Apply for RY District Grants! Don t miss out June 1st! District Grant Applications for the Rotary Year are due on-line by June 1, It is recommended that each club read the Terms & Qualifications for District Grants to ensure that the proposed project being considered qualifies based on these terms. Each club submitting a grant application must have attended one of the two Grants Management Workshops, this year, and have submitted the signed MOU and the MOU Addendum to DRFC Juanita Cawley (drfc7610@cox.net) prior to any grant approval. Remember: Only one District Grant application can be accepted per club, regardless of whether it is a one club application or a submission in partnership with other clubs. When completing the application ensure that all the questions are answered and if one is not applicable for the project use n/a to indicate that. Be sure that all contact information is accurate and correct and that the application is signed. It is important that the individual who will supervise or oversee the grant be listed in the contact information. Grant maximum is $2,400 per club. Clubs are also required to add 10% or $ 240. For answers to questions or further help with the application please contact: Carol Foley, District Grants Chair: Cfdistrict7610@gmail.com or (540) Giving Deadline for RY The giving deadline this Rotary year is June 29 for donors using the U.S. Mail, wire transfers and the like. The fact that June 30 falls on a weekend is the reason being cited for this change. For any check mailed to TRF, the check must not be dated later than June 29, and the envelope must not be postmarked later than June 29. Both of these criteria have been emphasized by TRF. June 30 is the deadline date ONLY for on-line credit card donations. 2 Peace and Wine Peace and wine, what a combination! Both were on the agenda at the meeting of the Rotarians Wine Appreciation Fellowship (RWAF) this year on Saturday, April 28 th during the district conference. The annual event was held this year at the Williamsburg Winery, a short drive from the district conference site at the Kingsmill Resort. The international body of the RWAF encourages district fellowships to incorporate projects into its events. This year the D7610 RWAF decided to support the upcoming NewGen Peacebuilder project in Columbia by designating a portion of its registration fee as a donation to the Columbia project. Because of the intimacy of the wine tour and tasting, participation was limited to sixteen members and guests. Even so, a total of $250 was raised by this enthusiastic group dedicated to fine wine and lasting peace. According to the Rotary Action Group for Peace, NewGen Peacebuilders Colombia 2018 is a great example of how RAGFP collaborates with other peace organizations to provide support and funding for Rotarian peacebuilding projects. NewGen Peacebuilders is an organization co -founded by Rotary Peace Fellow Patricia Schafer. The NewGen Peacebuilders Colombia 2018 project is championed by RAGFP Board Member Dr. Amparo Buendia, as a way of honoring the 50th year of Rotractors. It recognizes the success of NewGen Peacebuilders peace education in Argentina in 2017, and seeks to spread this model into Colombia and Latin America. This Rotary peace project will enhance peace education for young people and employ the NewGen Peacebuilders model in the region. The program will train 50 Rotaractors in the head, heart and hands best practices of peacebuilding, including tools such as the Global Peace Index and Conflict Analyses, and implementation in 2018 of a significant peace project by Rotaractors who will be equipped to also define and lead other peace projects with at-risk students in Colombia. This program is recognized by the RAGFP and has relationships with important Rotary peace partners. NewGen is delivered in multiple countries including the US and Argentina, and pilots in Bolivia, says Dr. Buendia. This is excellent timing because of the anniversary year of the Rotaractors and the energy for the Business Peace Symposium in Colombia: Dialogue, Decisions and Cooperation. This project is one of several Rotary sponsored peacebuilding projects being developed in this beautiful, but war-torn nation. The D7610 RWAF is happy and proud to participant in helping Columbians turn their negative peace into a lasting and vital positive peace. If you would like to join the district 7610 RWAF, contact Bill Cawley (bcawley@cox.net). Page 2 May 2018 In Motion: The Rotary Foundation Newsletter of District 7610

3 Scholarships for Water and Sanitation Professionals by Bob Jansen, President of the RC of McLean and Chair of the District 7610 Strategic Water Alliance There is a reason water and sanitation is one of Rotary s six areas of focus. Did you know that 748 million people don t have clean drinking water and 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation? And, 1,400 children die each day from diseases caused by unsafe water and a lack of proper sanitation. To help address these issues, The Rotary Foundation (TRF) has teamed up with the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education located in Delft, the Netherlands. The IHE Delft Institute is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world. And, Rotary International is offering up to 10 scholarships for graduate study at their campus, in the Netherlands. This partnership between Rotary and the IHE Delft Institute exists to increase the number of trained professionals who can plan and implement water and sanitation solutions in the developing world and to promote long term relationships between Rotarians and these skilled water and sanitation professionals in their communities. Scholarship recipients receive a Master of Science degree in urban water and sanitation, water management, or water science and engineering. Graduates