with more enthusiasm and determination to keep polio eradicated in India and to see polio eradicated globally, once and for all. Colleen was part of a team led by PDG Nancy Barbee, which was made up of four Rotarians, one spouse and a District 7610 Interact student. For the past several years, PDG Nancy has led Rotarians on a trip to participate in a polio National Immunization Day. Starting in Delhi, this year s team met with representatives from the World Health Organization at the PolioPlus office, reviewing the progress made in India and steps being used to prevent the polio virus from coming back into India. For the first time, this team met with Dr. Mathew Varghese at St. Stephens Hospital which hosts the last polio ward in India. The team met with patients being treated for their polio deformities, most of whom contracted polio under the age of five, and are now undergoing corrective surgeries at the age of 15 through 21. In Kolkatta, a highlight for the team was meeting young cardiovascular patients who are now able to live a normal life thanks to surgeries covered through Matching and Global Grants sponsored by The Rotary Foundation. Team member John Lewandowski was so taken on an earlier trip that he went back home and orchestrated a Global Grant for $50,000 ensuring 3,000 girls would have toilets and stay in school. We met some of the students and saw the small-footprint toilets that turn waste into water. Six hours north, the Rotary Club of Dhanbad looks forward each year, to hosting the team and continuing project partnerships. The Jeevan Jolee School for the mentally and physically challenged is close to many of the team members, and the team came with many supplies in support of the children. While there was not an official National Immunization Day during the visit, the Dhanbad club arranged for team members to administer the polio vaccine to several children who were scheduled to be immunized. While the team was still in Dhanbad, the festival of Holi was observed throughout India, celebrating the triumph of good over evil and marked with colorful dyes being applied to festival participants. The team was drenched in colors, something that none of the members will soon forget. The last stop on this year s trip was to the city of Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. It was here on the first trip on 2010, that Colleen met a young man, Jopal, afflicted with Polio begging on the streets. The next year he was again in the same location. Now, three years later, she vowed to make a difference for this young man. Colleen made arrangements with physicians in Delhi, who agreed to treat this Jopal to corrective limb surgeries and calipers (braces). On going to his location, Colleen learned that Jopal had gone back to his home in Lucknow. Another young man whom Colleen had met with Jopal on her second trip to India was still in Agra. Working with the travel guide and Rotarian Dr. Nishel Pandey, Jopal s friend (pictured at right) will travel to Delhi and have the surgery followed by vocational training. Dr. Pandey is also working to find Jopal in Lucknow and provide him with the same life-changing opportunity. This was only a small glimpse of what the team did while in India. To learn more or to find out about participating in next year s trip, contact District PolioPlus Chair Colleen Bonadonna. 5 Getting Bullish on The Rotary Foundation Donating appreciated securities is a win-win for Rotarians and The Rotary Foundation. Savvy Rotarians are always looking for ways to make a greater difference by making their charitable dollars go farther. Donating appreciated securities directly to The Rotary Foundation rather than selling the assets and then donating the cash proceeds is one of the best and easiest ways for Rotarians to give more. By taking advantage of the applicable tax incentives, qualifying Rotarians can significantly increase the amount of funds available to them for charitable giving. A charitable contribution of long-term appreciated securities (i.e., stocks, bonds and/or mutual funds that have realized significant appreciation over time) is one of the most tax-efficient ways to give. Any appreciated securities with unrealized long-term gains (meaning they were purchased over a year ago, and have a current value greater than their original cost) may be donated to The Rotary Foundation and a tax deduction taken for the full fair market value of the securities, up to 30% of the donor's adjusted gross income. Since the securities are donated rather than sold, capital gains taxes from selling the securities no longer apply. The more appreciation the securities have, the greater the tax savings will be to the Rotarian donor! Donors may transmit gifts of appreciated securities through their broker or by mail with a completed notice of transmittal form. Transmitting stocks through a broker Brokers may transfer securities directly to The Rotary Foundation's brokerage account using the account information below. A donor may also transfer stock by completing a stock power form (available from any broker) and mailing it to MSTC. The signature(s) on the stock power must match the title on the stock certificate and be signed by all named parties. 