2 Course Information Overview Among the reasons for evaluating and treating feeding and eating problems in children is the adverse impact of untreated feeding difficulties on nutrition and health. Nutritional outcomes can be considered on a continuum, ranging from mild to severe malnutrition, from underweight status to obesity, in infancy through adolescence. Children with undernutrition present with poor weight gain and linear growth and may experience negative effects on their cognitive development. Children with obesity are at greater risk for cardiovascular problems, type 2 diabetes, asthma and orthopedic problems. Nutrition problems across the continuum have an adverse impact on emotional and behavioral regulation, quality of life, peer relations, and self-esteem. Caregivers of these children experience increased stress, and costs to families and the healthcare system at large are great. Effective assessment and treatment for the spectrum of feeding problems are ideally interdisciplinary in nature, due to the complex interplay between physical health and behavior. Care teams may include physicians, nurse practitioners, dietitians, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, physical therapists and psychologists. The purpose of this conference is to highlight interdisciplinary assessment and intervention approaches targeting maladaptive eating behavior and, ultimately, pediatric health and nutrition. Target Audience Healthcare providers including primary care providers, developmental pediatricians, neonatologists, gastroenterologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, dietitians, social workers, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and community and school therapists. Objectives Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 1. Discuss the continuum of childhood nutrition disorders 2. Describe the adverse impact of untreated nutrition disorders on health, development and psychosocial outcomes 3. Identify current evidence-based interventions in the field of feeding General Information The conference will be held in the Ruth and Tristram Colket, Jr. Translational Research Building at The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. Registration fee includes course materials, continental breakfast, breaks, lunch and parking on campus. Preregistration is required, and the registration deadline is Friday, March 25, Payment must accompany registration form for it to be processed. AMA Credit Designation Statement The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Nursing Accreditation Statement The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation.

3 Speech-Language Pathology This program is offered for.60 CEUs, advanced level, professional area. Instructional personnel disclosures, financial and nonfinancial, can be found at Dietitians The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Registered Dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) will receive 6 continuing professional education units (CPEUs) for completion of this course. Application submitted and pending approval. Social Work The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia is a preapproved provider of continuing education credits for Pennsylvania Licensed Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors. Participants licensed in Pennsylvania who attend the full workshop and complete the required evaluation are eligible for six Continuing Education Credits. Participants licensed in other states should check with local licensing boards to determine continuing education approval. This course will offer 6 CEUs. Occupational Therapy The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia is an approved provider of continuing education by the American Occupational Therapy Association Inc. Six contact hours or.6 AOTA CEUs will be awarded to participants at the completion of the program. Assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products or clinical procedures by AOTA. Approved Provider Number: Psychology The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Hotel Accommodations A block of rooms has been reserved at reduced rates at the Sheraton Philadelphia University City Hotel, located within walking distance of Children s Hospital. The group rate is $172 single and double occupancy plus a room tax. Cancellation and Refund Policy The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course due to any unforeseen circumstances. In the event of cancellation or postponement, Children s Hospital will refund any registration fees, less a service charge, but is not responsible for any related costs, charges or expenses to participants, including cancellation charges assessed by airlines/travel agencies.
