Staff Directory and New Members List District Governor s Message Dear District 7610 Rotarians and Family, A ttending the annual Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center Spring Conference, for me, is one of the highlights of the Rotary year. Held in April of each year, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, this year was the eleventh conference. I was joined by five other Rotarians from our district to celebrate the graduation of the Class of Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Fellows. At the Duke-UNC Center, fellows are enrolled in either Duke s Master of International Development Policy or UNC s Master s programs under various relevant departments. This year s Peace Fellows came from Australia, Italy, Brazil, Palestine, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya to advance research, teaching, publication and knowledge of issues of peace, causes of conflict, and world understanding. They made active use of that knowledge through their Applied Field Experience internship which has helped set the stage for the next phase of their lives: working to resolve conflicts and create peace throughout the world. It was a full day program and listening to twelve Peace Fellows tell their stories was wonderfully inspiring. I had the pleasure of joining Fellow Reem Ghunaim from Palestine for lunch. Reem has said that Being a Rotary Peace Fellow is more than the educational opportunity that I have been given it is an experience that has made me reflect deeply on who I am and what I can do to build peace. She spent her internship in Fiji where her job consisted of helping the people of the Pacific, to become more involved in the decision making (Continued on page 2) Page 1

process that affects their lives. The job entailed utilizing economic development to develop a methodology of peace building. There she says, she learned the golden rule of peace building: that it starts in our daily lives, in our perceptions and in our passions. Reem has focused her career on development by promoting art and enhancing intercultural exchanges and mutual understanding. Her mission is to empower individuals and communities by promoting progressive strategic development. She has focused her master s thesis on social entrepreneurship. She is interested in people and community empowerment and how that contributes to a sustainable economy and peaceful lives. Peace to Reem is dynamic and requires continual action. She quotes Mother Teresa in saying, Peace begins with a smile, so she sends her invitation to all to smile with me while in our journey for true peace. To say the least, it was a most inspiring day. I came away so proud of these Peace Fellows and what they have done and will do to help bring peace to the world. I came away, too, thinking of how proud I am to be a Rotarian and what Rotary is doing to help bring peace to the world through these Fellows and the encouragement it gives members to be active in peacemaking. Finally, I came away almost tearful with joy thinking, indeed, Peace is Possible. Please make plans to join us next April when we will once again return to Chapel Hill and hear the next class of Fellows share more inspiring stories and further advance Rotary s quest for peace. Yours in Rotary Service, Juanita Cawley Governor Rotary International, District Rotary is Everywhere! 3 2014 Speech Contest Finals By Chris Hoecke, Bailey s Crossroads, Contest Chair T he District Speech Contest finals were held Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library (CRRL) in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Nine finalists from across the District competed with speeches prepared for this year s Rotary theme, Engage Rotary, Change Lives. Again this year, our distinguished panel of judges carefully listened and rated each speech on the quality of delivery and presentation; content and originality. It was a difficult task for the judges because ALL contestants were very poised and fully prepared! For those of us in the audience, we were truly touched as each contestant spoke with passion as they spoke of personal experiences that related to Engaging Rotary and Changing Lives. Speech contest results for all those dying to know! 2014 District 7610 Speech Contest Finalists: Aryeh Miller School sponsored by the Charlottesville Rotary Club Anna Essex High School sponsored by the Tappahannock Rotary Club Keri - North Stafford High School sponsored by the Fredericksburg Club George - Liberty High School sponsored by the Warrenton Rotary Club Romayit JEB Stuart High School sponsored by the Bailey s Crossroads Rotary Club John Manassas Park High School sponsored by the Manassas Rotary Club 2014 District 7610 Speech Contest Winners: Laura 3 rd place winner, sponsored by the Falls Church Rotary Club Gabe 2 nd place winner, sponsored by the Leesburg-Daybreak Rotary Club Logan 1 st place winner, sponsored by the Purcellville Rotary Club (Continued on page 4) Page 3

