Greg Cunningham, MHA CEO American Association Little Rock, AR Session Abstract: Ever wonder why you have chosen a career in case management? This session will explore the reasons professionals like you have chosen case management; the impact on your personal job satisfaction and life; and the need for self assessment. As case management professionals, we are challenged every day with problem resolution it is a role that never ceases and is multi-faceted. Those who are drawn to case management are not satisfied with performing tedious widgetmaking tasks. The role requires an inner drive or passion to apply patient-centered solutions; minimize the stress effect of time-sensitive and emotionally charged issues; negotiate with multiple decision makers; and maintain commitment and energy from one case to the next. Audience responses and personal stories have been collected prior to the session to evaluate commonalities in choices, life impact and the answer to why we remain in this challenging profession. Learning Objectives: 1. Identify the common reasons people choose case management as a career 2. Correlate audience member life experiences and lessons learned to their own 3. Understand why and how peers continue to commit to the challenging roles in case management 4. Assess their intrinsic job satisfaction and their own passion/commitment to being a successful and balanced case management professional Session 2: Observation vs. Inpatient Regulations, Medical Necessity & HINNs Sandra McCune, BSN, RN Utilization Management Specialist Lakeland HealthCare St. Joseph, MI Session Abstract: The session will be a speaker-led discussion of CMS medical necessity guidelines. 3 Sessions 3&4: Medicare Compliance Challenges in the Age of Health Care Accountability Ralph Wuebker, MD Senior Physician Advisor Executive Health Resources Newton Square, PA SESSION ABSTRACT: As part of the larger health care reform program, the federal government has put measures in place to reduce Medicare and Medicaid waste and fraud. As a result, hospitals now face a new era of healthcare audit accountability. This era is full of a variety of program integrity contractor initiatives and a veritable alphabet soup of acronyms. It is essential for hospitals to understand the roles of each group, how to deal with their findings, and when and how to appeal them. In addition, hospitals must be sure to have strong concurrent compliance programs in place to mitigate risk moving forward. This session will focus on current program integrity contractor activity in Illinois and Missouri. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Describe the role of MACs, RACs, PSCs, ZPICs, CERT, MIP, MICs, PERM and MIGs 2. Recognize the individual program integrity contractors findings and how they interrelate 3. Identify the direct hospital and provider impact of current regulatory enforcement initiatives Session 5: Personal Productivity: Control Your Workflow & Take Back Your 8-Hour Day Marvis Meyers Vice President Training and Organizational Development AAIM Employer s Association St. Louis, MO SESSION ABSTRACT: Do you have too much to do? Do you feel overwhelmed by the non-stop flood of s, voice mails, meetings and interruptions? Are you paralyzed by the piles on your desk? Is the stress of dealing with your case management workload winding you tighter and tighter? In this session attendees will learn a new way of thinking about their work and their energy and develop tactics for maximizing effectiveness not the number of hours worked. Attendees will leave the program with a lot of simple, but powerful time-saving tips, and a way to reduce stress. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Recognize all outstanding commitments 2. Identify actions to make progress on commitments 3. Develop techniques to better manage paper, and overall workflow