6 Help Us Reach the Goal! District 7610 Paul Harris Society Members Paul Harris Society Reaches 206, Aims for 250 Members by June 30, 2014 Each Rotary Club challenged to induct one additional PHS member. BY SCOTT MILLS, DGN & PHS CHAIR McLean Rotarians Eva Sereghy and Dana Sippel, Dulles Rotarian Helen Oh, as well as Warrenton Rotarian M. Cole Johnson became the newest members of the Paul Harris Society in March. The Paul Harris Society recognizes donors who pledge to give $1,000 to the Annual Fund SHARE and other qualified TRF funds each year they are financially able. The generosity of PHS members helps to fuel our Service Above Self when PHS members commit their annual PHS contributions to Annual Fund SHARE, ensuring that our clubs will have access to District Designated funds to finance Global Grants, District Grants, and scholarships. That is why each club has been challenged with the goal of inducting one new PHS member to help District 7610 meet its goal of reaching 250 PHS members before June 30, Will you make that commitment today by returning a completed membership form (see page 14 of this newsletter), which will help District 7610 meet its goal of reaching 250 members by June 30, 2014? District 7610 can exceed its goal of 250 PHS members by June 30, 2014 if each of our 54 Rotary clubs has a net growth of one new PHS member between December 1, 2013 and June 30, Dulles International Airport, Fairfax, Gainesville-Haymarket, Herndon, Lake Ridge, McLean, Rappahannock-Fredericksburg, Vienna, Warrenton, and West Springfield already have recruited at least one new PHS. Will your club? Become a member of The Paul Harris Society and help expand Rotary s capacity to serve our community and the world. A PHS brochure is available on the PHS webpage of the District 7610 website. Please complete a membership form (see page 14 of this newsletter) and send it directly to The Rotary Foundation, Collections Center Drive, Chicago, IL 60693, and send a copy to DGN & PHS Coordinator Scott Mills. 7 Southeast Asia Certified Polio Free! Share the good news about the successful effort to end polio in southeast Asia. We are happy to share the Global Polio Eradication Initiative's statement on the Polio-Free Certification of the WHO's Southeast Asia Region. We encourage you to share this information with your fellow Rotarians, friends and family. Here are some additional resources to help you share the good news. Key Messages Recent News Stories On March 27, 2014, 1.8 billion people across 11 countries are polio-free thanks to unprecedented commitment from governments, exceptional program quality, and the dedication of millions of community health workers and volunteers. Ending polio in these countries some of which have been polio-free for more than 15 years forged strong systems that are now being used to advance other health priorities. 8 How Will This Year End? Are You the Tortoise or the Hare? Slow and steady win the race. Each year, annual giving expands Rotary s capacity to serve because it generates much of the funding on which Rotary Clubs and Rotarians depend for our Service Above Self. Half of what we give this year to Annual Fund-SHARE will be returned to our District in as District Designated Funds (DDF), which will be available to commit to District Grants, Global Grants, Packaged Grants, Rotary Scholar programs, as well as support for Polio and Rotary Peace Centers. Over the past several years, Rotarians and clubs that wait until late May or June to send their final contributions to The Rotary Foundation have frequently found that they waited too late to have their gifts credited to the current Rotary Year. Their delay means that their gifts will not be available to do good in our communities for four years. Delays also often result in clubs being ineligible for recognitions and awards. Don t let that happen to you or to your club. Let your gift count this year. Give now to the Annual Fund-SHARE. How can you best ensure that your gift will be credited during the current Rotary Year? Online Giving: Giving could not be faster online using a credit card: Gifts by Telephone, or Fax: A call today to Rotary s Contact Center ( ) will help speed your gift. Waiting until June, during high-volume calling times, will likely result in long delays. You also can or fax your gifts: contact.center@rotary.org. Fax: Regardless how you send your gift, please send it with a completed contribution form. Check or Draft Payments: Please make your check or draft payable to "The Rotary Foundation. Send it with the completed contribution form to postmarked on or before June 30, to arrive no later than July 5: The Rotary Foundation Collections Center Drive Chicago, IL Funds that are sent by overnight carrier must arrive by the close of business on June 30. Wire or Electronic Transfer: To make a gift by wire or electronic transfer, send your electronic contribution and submit a contribution form. For wire, you can your form to trf.arinquiries@rotary.org or fax it to after the wire has been completed. District 7610 experienced its own version of March Madness this year, ending the month with an historic fifth consecutive year of Annual Fund giving above $200 per capita. This has never before been accomplished by any Rotary district among the 29 districts in Rotary Zones 33 and 34, which make up the southeastern United States and parts of the Caribbean. This legacy has included the District Governor terms of PDGs Horace McCormack, Ron Marion, Jon Allan, Steve Cook, and DG Juanita Cawley. But, we will not rest on our laurels. District 7610 still has a long ways to go before meeting its Challenge Goal of Annual Fund giving of $575,000 and $262 per capita!