This year, Logan learned he would be competing out of state for another worthy event, so we were very pleased that Gabe, will also receive 1 st place honors and present at the District Conference Youth Plenary Session on April 26, According to our Lead Judge (and District speech contest veteran), Martha Crimmins, ranking these competitors to determine the top three is especially difficult! For those of us who were there, we heartily agree! Thank you to all the Rotary Clubs and the Assistant Governors who actively participated in the speech contest this year. And for all those new club officers and boards out there it s not too late to put this on your list of youth service initiatives for next Rotary Year!!!! If you do, you too will be proud and inspired this time next year, but more importantly, as Rotarians you WILL have made a hands-on difference in the life of a student in your community and you will have made a friend of Rotary for life! 5 Dunn Loring-Merrifield Club Reaches Out By Ed Hogg, Dunn Loring-Merrifield Editor s Note: Here are three examples of how one club is reaching out into the local community. Recently our club was honored to have Jade Leedham, Development Manager with Alternative House and Burt Heacock, fellow Rotarian and board member with Alternative House to accept our donation of $1,500. Jade spoke about how Alternative House is transforming the lives of children, youth and young adults in our community, by helping them stay safe, make positive decisions, achieve educational success and overcome personal crises. Learn more by visiting The Dunn Loring-Merrifield Rotary was honored to provide George Mason University School of Management $10,000 towards scholarships from our club's annual 2013 Golf Tournament. Claiborne Gayden, Director of Development at the School of Management addressed our group and accepted the donation. Volunteers from the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Rotary Club helped pack 1500 meals in conjunction with the Assistance League of Northern Virginia and Dominion Power. The meals are distributed to 5 area Elementary Schools for students in need. Page 5

W ith the realization that many of our fellow citizens did not understand what Rotary is, how we work, what our values are, and the contributions that Rotary makes to our local community and around the world, the Rappahannock-Fredericksburg club initiated a Weekly Rotary Minute public service announcement on a local radio station WFLS. Pictured are some of the club members who have participated in the program spots so far. The program began in May 2013 and has shared a variety of subjects with our community. Some of the subjects covered in the weekly 60 second message are: The four way test By Ken Tomayko, Rappahannock-Fredericksburg Fight against polio and how close we are to achieving our goal Involvement in International projects Support of orphanage and schools in Africa Donation of portable dental chairs to used in third world countries Eye clinics in which our members participate in Honduras. Involvement in community projects Preparing and serving dinner to the community (primarily homeless) Cleaning up Rappahannock River both by donating boat to be used to monitor the river and physically cleaning up trash on river banks Assisting various non-profits in their community projects. Pictured along with members of the Rappahannock- Fredericksburg club is Bonnie Miller from WFLS who assisted club members in producing the announcements. Page 6

2014 District Awards District Rotarian Spouse Award The Rotarian Spouse/Partner Award recognizes spouses and partners of Rotarians who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service through Rotary. Recipient: The District recipient of this award goes to Ailenda Ling Mangan, spouse, of Tom Mangan from the Rotary Club of McLean. Ling serves beside her husband at almost every Rotary club event. She has volunteered at multiple Stop Hunger Now events and has participated in entertaining and hosting former Group Study Exchange members. Having been an educator for over 30 years, her heart is in helping children and young adults to succeed in school. She assists her husband in his review of scholarship candidates and makes recommendations based upon her years of experience. She attends student interviews and has served as a liaison with the local adult education program where she once worked. As the mother of a child who contracted polio, she has a special affinity for the efforts of Rotary International to stamp out the disease and does all she can to support these efforts. Rotary International Vocational Leadership Award DG Juanita Cawley with Ling and Tom The Vocational Service Leadership Award recognizes Rotarians who have made a significant impact in advancing vocational service. Recipient: This year s recipient is Su Yong Min from the Rotary Club of Bailey s Crossroads. Su Yong Min has exemplified integrity and high ethical standards in her vocation and in Rotary, used her vocational talents to serve the community and has personally undertaken mentoring in her vocation, organizing a vocational service discussion to inspire other to take action, taught other club members about her vocation, and participated in business networking events that introduce non-rotarians to the principles of vocational service Su Yong Min Receives her award (Continued on page 11) Page 10

