District 7610 is once again a leader of the 15 districts in Rotary Zone 33. Of course, giving to The Rotary Foundation is not a competition, but it is helpful to know how our district stacks up against the other districts in our extremely generous and compassionate Zone 33. Here s the breakdown: Annual Fund Per Capita $ #1 Annual Fund Total $679,982 #3 Total Giving (includes the Endowment) $826,431 #5 PolioPlus $129,992 #4 Percentage of Sustainers 61% #5 PHS Members 267 #2 What makes this data so significant is that the most important statistic is the Annual Fund Per Capita (#1) because it is based on the amount of total giving to the Annual Fund divided by the number of Rotarians in the district and not the total amount given (more members=more contributions). Our district is small in number compared to the others that placed above us in the other categories. Also, D7610 had ALL clubs giving to the Annual Fund SHARE and PolioPlus. Total giving was the highest in the past five years and AF Per Capita was the highest in District 7610 history! Bryan Hulscher has just been appointed as the new Annual Giving Officer for Zones 33 & 34. Bryan has 14 years of fund development experience, including service at YMCA of the USA (national resource office), Motorola Solutions Foundation, U.S. Peace Corps (Botswana), and Robert R. McCormick Foundation. He is also a member of the Association of Donor Relations Professionals. If you need help or have questions, please contact Bryan at, bryan.hulscher@rotary.org or Tel: Page In Motion: The Rotary Foundation Newsletter of District 7610 September 2018

4 Two Different Peacebuilder Club Recognitions? OR? Rotary District 7610 Peacebuilder Club Alas, yes there are two. But, we can turn this problem into an opportunity. But first, an explanation. Our District 7610 has been on the leading edge of club and district peacebuilding in the world of Rotary. We began our effort toward becoming a Peacebuilder district in 2013 and after recognition, have sustained that status. We established two youth peacebuilding programs Charlottesville and the Middle Peninsula through the NEWGEN Peacebuilder organization. We have sponsored a district program dedicated to peacebuilding for several years the next one on October 27th (see below). In 2016, our district started a Peacebuilder Club recognition. Recently, the Rotary Action Group for Peace (RAGFP) began a Peacebuilder Club recognition also. Hence a problem for some because of confusion about which one is better and with which one to become involved. The opportunity toward solving this problem is easy. Both are excellent programs and recognitions. So, become involved with and recognized by BOTH! Our D7610 Peacebuilder Club criteria for has been published see the district August issue of TRF newsletter or go to the district website for complete details. The RAGFP criteria may be found on their website under the Peacebuilder tab. Don t you wish all problems were so easily solved? Don t wait, put your Peacebuilder committee together right away and begin your journey toward being recognized by District 7610 AND the RAGFP as a Peacebuilder Club for RY ! But wait there s more! The next TRF newsletter will contain details about the new Rotary Peace Academy. Page 4 In Motion: The Rotary Foundation Newsletter of District 7610 September 2018

