4 Part ONE March 6 7, 2018 Part TWO April 25 26, 2018 Topic Descriptions Iowa Health Care Association Orientation This session will walk participants through the many valuable tools and services available to you as an IHCA member, that are provided to help leaders and organizations achieve success. The Leadership Challenge in Long Term Care No matter the size or location of your organization, success depends on your leadership skills. Intelligent leadership decisions and actions can improve staff performance and ensure high quality care. The exceptional leader is a role model, advocate, a good communicator, and guides the creation of systems, processes and programs that align with the facility s mission and vision. This session will focus on tools and strategies to help administrators and DON s become effective and successful leaders. Human Resources Law and Successful Hiring Practices The exceptional leaders in long term care develop strategies to recruit and retain, coach, assure quality education/training, and ensure meaningful work to maximize job satisfaction of the facility's human resources. This session will cover the important aspects of human resource and personnel issues including interviewing, hiring, and performance appraisal techniques. Medication Management and High Risk Drugs The routine use of high risk drugs among the frail elderly population found in today s long term care facilities poses significant medical risk for residents and significant regulatory risk for providers. This session will cover current best practices in the delivery of high risk drugs and proper medication management practices and procedures. Quality Improvement (QAPI, Five Star, QM s, LTC Trend Tracker) CMS will be releasing the long awaited regulations requiring facilities to have a formal QAPI program this year. Successful leaders will need good understanding of public data that is released on your facility, how that will impact your operations and how to use that data in your quality assurance performance improvement programs. This session will give you an overview of QAPI and give insight to what your data reveals about your organization. A bonus will be a short tutorial on using AHCA s LTC Trend Tracker in your QAPI efforts. Communication for the LTC Leader Effective communication skills are essential for healthcare leaders. Clear and accurate documentation is one of the foundations of healthcare and this session emphasizes its importance along with the importance of building effective teams, maintaining productive communication channels among the team members and developing good listening skills. Risk Management Practices in Long Term Care Given the heightened scrutiny of today s LTC profession by regulators and litigators, leaders must be experts at managing risk within their operations. This session will include practical strategies for identifying your areas of potential risk and provide solutions for implementing systems to help avoid regulatory citations and sanctions as well as civil claims.
5 Nursing Facility Survey Process This session will give participants a first-hand account of Iowa s nursing facility survey process. The session will cover best practices for the leaders instituting pro-active strategies to meet and exceed state and federal standards to assure meeting of ongoing compliance standards and high standards of care. Understanding the Role of MDS/RAI on Facility Operations The collection of accurate and valid MDS data for your residents must be a high priority for nursing facility leaders. This session will help participants understand the role the MDS plays in reimbursement, care planning, quality improvement data collection and benchmarking and the necessary documentation required to support MDS coding. Current Reimbursement Systems and Future Trends More than half of Iowa s nursing facility residents have their nursing facility stay covered by Medicare or Medicaid. The rapid transition of these traditionally fee- for-service programs into managed care models will require administrators and DON s to evaluate the delivery of care and the management of resources in different ways. This session will help you understand how to navigate today s current reimbursement environment and what to expect in the future. Regulatory Review and Corporate Compliance in LTC The world of regulatory and corporate compliance in long term care has never been more difficult or challenging to manage as it is today. New interpretations by CMS, DIA, OIG, and other federal and state regulatory entities seem to emerge almost weekly. This session will help you understand current regulatory trends and issues and the CMS requirements for a formal corporate compliance plan. NURSE TRACK Nursing Law within Long Term Care Directors of Nurses and nurse leaders must have a working knowledge of the regulations governing nurse practice in Iowa. This session will provide an overview of the applicable nursing laws including the Iowa Nurse Practice Act, regulations from IAC Chapters 58 and 81, other state and federal nursing and unlicensed staff regulations essential for the nurse leader s success in a long term care facility. Infection Prevention and Control New regulations planned by CMS will require that LTC facilities have increased infection control surveillance and analysis activities and antibiotic stewardship activities in the very near future. The emphasis on preventing hospital admissions now also demands that providers are vigilant about infection control protocols. This session will help the nurse leader understand current and future infection control requirements and provide guidance to best practices for the implementation of a comprehensive infection control program. ADMINISTRATOR TRACK Advocacy and the Media What are effective ways to educate your elected officials about the challenges providers face? What do you do when faced with a TV camera crew after having a negative outcome in your facility? How do you deal with social media? This session will help leaders develop effective strategies to create a positive market presence and effective relationships with elected officials and understand how to deal with the challenge of unwanted media attention. Financial Management (AR, Cash Flow, Rate Setting, Working with your Board/Management) Administrators are responsible for the financial health of their operations. This session will help you understand some basic financial management principles and management strategies needed for success in today s complex health care environment.
