2 1 Resident Assistant Psitin Descriptin Department f Residence Life General Descriptin f Psitin The Resident Assistant (RA) is a paraprfessinal (r a student staff member), a University leadership psitin, and a persnal develpment pprtunity. Successful candidates assume all three rles with a cmmitment f persnal integrity, scial skills, and time. RAs must psitively represent the University and be excellent rle mdels; apply gd planning, leadership, cmmunicatin, and helping skills; and, priritize the RA psitin just as they wuld any ther wrk experience. RAs are supervised by a full-time, prfessinal, live-in Area Crdinatr (AC). Each RA lives n a flr/wing f apprximately students and is respnsible t that flr/wing t help develp cmmunity. RAs fulfill this respnsibility by building genuine, caring relatinships with ther students; creating activities that fster interactin amng students; and helping students t understand the impact their chices/behavirs have n the cmmunity. Essential Functins and Majr Respnsibilities Cmmunity Develpment and Leadership Be regularly available and accessible t students in the residence hall. Develp rapprt with residents, such as knwing each by name, thrugh demnstrating respect, psitive regard, and fairness twards all residents. Cnduct cmmunity meetings as needed r as directed by supervisr t disseminate infrmatin, plan cmmunity activities, r reslve disputes. Knw and adhere t all University plicies, especially thse pertaining t Husing and Residence Life. Educate students abut the impact their chices have n themselves and cmmunity members. Encurage students t assume respnsibility fr their chices, and t help hld each ther accuntable. Plan scial and educatinal events fr assigned flr/wing as required in the prgramming mdel r as directed by yur AC. Invlve residents in the planning f such activities when apprpriate. Create infrmatinal r educatinal bulletin bards, dr decratins, and signs that fster a sense f cmmunity. Encurage and prmte resident participatin in residential gvernment leadership pprtunities, including hall cuncils and Residence Husing Assciatin (RHA). Supprt these rganizatins with yur attendance and cllabratin. Mediate cnflicts between residents using cnflict reslutin skills. Encurage residents t accept and value individual differences and respect the rights and pinins f all residents in their cmmunity. Meet with residents as directed by yur AC. Peer Mentr, Helper, and Educatr Rle mdel ethical and successful behavirs fr cllege life by exercising sund time management and decisin-making. Assist students with persnal, scial, and academic cncerns using listening and helping skills Knw available campus and cmmunity resurces available t students. Refer students t these services as apprpriate r facilitate the delivery f these services if needed. Residence Hall Management and Administratin Share respnsibility with ther staff t prvide in-hall, n-duty cverage, including evenings, weekends, hlidays and breaks when halls are pen. When n duty, cnduct runds and fllw established n-duty prtcls. Share respnsibility with ther staff t perate the hall frnt desk t check ut equipment, cmplete maintenance requests, and be available t students. Identify and respnd t suspected vilatins f University plicies; facilitate reslutins that create cmpliance with the plicies; and, prepare accurate, timely, written dcumentatin fr yur AC. Participate in ne r mre assigned areas f extra respnsibility, including but nt limited t the recruitment and selectin f the fllwing year s paraprfessinal staff, prgramming, marketing, Hall Cuncil advising, liaise t Residence Hall Assciatin, department celebratins and recgnitin Participate in the evaluatin/assessment prcesses fr the Departments f Husing and Residence Life. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualificatins Be enrlled as a full-time (12+ credits), degree-seeking student f sphmre status r higher at Pacific University while emplyed. Be at least 18 years f age at time f emplyment. Maintain a current and cumulative GPA f 2.5 while emplyed. Be able t cmmit t the psitin fr the rest f the academic year. Have lived at least ne semester in a residence hall r similar cmmunity-living facility, r have demnstrated significant leadership experience. Remain in gd standing with the University (in regards t finances, academics, and cnduct). Cmpensatin RAs receive remissin fr rm and bard csts in the residence hall while emplyed. In additin, RAs receive a mnthly stipend during the academic year cntract perid. Due t federal regulatins, remissin fr rm and bard is cnsidered financial aid and listed n award letters. This may impact the amunt f financial aid that an RA receives frm ther surces (such as Wrk Study). Applicants are encuraged t cntact the Financial Aid Office t investigate this pssibility if it is a cncern. 