of the program work with their sponsoring Rotary Club on a related project to benefit their local community. So, if your club knows of someone from a Community-of-Need (who has an interest in pursuing such a graduate degree and wishes to use that degree to benefit their community), you may wish to be their sponsoring Rotary Club. Applications are due on June 15 th. For more information on this amazing and unique opportunity please visit: Finally, on a personal note, our District 7610 has been working this water and sanitation issue for the last 12 years through our Strategic Water Alliance ( Having been directly involved in this work prior to becoming a Rotarian and for the last five years as a Rotarian, I can tell you much of the developing world is in great need for solutions to clean water and proper sanitation. Please discuss this with your club as one of your members may very well know of a worthy candidate somewhere where a difference is waiting to be made. Your Club will benefit as well by partnering with that scholar and following the difference they will make. In Motion: The Rotary Foundation Newsletter of District 7610 May 2018 Page 3

7 Interview With District Foundation Grants Chair, Carol Foley In Motion had the pleasure of interviewing Rotarian Carol Foley, the D7610 District Foundation Grants Chair. She is a business consultant and member of the RC of Stafford, since February 19, She is a past president of that Club and has earned numerous Rotary Foundation recognitions including: Bequest Society member, Benefactor, PHS, PHF, and Sustaining Member. In Motion: I recall that you grew up in New York. Tell our readers how you came to Virginia. Was it related to your career with American Tobacco? Carol Foley: My career at American Tobacco ended when I married. Living on Long Island, at that point, I decided to work locally as an accountant with the Water Authority. As our family grew, I chose to be a stayat-home mom (one of the best decisions I have ever made). My husband, Jack, retired after 26 years in law enforcement in Suffolk County [Long Island, New York]. We looked for about three years to find property in an area that we liked and found comfortable. At that time, I was working as a campaign consultant for a number of political campaigns. Being in Washington frequently led to many trips to Virginia and here we are 27 years later. In Motion: Now, let s turn to your Rotary life. Tell our readers about your role as District Grants Chair. How long have you been serving in this role and tell us why this is so important! Carol Foley: I have been serving as the District Grants Chair for 3 1/2 years. This position has encouraged me to become dedicated to the Rotary International Foundation. The generosity of our District Rotarians is astonishing and has allowed us to support our local and international communities in so many ways. Watching food being packaged, books being supplied to schools, and participation in clean water and health programs is extremely satisfying. I look forward to this coming year watching clubs moving forward to create a better world. In Motion: Are there other Foundation-related duties that you perform? For example, we realize that there are considerable mandatory requirements tied to grants. As Chair, you must have to serve as a liaison with the Club Foundation Chair or others. Carol Foley: Grants are a challenging experience. From educating members on the grant process to making sure that we follow Rotary International Foundation guidelines takes many hours. Having a good working relationship with the DRFC [PDG Juanita Cawley] does help facilitate the many facets of grant management. District Rotarians have many questions from navigating the District website to preparing the new grants from year-to-year which does provide a many faceted experience. In Motion: Looking forward, in recognition of the success of the D7610 Foundation under DRFC, PDG Juanita Cawley, and of course your own individual contributions we understand that you will be even more busy, next year. What will be your continued role with the D7610 Foundation and your expanded responsibilities with our next District Governor, Glenn Yarborough? Carol Foley: I will be serving a continuing role as the District Grants Chair, this year. The District clubs are already looking forward to finalizing this year s grants and preparing new ones for Supporting the clubs in moving to next year will certainly keep me busy. I will be serving in three other capacities under DG Glenn Yarborough. I am honored to serve as his Chief-of-Staff, Lt. Governor for District Administration and being a part of the District Education and Development Team. In Motion: Thank you so much for taking this time with In Motion. This gives our readers a much more indepth understanding and appreciation for what you do. Carol and her husband Jack live in Stafford, VA. She has been married for over 57 years and has four children and six grandchildren.. In Motion: The Rotary Foundation Newsletter of District 7610 May 2018 Page 7

