3 Course Director The goal of this educational activity is to review current and new information from the national and international meetings and conferences in the hopes of outlining the most effective ways to use the knowledge attained. In order to close the professional practice gap, the conference will help distinguish the difference between actual and ideal performance and/or patient outcomes. The educational needs that need to be met are the deficits in knowledge, competence and performance that contribute to the professional practice gap. By closing this gap, we hope that competency and strategy will improve each practitioner s ability, improve patient outcomes which include health status, deliver of care and the patient s perceptions, expectations and experience with their practitioner. Institute appropriate management and treatment strategies for patients with a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal diseases based on the information gathered at the 2014 annual meeting of the Digestive Diseases Week (DDW)- the largest annual meeting for gastroenterologists in the world. Understand the management strategies for H. Pylori infection, gastrointestinal bleeding and acid peptic disorders. Manage celiac disease and other problems with diarrhea and mal absorption. Describe the latest advance techniques in imaging of gastrointestinal diseases. Manage patients with inflammatory bowel disease with complications using state-of-the-art knowledge shared at the annual meeting. Diagnose esophageal diseases, including Barrett s esophagus. Analyze objectives of clinical trials, quality of practice, cost effectiveness and outcomes of treatment. Utilize the latest developments in the management of GI cancers. Discuss the mechanisms behind common functional gastrointestinal diseases and intestinal motility problems. This activity is directed towards practicing gastroenterologists, hepatologists, transplant surgeons, general surgeons, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The program format will consist of didactic lectures with ample time for questions and answers and discussions. Handouts will be provided. Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation and possible bias. This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of Texas Medical Association and Texas Gulf Coast Gastroenterological Society. The Texas Medical Association is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates, Inc., An accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. The Texas Medical Association designates this live activity for. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. According to the criteria of the American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses (ABCGN), the hours earned in this activity are considered GI-Specific for purposes of re-certifiction by contact hours through ABCGN.