7 DRAFT Resident Assistant Staff Agreement Pacific University Department f Residence Life Subject t change In cnsideratin f my emplyment in the psitin f Resident Assistant, I,, hereafter referred t as I, me, r my, hereby enter int the fllwing Agreement with Pacific University, hereafter referred t as the University. Terms and Definitins The fllwing terms and definitins are used in this agreement: Outside cmmitment refers t a regular, repeated, r standing bligatin r duty t a grup r an rganizatin. This definitin includes additinal jbs, self-emplyment, cllegiate athletics r an athletic league, leadership psitins, regular vlunteer wrk, service t cmmittees r bards, membership in University r cmmunity clubs and rganizatins, and plays r ther ensemble perfrmances. Residence Life prfessinal staff refers t all full-time University staff emplyed within the Residence Life department, including the Directrs f Husing r Residence Life, Area Crdinatrs r their University-appinted designees. Nature f Emplyment and Terminatin 1. I have read the psitin descriptin fr my jb title and shall fulfill all duties and respnsibilities specified therein. I agree that if I fail t fulfill the duties and respnsibilities f my jb, r fail t fulfill the terms and cnditins f this Agreement, the University may take crrective jb actin, up t and including terminatin f my emplyment. 2. I am an at-will emplyee and I r the University may terminate my emplyment at any time. The maximum pssible duratin f my emplyment under the terms and cnditins f this Agreement shall begin at 5:00 p.m., Sunday August 7, 2016 and expire at 5:00 p.m., Mnday, May 22, I agree that nthing in this Agreement, including the afrementined dates, shall cnstitute r be cnstrued as a cntract by the University t emply me fr a specific perid f time. The actual duratin f my emplyment within these dates may vary subject t the terms and cnditins f this Agreement. This Agreement shall nt create any bligatin by the University t reemply me in the future. I understand that this Agreement des nt vid r replace my husing cntract. 3. If my emplyment is terminated fr any reasn, my cmpensatin shall als cease n the date my emplyment is terminated. My cmpensatin shall be prrated based n the date my emplyment is terminated. I understand that my husing cntract is still valid and I shall be respnsible fr payment f any rm and bard charges fr the remainder f the husing cntract perid. I understand that I shall be required t mve t anther residence hall rm. Cmpensatin 4. In cnsideratin f my fulfilling all terms and cnditins f this Agreement fr the maximum pssible duratin f my emplyment, the University shall cmpensate me as prvided herein fr my specified jb title. Resident Assistant staff members receive while emplyed, full remissin fr residence hall rm and bard charges fr the rm and meal plan chsen by the University. Rm and bard charges are the nly charges eligible fr remissin; damage charges, fines, and ther fees are excluded and shall remain my respnsibility. Resident Assistants are als cmpensated with a $75.00 per mnth stipend paid thrughut the nine mnths f the academic calendar. Pre-Emplyment Cnditins 5. I understand that my University academic and disciplinary recrds were cnsidered as a cnditin f ffering me emplyment. Therefre, I agree that Sectin 12 (GPA Requirement) and Sectin 15 (Persnal Behavir) shall be effective and binding n the date I sign this Agreement. I understand that, prir t the fficial start f my emplyment, if I fail t adhere t thse sectins, my emplyment ffer may be rescinded. If I am a current staff member, I understand that psitin ffer will be cntingent upn favrable evaluatins between nw and the fficial start date f this upcming emplyment perid. I shall depart fr winter break n earlier than 5:00 p.m. n Friday, December 16, 2016, s that I may assist in clsing the residence halls. I recgnize that, if I remain in my husing space ver winter break, I will be respnsible fr fulfilling RA jb duties, as determined by the Residence Life department. d. I shall return t campus fr Winter Term n later than 5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 8, 2017 fr Winter Term. I shall attend Mid-Year RA Training Thursday, January 26-Sunday, January 29, I shall btain advance apprval frm my AC befre cmmitting t smething (such as a Winter Term travel curse) that wuld prhibit me frm perfrming my duties r participating in training requirements. e. I shall depart fr summer n earlier