8 What is your Rotary Foundation Giving Status? By the time you read this, we will be within 45 days of closing out RY ! Where do you and your club stand on meeting your Foundation giving goals? As a quick update on the giving status, most of our clubs are doing very well, with only 9 clubs at less than 50% of the way to meeting their Annual Fund goals and 15 clubs that have not contributed to Polio- Plus. Please take a look at the TRF Monthly Contribution Report at the end of this newsletter and see where your club stands in achieving its TRF goals. Remember, if your club needs help have your president or TRF Chair contact your District Area Foundation Advisor for assistance. They are there to help. Congratulations to those Clubs that provided items for the silent auction at the District conference. We had some nice items and all of the proceeds will go to PolioPlus with either the donating club (or individual member who provided the item) receiving the recognition. Peter Anderson, District Annual Fund Chair As we get closer to the finishing this Rotary year, how many of you know what your recognition status is? How many Paul Harris points do you have? How close are you to either becoming a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) or Major Donor or achieving the next PHF or Major Donor level? Do you know how to check your status? It is easy. You can check your personal giving in My Rotary on the RI web site. Your personal report will show you every donation you have made or has been made in your name and to which fund. It may be that you are only a few dollars away from achieving the next level of recognition and those dollars can make a big difference to The Rotary Foundation. I still encourage everyone to use Rotary Direct to make your donations and if possible to set up a recurring donation. It is easy and allows you to painlessly spread out your annual giving over time. You can set it up for as little as $10 a month. That a small amount that I doubt you will miss. Plus, if your credit card gives points you get a "twofer", the reward points and the great feeling of having made a difference in the world. Try it. I think you will like it. Final thought from me for May: Remember, the smallest good deed far outweighs the greatest of good intentions. Do a good small good deed today by making a donation to The Rotary Foundation. Thanks! 9 D7610 PHS Membership increases by 15 members There is only one month left in this Rotary year and we encourage all Clubs and District Rotarians to make a final effort to increase membership in the Paul Harris Society. PHS members pledge to contribute $1,000 very year that they are able to the Rotary Foundation. Paul Harris Society contributions to The Rotary Foundation have helped Rotary immunize more than 2.5 billion children worldwide against polio. They have also supported individual projects such as providing clean water and toilets to over 1,000 persons in the Philippines and providing lifesaving neonatal equipment to a hospital in Brazil. Michael Arietti District PHS Chair This month, we were pleased to welcome our newest PHS member, Newsha Nazmi Ansary, of the Leesburg Daybreak Club. During the meeting, Newsha also spoke about her recent experience participating in a marathon in Antarctica! It was quite an adventure. You are the Tops!!!! 10 D7610 Interest Grows in Exposing Human Trafficking Recently, the Bailey s Crossroads Rotary Club (BXCR) held a dinner on April 3, 2018 that served as a forum for multiple community leaders who are knowledgeable about human trafficking, and Ava Nguyen was a keynote speaker on this topic at the District Conference. By one count, there were over seventy-five Rotarians, college-students, guests, and J.E.B. Stuart H.S. Interactors, at the above-mentioned dinner. At the dinner, recent college graduate Sarah Flores Shannon (assisted by Carrie Kramer), introduced the following speakers: Det. John Spata, and Keith Baker of the Fairfax County Police Department-Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Unit and Gang unit; CEO Bill Wolf of Just Ask; Ray Patten of the Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Initiative; Daniel J. Kasmierski, President of the Rotary Club of Springfield; and Meesh Peters a teacher at Poe Middle School (and district vocational training team chair). Det. Spata began by defining Human trafficking and quantifying the crime s widespread occurrences in our local community. Human sex trafficking is compelling someone to work or to engage in a commercial sex act. There is, also, human trafficking for commercial exploitation. In effect, human trafficking has become Northern Virginia s dark secret. It is estimated that there are approximately 10,000 occurrences of human trafficking. What was most revealing at both the dinner and the D7610 District Conference was the de-bunking of various myths that currently surround human trafficking. For example, many still believe that most human trafficking victims are runaways. False. Many even return to their own home at night but remain trapped during the day for various reasons, including coercion and threats. Another myth is that human trafficking does not occur in affluent counties. In fact, in 2016, there were nine cases brought to the attention of local law enforcement, in Fairfax County alone. In 2017, there were fourteen cases, (and, these are only the reported cases). In Fairfax County, human trafficking takes place everywhere in hotels, motels, apartments, houses and even restaurants. At the dinner, The Springfield Rotary Club President, Daniel Kasmierski was asked how he became involved in exposing human trafficking. I joined Rotary because there is a link between my day job and Rotary peace initiatives. I collaborated with West Springfield to further our Communities awareness of human trafficking--through a peace initiative grant to help make [the public] aware and to prevent what has become a growing problem in our community. Daniel was also a speaker at the Fall Peace workshop organized by DRFC and PDG Juanita Cawley. What can Rotary and the public do? A recurring remark amongst the speakers was simply tell the police about suspicious activities. There is now a National Human Trafficking Resource center [hot] line ( ). Clearly, waiting until someone becomes a victim is too late! The average lifespan of a victim is only seven years. Violence soon thereafter becomes a part of the victim s daily life. Many victims lack hope. So, as Rotarians, let s give the victims hope! Page 10 May 2018 In Motion: The Rotary Foundation Newsletter of District 7610
