Victor, III, MD 5 Panel Discussion 5:30 Adjournment and Poster Awards PROGRAM OVERVIEW Several new surgical, endoscopic and pharmacological approaches to the management of digestive disorders have become available, yet their exact role in the management of these disorders is unclear. Providers need to recognize the range of therapeutic and diagnostic options that are now available for the management of digestive disorders and their clinical applications. This course will address the challenge of defining the role of new technologies, disease entities and therapies in everyday clinical practice by presenting the latest evidence-based information on diagnostics and therapeutics in digestive disorders. TARGET AUDIENCE Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, residents/fellows, students, and researchers in gastroenterology, GI surgery, colorectal surgery, internal medicine and hepatology will benefit from this course. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to: Counsel patients on the true risks and benefits of proton pump inhibitors Select the optimal treatment strategy for the patient with GERD and the patient with Barrett s esophagus Describe the relative usefulness of the various approaches to colon cancer screening Define risks for surgery in the patient with cirrhosis and develop strategies to minimize them Describe current approaches to the management of pancreatic cancer Choose the best treatment options for patients with irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis Develop a logical approach to the patient with cholestasis and the patient with bile duct obstruction
4 OPTIONAL WORKSHOP n Saturday, March 24, 2018 Hands-on Endolumenal Therapies for Gastroenterologists and Surgeons Advanced Tissue Resection, Ablation, and Hemostasis 8 a.m. Noon Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation & Education (MITIE) Workshop Co-Directors: Brian J. Dunkin, MD, FACS, and Sandeep Lahoti, MD This hands-on course is for practicing physician endoscopists who have experience with basic gastrointestinal (GI) tissue removal and hemostasis techniques and wish to learn more advanced approaches. Tissue resection and ablation techniques will be taught for utilization in both the upper and lower GI tract. Safe use of electrosurgical energy will also be reviewed as well as the use of advanced clips for hemostasis and wound closure. Workshop for third- and fourth-year fellows and practicing physicians only. WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: Demonstrate proper technique for endoscopic mucosal resection using multiple methods. Demonstrate the use of rescue strategies for GI bleeding or perforation following advanced tissue removal in the GI tract. Describe important principles of electrosurgical energy as applied in the GI tract. Discuss technical differences between endoscopic submucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). COURSE DESIGN This is a hands-on tissue explant lab where participants rotate among 45-minute stations to learn and rehearse techniques for advanced GI tissue resection, mucosal ablation, and hemostasis.
