Chicago, IL The national RAC program that started in 2010 triggered an avalanche of audits that has been picking up speed ever since. The number of auditing agencies has multiplied and their methods have become more sophisticated and intrusive. This presentation will start with lessons learned from the RAC demonstration project that started it all, show how the themes developed, then continue to plague hospitals and how they can defend themselves against repayment demands. The speaker will review the methods of the various auditing agencies and how they cooperate and use data to identify audit targets. This session will cover a discussion of relative costs and benefits for inpatient admission from observation for the patient, physician, and hospital. The speaker will demonstrate the effect of documenting medical necessity for inpatient admission to include Medicare compliance, provide examples of key words for physician documentation, clinical factors of InterQual criteria, and RAC review.
