1 November is Foundation Month...Hold at least one Foundation program this month! NOVEMBER 2002 Official newsletter serving the 53 clubs in Rotary District 7610 New Zealand through the Eyes of a GSE Team Member by Lt. Jon Ober, Mathews Rotary Club New Zealand When most people think of that far-off country they think of sheep and kiwi fruit. Having had the chance to actually go there as part of Rotary International s Group Study Exchange (GSE), I have had the tremendous experience of finding out for myself just how much more there is to that beautiful country which is located off the southeast coast of Australia. In May of 2001, I joined four other non- Rotarians and Lester Schoene, Jr, a Rotarian and (Annandale RC) and our group leader, on a five-anda-half week adventure which took us all over the north half of the North Island of New Zealand. Since they are located in the Southern Hemisphere, we arrived as autumn was slowly turning to winter. In spite of that fact, I was immediately and continually impressed with the green lushness of the country and the breathtaking beauty of the scenery which the Kiwi s are so proud of and work so hard to preserve. The low hills, rocky beaches, rolling farmlands and extinct volcanoes make up some of the most dramatic scenery found on Earth. However, this paled in comparison to the hospitality bestowed on us by the Northland and Auckland Rotarians. They are some of the warmest, most welcoming people I have ever met. Wherever we traveled to present our Rotary program to the various clubs we were made to feel as part of their family. Sometime during the trip, it dawned on me that we were in fact part of their family. The New Zealand clubs that we visited enthusiastically embrace the Rotary ideal that we are all part of a worldwide family, and we each have a mission to enlighten, educate and help others. Each of my team members were given excellent opportunities to meet and work with our professional counterparts. We had the invaluable chance to observe their farming practices, schools and social welfare services, seafood industries, boating and marine industries and their very important environmental practices. Personally, I had the outstanding pleasure of working with several of their Conservation Officers. New Zealand is proud of their extremely unique flora and fauna. Although the country comprises only about.07% of the world s land mass, they are home to approximately 14% of the world s endangered species. The Officers I worked with are truly dedicated professionals who care about the land and the wildlife they serve. The Rotary International GSE program is an extremely valuable part of what Rotary is all about. I am lucky enough to have been a part of a very professional team as a result of having been chosen for this exchange. Because of my positive experience and impressions with the program and with Rotary, I am now a member of the Mathews County club and I look forward to many years of service to my fellow Rotarians and to the public, for which service beyond self is a basic Rotary philosophy. Thank you for this opportunity. Lt. Jon Ober, of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, is based in Williamsburg (757) CONGRATULATIONS to: The TOP THREE CLUBS in Per Capita Annual Giving, Baileys Crossroads $ Rappahannock-Fredericksburg $ Herndon $ The TOP THREE CLUBS in Total Annual Giving, Rappahannock-Fredericksburg $22, Bailey s Crossroads $20, Herndon $15, District 7610 website: RI Website:

NOTICES and REMINDERS... December 31, 2002 is the final deadline for Rotary Foundation receipt of applications for Community Assistant Program Grants (CAP), Discovery Grants, Helping Grants, Humanitarian Transportation Grants, and New Opportunity Grants for the Rotary Year. Clubs wishing to apply for any of the above grants should get in touch immediately with D7610 Grants Chairperson Vance Zavela at vance.zavela@att.net. Scholarships Awarded for Academic Year by PDG D.R. Butler (Mt Vernon RC), Scholarship Committee Chair The District 7610 Scholarship Committee met September 14, 2002 at George Mason University. Thirteen applicants were interviewed, two each from the Arlington and Reston Clubs; one each from Falls Church, Blue Ridge Mountain, McLean, Charlottesville, Alexandria, Vienna, Dunn Loring, Alexandria West-End, and Crystal City Clubs. The committee selected Matthew P. Whelan who was sponsored by the Vienna club, to receive the academic one-year Ambassadorial Scholarship ($25,000); and Ling Ling Phung, sponsored by the Arlington Club, to receive the three-month Cultural Scholarship ($12,000). Matthew, a University of Virginia graduate, is currently serving in the Peace Corps in The Republic of Honduras. He plans to study Ecological Agriculture. Ling Ling is a graduate of the College of William & Mary. She plans to study French in Senegal. This is the first time that the district has received and processed 13 applications. We are on a roll. I expect more applications for Academic year To improve our presence in the communities, I recommend that clubs consider pursuing qualified law enforcement officers, schoolteachers and other public service personnel who would benefit from receiving a cultural scholarship to improve their foreign language proficiency. Just think of the contributions they would be able to make after they return to their community and their job. Special Paul Harris Fellow Certificate Available ASpecial Paul Harris Fellow Certificate bearing the polio eradication fundraising campaign logo will be given to all donors who make a US$1,000 contribution to the polio campaign. A donor who reaches the next US$1,000 level with a campaign donation will also receive this special certificate. 2

3 GOVERNOR S MESSAGE Sandy Duckworth, DG Sow the Seeds of Love and Show Rotary Cares WOW! What an exciting way to kick off Foundation Month! Let s end the 2002 Calendar Year with outstanding support to the Foundation. And remember what two bits a day can do (with inflation the 25 cents is now up to 27.5 cents a day) and YES!! Two bits a day can really make a difference: Give sight to three people in India Provide four wells to a rural village in Zimbabwe Provide prosthetic limbs to two people in Thailand Provide a hearing aide for a deaf child in Pakistan Supply textbooks for an entire elementary school in Zambia Thank you again for filling up the Change Here Miracles There cups that, as you can see, really will make a difference.
