2 COURSE OVERVIEW EDUCATIONAL NEED AND PROGRAM GOAL Respiratory diseases are a widespread problem in the United States, and asthma is a particularly concerning public health issue. In Texas, approximately 1.4 million adults and 617,000 children have asthma, and it is one of the most frequent reasons for emergency room visits and missed school days among children. To proactively meet the needs of patients in the Coastal Bend, this one-day conference will update health care professionals on asthma management and the newest treatments. The goal of this conference is to prevent and reduce exacerbations, hospitalizations and mortality rates of patients dealing with asthma, IgE-mediated food allergies and interstitial lung disease. TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is designed for physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, pediatricians and other health care professionals. EDUCATIONAL METHODS The format will consist of PowerPoint assisted lectures, each followed by a brief question and answer session. Participants will also take part in pre and post questions facilitated by an audience response system. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Describe the underlining basic pathology that leads to asthma Identify asthma sufferers who are at risk for asthma death Identify the common medications, regardless of age, for management of mild, moderate and severe asthma Review the Simplified Asthma Management program (SAM) Describe the stepped approach for asthma management Describe the most effective asthma preventer therapy available Explain the prevalence and impact of IgE-mediated food allergy Apply current food allergy management and strategies to prevent the development of food allergy Assess whether an educational asthma intervention will improve knowledge, quality of life and health care utilization. Discuss if teaching the principles of Healthy Homes to participants deceases exposure to asthma triggers Discuss the advantages of collaborating with community health workers (promotoras) as workforce for an asthma program Discuss the use of the new biologics in the treatment of severe asthma Discuss pulmonary function testing