District 7610 Club Significant Achievement Award This award recognizes Rotary clubs for outstanding community service projects. Recipient: The Rotary Club of Gloucester is recognized for their significant achievement in serving their local community through sponsorship of the annual Chesapeake Bay Conference for Youth. The Rotary Club of Gloucester originally chartered in May of The club charter was relinquished in 1943 due to the fact that many members had to drive even twenty miles to the Court House where the club held its meetings, and during the gas rationing of World War II attendance became impossible. In 1962, the club received its new charter and has been highly successful ever Members of the Gloucester Club including their President, Steve Callis, next to DG Juanita Cawley on the right and the Rotary International President s Representative, PDG Rich Rowland from District 5650 on the left. since, having celebrated their 50 th anniversary in For more than 20 years now the club has sponsored a five-day conference for up to 24 qualifying rising junior and senior high school students throughout Rotary District 7610 and beyond. Begun in 1991 by Rotarians who grew up on the western shores of the Chesapeake Bay, the conference strives to help new generations of young people appreciate the issues facing the Chesapeake Bay. Students have studied crabs, oysters, fisheries, sea grasses, underwater geology, wetlands, pollution and reclamation efforts through interactive activities including canoeing instruction, field trips to Reedville to tour the fisherman s museum and the living shoreline gardens and talks with commercial pound net fishermen and a director of the menhaden fishing operation. Students travel by ferry from Reedville to historic Tangier Island to talk with residents about island issues. The club remains deeply concerned about the health of the Bay which is threatened by excess nutrients in the water from treated wastewater, runoff from agricultural areas, and runoff from suburban areas such as lawn and garden fertilizers and septic systems which deplete oxygen from the water thus killing fish and plant life. It is hoped that this conference raises the awareness of the future generations of leaders who will be called on to address the continuing Bay preservation issues. (Continued on page 12) Page 11

TRF Distinguished Service Award This is an internationally competitive award granted annually worldwide to a maximum of 50 Rotarians who have exhibited exceptional service to The Rotary Foundation. A recipient must demonstrate a broad range of service over an extended period of time. The Distinguished Service Award is the Foundation s highest service recognition. Recipient: Travis White, of the Rotary Club of Burke, is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of The Rotary Foundation. Travis White, center, along with DG Juanita Cawley and RI President s Representative, Rich Rowland Past District Governor Travis White served on the District 7610 Rotary Foundation Committee continuously from 2002 to present. He served as PolioPlus Chair, Annual Giving Chair, District Governor, District Rotary Foundation Chair, and Future Vision Training and Stewardship Chair. In each role he distinguished himself through exemplary service to The Rotary Foundation, its programs and funds. As DRFC and Annual Giving Chair, he fostered a climate of giving that led to record trends in district giving. In under his leadership, District 7610 ranked 7 th in the world in per capita giving and was the first district in Zones 33 or 34 to reach $200 per capita and to exceed $400,000 in annual program fund giving. He played a leadership role in preparing District 7610 for its transition to Future Vision by conducting a series of highly acclaimed workshops to training and qualify 100% of the clubs in the district well in advance of implementation. He personally instructed more than 120 club representatives in those sessions. These are but a few of his many contributions to The Rotary Foundation and District RI Service Above Self Award Each day, Rotarians around the world give their time and effort to serve others, often without recognition. Since 1992, The RI Service Above Self Award had honored Rotarians who demonstrate exemplary humanitarian service and embody our motto of Service Above Self. This award recognizes Rotarians for their humanitarian service, rather than their service to Rotary. The Service Above Self Award is Rotary s highest honor and recognizes up to 150 Rotarians each year worldwide who demonstrate their commitment to helping others by volunteering their time and talents. (Continued on page 13) Page 12