than Mnday, May 22, 2017 at 5:00 p.m., s that I may assist in clsing the residence halls. f. I agree t discuss my departure frm and return t campus fr all ther University break perids with my AC. I understand that resident assistants share respnsibility fr prviding n-call cverage during University break perids. Residence Life Team Time 7. I understand that I am required t attend the weekly Residence Life Team Times every Thursday frm 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. during the Fall and Spring academic terms, pending the academic schedule; Winter Term Team Time will be scheduled in December, I agree t nt schedule class, wrk r any ther cmmitments during this time frame. Rm and Flr/Wing Assignment 8. I understand that I may be reassigned t anther rm, residence hall, supervisr, r staff, if deemed necessary at the discretin f the University. Time Away Frm Campus 9. I agree that ne f my duties is t be available and accessible t students in the residence hall, including living and sleeping in my residence hall rm. I agree t maintain n average, a standard f sleeping in my residence hall rm fur ut f five nights per wrkweek and ne ut f tw nights per weekend. I understand that failure t maintain this standard n average may result in perceived unavailability r pr cmmunity develpment, which may require crrective jb actin. 10. I agree that extended absences may als adversely affect my ability t maintain a presence in my cmmunity and supprt my c-wrkers wh are n duty. Therefre, I shall ntify my AC anytime that I will be away frm my residence hall fr a perid greater than 24 hurs r will spend the night utside the Prtland metr area. I understand that if I fail t ntify my AC, I may be subject t crrective jb actin. If my AC determines that there are already t many staff members away frm the hall fr that time, I shall freg my departure. I shall btain apprval frm my supervisr and the Directr f Residence Life befre enrlling fr verlad hurs, which are defined as greater than 18 hurs fr undergraduates. I shall ntify my AC f any ther increases r decreases in my number f enrlled hurs. I understand that if I fail t maintain full-time status at Pacific University my emplyment may be terminated. 12. As a Resident Assistant, I shall maintain a 2.50 cumulative and semester GPA. I understand that if I fail t attain at least a 2.50 semester GPA, my emplyment may be terminated. I understand that if I fail t maintain the required GPA in a given semester, I may be subject t crrective jb actin, including further limiting r eliminating utside cmmitments r develping an academic wrk plan in cnsultatin with my AC. Outside Cmmitments 13. Understanding that my wrk respnsibilities fr the Department f Residence Life take precedence, I shall limit my utside cmmitments t n mre than 15 hurs per week, f which I shall spend n mre than 10 in ther paid jbs r self-emplyment. I agree that any exceptin t these utside cmmitment limits must be apprved in advance, in writing, by my supervisr and the Directr f Residence Life. 14. I shall cmplete an Outside Cmmitment List with my AC. Once this list has been cmpleted and signed, I shall btain my AC s explicit permissin befre assuming any additinal utside cmmitments. I shall ntify my AC f any ther change in my utside cmmitments. Persnal Behavir 15. I understand that ne f my duties is t rle mdel ethical and successful behavirs fr cllege life, including fllwing all University plicies. I further understand that my persnal behavir may adversely affect my psitin as a rle mdel and my perceived credibility r real ability t perfrm the duties f my jb. I shall adhere t all University plicies, including thse cntained in the husing cntract and residence hall handbk. I understand that if my supervisr r the Directr f Residence Life determines that I have vilated any University plicy, I may be subject t crrective jb actin, up t and including terminatin. I understand that such determinatin and subsequent crrective actin may ccur at the ptin f the University in advance f, cncurrent t, subsequent t, in additin t, separate frm, r in absence f any University disciplinary r judicial hearings r sanctins regarding the same matter. I understand that bth my ff-campus and n-campus behavir are equally subject t the cnditins f this clause when my behavir is in vilatin f University plicy r federal, state, r lcal law. Cnfidentiality and Required Reprting 16. I shall fllw all University plicies fr cmpliance with the Family Educatinal Rights and Privacy Act f 1974 (FERPA). I understand that I may be privy, either by my psitin r by direct revelatin frm students, t sensitive persnal infrmatin.