5 Foundation Spotlight TRF club chair Tony Fulkerson Tony is the Co-Founder and Partner of EldenStreet Financial, specializing in financial, business and estate planning. Tony works with a select group of clients to provide retirement and estate planning services, as well as wealth management services. He achieves great satisfaction in helping clients achieve their life goals and dreams. Within the community, Tony has dedicated countless hours to volunteer organizations. He has served on the boards of numerous community service organizations and is a Past President of the Herndon Rotary Club. Tony is passionate in advocating the fight against Alzheimer s and is committed to accelerating the global effort to eliminate this dreadful disease. Tony and his wife, Tony (center) enjoys a day at the Rosemary, reside in Great Falls. Tony joined the Herndon Rotary Club in Tony recalls the invitation, "I turned beach with his family. him down several times, but my friend and accountant Tom Trask was persistent in asking me to attend a meeting. I have thanked him many times for not giving up on me. Tony went on to serve as the Rotary Club of Herndon President ( ) and is serving now as The Rotary Foundation chair for the club. Tony offers the following reflections on his Rotary journey. I enjoy Rotary because Rotarians are enthusiastic people of action who are making a difference in the world. I find the giving spirit of the members of our club uplifting and contagious and I share the Rotary story with everyone I meet. It is truly amazing how my Rotary friends rise to a cause when the need is present. The Four-way Test is not just words we recite at a meeting they apply in how we live every day. I have introduced Rotary to numerous business associates and colleagues and many have become outstanding Rotarians. I am passionate about the Rotary Foundation and its mission of doing good around the world. The Foundation takes our donations and transforms them into projects affecting change right in our community and globally. Herndon Rotarians believe in the Foundation and have donated over $300,000. During our spring giving campaign we sent a letter to all our members promoting the good work of the Foundation. I also held a drawing and entered the names of all members who donated a minimum of $250 during the Spring campaign. The prize was a beautiful wine basket donated by a local restaurant valued at $100. As a financial advisor, I speak every day with clients about their charitable giving and legacy goals. What I have learned professionally translates to easy conversations with my fellow Rotarians about making the Foundation a charity of their choice. One of our very successful projects partially funded by TRF district grants is our Senior Prom. The 16th Annual Senior Prom sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Herndon and Reston was held last spring. Three hundred fifty two seniors registered the largest number we have ever had. The attendees enjoyed wonderful music, dance instructions, a delicious meal and prom photos. The room was decorated in a Hawaiian theme with pineapples on the tables and leis and flowers! The Interact Clubs from Herndon and South Lakes high schools greeted the seniors, helped with the photos and brought plates of food to those who needed help. 8 Peter s Page My Non-Rotary Rotary Moment What makes you passionate about Rotary? What got you to join Rotary and even more important, what has kept you in Rotary. I am sure you all have heard numerous Rotary leaders speak of their "Rotary Moment the event that inspired them to embrace Rotary. I thought I would tell you about my equivalent. What makes it interesting is that it occurred long before I joined Rotary International or even knew about Rotary International or The Rotary Foundation, so I call it my "Non-Rotary" Rotary Moment. The year was I was an officer in the U.S. Army and assigned to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO). My duty was with the UN Observer Group Lebanon, which monitored the borders between Israel and Lebanon. I lived in Israel and manned observation posts (OPs) and conducted unarmed patrols in southern Lebanon. Peter Anderson, District Annual Fund Chair Southern Lebanon was governed by multiple militias at the time. Think of the feudal middle ages, but with modern weapons and that is what you had. The average person living there led a very basic subsistence life style. Due to the fighting that went on, they lacked clean water and many of the utilities and comforts that we took for granted. During our patrols we would visit the local villages and speak to the muktars, who were the village leaders. The muktars would always warmly greet us and offer us hot tea and cookies. This doesn't sound like much, but it came from people who had little to nothing. Offering it to us was a very big deal. They would give us lists of the many things they needed. We always explained that the UN did not have much and there were many requests for help. They were still appreciative that we would take the lists because to them we represented the United Nations and our being there showed the world cared. I have always considered that to be one of my most meaningful Army assignments. I am sure you are wondering how this relates to Rotary. When I became a Rotarian and looked at pictures of the various projects Rotarians were doing around the world in particular clean water projects I saw a common theme in them all. The recipients of the projects were happy, but not just because of what the projects would do for them, but because of what the projects and Rotary represented. Through Rotary, they knew the world cared about them. That is why when I became a Rotarian I embraced The Rotary Foundation (TRF) because through its funding, Rotarians were enabled to carry out these projects. Your donation to TRF enables Rotary projects and brings hope to millions of people showing them that Rotary and the world cares. Without your donations, Rotary projects would not exist. I hope you will consider making a recurring donation to TRF. You can still sign up through Rotary Direct for $10/month and become a Sustaining Member for RY Also, come to the District Foundation Seminar on 22 September and learn more about TRF. Thanks and I hope to see you there! TRF transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. During the past 100 years, TRF has spent $3 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects. Page 8 In Motion: The Rotary Foundation Newsletter of District 7610 September 2018

9 Three things you might not know about the Paul Harris Society 1. Why Rotarians join the Paul Harris Society (PHS). Rotarians who join the Paul Harris Society make a pledge to donate to the Rotary Foundation $1000 every year that they are financially able to do so. PHS members recognize that the Rotary Foundation has an outstanding record of utilizing donations wisely. The Foundation has achieved great results through its programs both domestically and internationally. PHS members have therefore decided to make donating to the Foundation a priority in their annual charitable giving. 2. How easy it is to join the Paul Harris Society. Michael Arietti District PHS Chair Here are three easy ways to join. 1. Log on to the Rotary website at Rotary/history/paul-harris-society (copy and paste the URL into your browser if the link does not work). Scroll down to the Join box and complete the online sign up form; or 2. Call the Rotary Member Support Center at and ask them to enroll you in the PHS; or 3. Complete the sign up form on page 10 of this newsletter and mail it to the address listed on it. And, if you also sign up for Rotary Direct, you can elect to have an automatic monthly $85 donation or a quarterly $250 donation charged to your credit card. 3. That District 7610 is a leader in support of the PHS. As of now, our District has 268 PHS members. PHS members represent 43 of our 57 clubs. We rank #2 in our Zone in PHS membership Our PHS members contributed close to half of the $536,600 that the District last year contributed to the Annual Fund. But we want to continue to grow and attract new PHS members. Our most recent member is Paul Jones of the Lake Ridge Club pictured below. Welcome Paul! PHS chair Michael Arietti presents a certificate to Paul Jones, the newest Rotary Club of Lake Ridge PHS member. Also participating in the presentation is The Rotary Foundation club chair Warren Aldrich. Page 9 In Motion: The Rotary Foundation Newsletter of District 7610 September 2018
