BY PDG CHUCK DAVIDSON, DISTRICT ROTARY FOUNDATION CHAIR The first Future Vision Grants Management Workshop was held on October 6 in Charlottesville. Area Foundation Advisor Wayne Murphy was the Event Coordinator for this first of five workshops that will be available regionally between now and December 15. Thank you, Wayne, for a job well done! Twelve trainees were present for the training, which is required for clubs to qualify for funding from The Rotary Foundation beginning in Rotary Year Rotary Clubs that were represented at the first workshop included Albemarle County, Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville, and Warsaw. These four clubs have successfully completed the first of two requirements to qualify for Rotary Foundation funds (grants, scholarships, Vocational Training Teams, Group Study Exchange). The second requirement is signing the Memorandum of Understanding that was provided them. Trainers for the first Grants Management Workshop were PDGs Sandy Duckworth and Travis White, and they were outstanding. Content of the Workshop was well-received and excellently prepared and presented. For information about the four remaining regional workshops that will take place between October 20 and December 15, see page two of this newsletter and register online at Although there is no cost, you must register for this event. Want to See Something REALLY Scary? Imagine a world in which there is no Rotary. BY SCOTT MILLS, PHS CHAIR & NEWSLETTER EDITOR Every year about this time, my children begin making plans for Halloween. Daddy, can we carve the pumpkin tonight? Mommy, will you make a Harry Potter costume for me? Part of that family tradition includes an evening watching The Wizard of Oz. Inevitably, the little hands of my eight year-old daughter cover her eyes at the sight of the Wicked Witch of the West. I ll have to admit, she frightened me as a child, also. As an adult, I ve learned there are far more frightening things in this world than anything conjured up by Hollywood. An orphaned child goes to sleep hungry each night, huddled under a bridge. A mother has to give her children contaminated water from a stream that flows through a dump. A village cemetery fills with the bodies of hundreds of children who died from preventable diseases. All over the world more than 24,000 children under age five will die today from preventable illness and hunger. These are frightening realities. Where can a world full of despair find any hope? From Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation, that s where. More than 34,000 Rotary Clubs in more than 200 countries and territories, leveraging the giving power of more than 1.2 million Rotarians, provide hope each day through our Service Above Self. We bring safe, clean water to thirsty villages. We immunize over two billion children. We conquer disease. We teach emerging leaders how to end wars and to resolve conflicts. In almost every corner of the globe Rotarians are serving to end poverty, ignorance, disease, famine, and conflict. Through our annual gifts to The Rotary Foundation s Annual Fund (Share), we help provide the financial support for our fellow Rotarians to do good in the world. Give today to The Rotary Foundation and help Rotarians make the world a less scary place in which to live.

7 Rotary Promises to Raise an Additional $75 Million Dollars to Conquer Polio $700 Million Funding Shortfall Threatens to Erase Thirty Years of Progress. Rotary International has made a new funding commitment of US$75 million over three years to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). Rotary, which has already contributed nearly $1.2 billion to the GPEI, announced the commitment at a 27 September high-level side event on polio eradication, convened by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The side event -- Our Commitment to the Next Generation: The Legacy of a Polio-free World -- brought together leaders of the remaining endemic countries, and representatives of donor governments, development agencies, the GPEI partners, and the media to underscore the urgent need to finish the job of global polio eradication. Although the wild poliovirus is endemic only in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria, other countries are still at risk for re-established transmission of the virus through its importation from the endemics. More than $700 million is needed to complete the job of global polio eradication. As long as there exists just one case of polio in the world, the risk of global re-infection remains very real. Ban urged UN member states to ramp up their support for the GPEI, launched in 1988 by Rotary, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The partnership now includes the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the United Nations Foundation. This decisive moment is a matter of health and justice. Every child should have the right to start life with equal protection from this disease. That s why I have made eradicating polio a top priority for my second term as Secretary-General, said Ban. Have you visited Rotary International s newest website, Visit and sign the global petition that advocates renewed commitment for Rotary s eradication efforts. During a recent visit to the headquarters of Rotary International in Evanston, IL, as part of the Rotary District 7610 leadership, McLean Rotarian Vance Zavela and his wife Jean Schiro-Zavela were inducted into The Rotary Foundation s Arch C.