Recipient: The recipient of the Rotary International Service Above Self Award is Lois Wilson of the Rotary Club of McLean. Rich Rowland, Lois Wilson, and Juanita Cawley During her Group Study Exchange vocational visit to District 9250, Lois Wilson s team visited Swaziland's St. Joseph's School for the Disabled. This chance, single day of her Group Study Exchange trip inspired the beginning of an educational and dental outreach program in Swaziland. In rapid succession, she and her project partner undertook an exploratory mission to Swaziland in 2009 to create project goals and partnerships, launched the project s first dental outreach program there in 2011, and organized and facilitated their second dental outreach program in 2013 while cementing their ties with the Swazi government, which provides dental therapists and supplies during their project visits. The project, with both educational and dental components, is an excellent example of sustainable humanitarian service that has markedly improved the skills and dental health of disabled students in Swaziland. In just the 2013 visit alone, she and the dental partners provided free dental health screenings to 458 Swaziland children, 132 extractions, 83 emergency fillings, and 13 scalings/ polishings. She also provided free fluoride/varnishing for hundreds of children. Then to increase the sustainable impact of these dental procedures, preventative education for every child, teacher, parent, and house mother/father who attended, together with free toothpaste and floss was provided. President s Volunteer Service Award During National Volunteer Week, April 6-12, Wayne Chiles, a member of the Rotary Club of Springfield, Virginia, was recognized by President Obama and humanitarian organization, ShelterBox USA with the President s Volunteer Service Award for his efforts in 2013 to assist disaster survivors. Through his efforts of raising awareness and funds for ShelterBox, the organization was able to respond to more than 25 disasters in 19 countries last year, providing families with disaster relief tents, cook stoves, water filters, blankets, mosquito nets, children s packs and other essential equipment. The President s Volunteer Service Award is a special recognition presented on behalf of President Barack Obama. The award is part of a national recognition program created in 2003 through the President s Council on Service and Civic Participation for individuals of all ages who contribute a significant amount of time to volunteer activities. 14 District Rotarian of the Year By Rosanne Bunting, Awards Committee Chair R oy Strohl, from the Rotary Club of Rappahannock-Fredericksburg, looked genuinely surprised as he made his way to the stage to receive the Rotarian of the Year award from District Governor Juanita Cawley at the District Reunion Saturday night Banquet. Known for his winning smile (somehow missing in the photo), Roy was all smiles when he addressed the clapping crowd. Roy has had an outstanding Rotary career and continues to serve both the District and his home club. His personal achievements have been numerous and outstanding. Roy earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1956 and went on to earn both a bronze and silver palm. He served as an assistant Scout Master in Fort Wayne Indiana, and was a regional scout leader for the 1957 International Scout Jamboree held at Valley Forge Pennsylvania. He was the assigned scout to escort then Vice-President Nixon at the opening ceremonies of the Jamboree. To this day, Roy s legacy with the Boy Scouts continues with his involvement in the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians, and he is now a lifetime member of the IFSR. When Roy moved to the Fredericksburg area, he was asked to start a new Rotary club. And so he did in In keeping with his leadership tradition, he served as his Club s Charter President. A firm believer in leading by example, Roy has thirty-two years of perfect attendance and actively promotes make-ups; particularly to the club s new members. He has made up meetings at clubs in Europe, Canada and throughout the United States. Over the years, Roy has served as Area Representative from ; worked on the District 7610 Transition Team; served as District Conference co-chair; served on the Awards Committee in 2005; served as District Foundation Annual Giving Chair and has served as and Area Foundation Advisor since Roy led his club to be the second 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club and the first 100% Multiple Paul Harris Fellow. He is a Paul Harris Fellow +7, and one of the very early members to join Rotary Foundation s Bequest Society. Knowing that membership is the key to a strong Rotary Club, he has brought more than two dozen new members into the Rotary family. He practices the 4-Way test in everything he does. He has served on the boards of local and service groups, such as the Salvation Army, YMCA, American Heart Association, and the Association of Virginia Antiquities. In addition to these local organizations, he served a lengthy term as the area s representative on the U.S. National Parks Citizens Advisory Council. Roy is committed to improving the world around him. He has been a leader in community service groups in every community where he has lived. His dedication has not gone without notice. He was honored by the Rappahannock-Fredericksburg Rotary Club as Rotarian of the Year in 2000 and 2003; Recipient of the District Service Above Self Award and the Rotary Foundation District Service Award in Page 14

