2 Needs Updating practicing physicians and other health professionals in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestional and liver diseases is essential to providing quality care leading to improved patient outcomes. The goal of this activity is to review current, as well as new medical therapies, and to outline the most effective ways to integrate this information in clinical practice. Target Audience and Objectives Gastroenterologists, hepatologists, internists, family physicians, physician assistants, medical trainees, students, nurses. At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to: Identify the different types of reactions to foods, clinical features suggesting a food allergy or intolerance and manage appropriately. Differentiate between the competing theories behind the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in order to provide a better explanation to their patients. Use chromoendoscopy when performing colon cancer surveillance in patients with IBD. Apply the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD) guidelines in treating patients with chronic hepatitis B. Identify patients with Barrett s esophagus who will benefit from endoscopic ablative therapy. Identify the potential side effects of long term proton pump inhibitor use. Identify resources available to community physicians for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Perform the appropriate diagnostic work up for patients with non-cardiac chest pain. Recognize patients in acute liver failure and identify appropriate treatment and referral options. Identify current strategies in the management of patients with portal hypertension, including TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunt) as appropriate. Accreditation/Credit Designation Baylor College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Baylor College of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Your registration will be confirmed. If you have not received confirmation at least five business days before the activity start date, contact the Office of Continuing Medical Education (OCME) immediately. If you plan to register on-site, contact OCME at least 24 hours in advance to confirm activity status and space availability. The OCME reserves the right to limit the number of participants in an activity and will not be responsible for any expenses incurred by an individual whose registration is not confirmed and for whom space is not available. Cancellation/Refund Policy Requests for registration refunds must be in writing and received by the OCME at least 10 business days before the activity begins. The date the request is received by the OCME will be considered the cancellation date. Requests received after the refund deadline will not be processed. Cancellations are subject to a $50 administrative fee deducted from the registration fee paid to cover guarantees and other expenses. Requests should be mailed to the OCME or faxed to The OCME reserves the right to cancel activities, not less than 10 business days before the scheduled date, if extenuating circumstances make it necessary.