Tappahannock Salutes Fellow Rotarians in Greece By Joe Wolfinger, Tappahannock A s is our tradition, our club recently toasted the Athens Attiki Club and after our , we received a very nice response from the Club's president. A few days later we received a copy of the Club's magazine which contains my to the Athens Club president, our certificate and his response. It was very nice and gave us a sense that we are, in some small way, fostering a sense of goodwill with our Rotary brothers around the world. Here are copies of our correspondence. Dear Mr. Varotsos, In order to remind our members that Rotary is an international organization, our club, the Tappahannock, Virginia, Rotary Club, of District # 7610, USA, begins its weekly meetings with a toast of a club in another country. At our meeting on April 3, 2014 (the day the Modern Olympics was began), we saluted your club. The attached certificate documents our toast. Our Club meets on Thursday evenings at 6:00 pm at the Roma Restaurant in Tappahannock, Virginia. If you or any of your members are ever in our area we hope you will join us. We wish you the best success in all your Rotary endeavors. Sincerely, Joe Wolfinger International Chair Dear Rotarian Fellows Norman and Josef, Cordially thanks for your very nice and rotary much friendly gesture even more for your toast to our Club on the date that the 1st Olympic Games begun in Athens in 1896.At the next meeting of our Club on May 6, 2014 (after the Eastern holidays and the District Congress) I shall ask our members to lift their glasses to the success and prosperity of your Club and its very kind members. 16 Why I Want to Remain a Rotarian By Glen Yarborough, McLean D uring the current Rotary Year, District 7610 has added a total of 203 new members. However, during the same time frame we have lost 199 members, for a net gain of 4 Rotarians. Despite our best recruitment efforts, our district cannot grow if we fail to retain members. We are working to increase retention through meaningful programs, sustainable service projects, mentorships, showing an interest in our clubs, interesting fireside chats, and focusing on each individual member. We try to ask each member why they wanted to be a Rotarian and then service that itch. Governor, District Membership Chair and Committee, Assistant Governors and Area Membership Coordinators as well as our Membership Chairs and Club Presidents have assisted each club to develop and implement realistic and practical membership plans and objectives. Each club is different with its own personality and size, and each has implemented these strategies in their own unique way. Some of the thoughts were to: Emphasize to current and prospective members the benefits of Rotary membership, focusing on how value that clubs provide their members, including the quality of the Rotary product (four-way test and object of Rotary) and viewing members as customers providing exemplary customer service. This would include creating relationships, service, networking and family programs. Improve communications to include club websites, social media, district website, publish new members on the club website, club collaboration, and coordination with Public Image. Perform regular club assessments to include classification review, review of former Rotarians, leads sent from Rotary international, family members, Alumni, New Generations, Rotaract/ Interact Clubs, young adults, under represented population and exit surveys. Prepare innovative and interesting club Programs. Engage members to include club projects, mentorships, red badge new member orientation and formal induction, fireside chats, published club calendar of events, social events and family events, and club and district leadership opportunities. Involve members in education and training to include club assemblies and district training opportunities. Utilize resources from Rotary International to include Membership Minute, Webinars, club membership committee manual, new member orientation guide, club assessment handbook, planning guide for effective Rotary clubs, brochures and templates, and Rotary Club Central. Recognize clubs for achievements including the Presidential Citation, recognition on websites, and a number of awards within the district. Extend club options to include E-Clubs, Military clubs and clubs with alternate meeting times and formats. (Continued on page 17) Page 16

We realize that the larger we grow the more Service we are able to provide and the more Good that we can do. We want practical, solid growth increasing membership incrementally one individual at a time using strategies reflecting the use of best practices from the field, and servicing that itch. Despite all these good words and plans we are barely breaking even. We need your help, the fine Rotarians of District We need to each bring in a new member that will be as good a Rotarian as you are. Thanks for your help and for listening!! If we can be of any assistance, please call me 703/ Juanita is Everywhere! DG Juanita at the first Founder's Day Parade in Stafford County. The county is in the midst of a year-long celebration of its 350th anniversary. The county partnered with North Stafford-Garrisonville Rotary to produce the parade, which featured a salute to Stafford County soldiers through the history. Page 17
