3 RESPIRATORY THERAPY PROGRAM Prgram Length and Degree Awarded The Tidewater Cmmunity Cllege Assciate f Applied Science in Respiratry Therapy is six semesters in length and cnsists f 67 credit hurs: This curriculum is designed t prepare students fr emplyment as respiratry therapist upn graduatin, certificatin and licensure. The Respiratry Therapy curriculum can be reviewed in ttal at the fllwing web link: Essential Functins f the Respiratry Therapy Student T successfully cmplete the clinical cmpnent f the RT prgram, the student must be able t perfrm all f the essential functins f a Respiratry Therapist. Students shuld pssess and be able t demnstrate the fllwing: 1. Manual Dexterity: Bilateral use f hands r terminal devices that invlves crdinatin and strength. 2. Sufficient grss and fine mtr crdinatin t manipulate equipment and accessries, lift a minimum f 50 punds, and t stp, bend, r prmptly assist patients wh becme unstable. 3. Obtains, assembles, calibrates, and checks necessary equipment. Uses prblem slving t identify and crrect malfunctins f respiratry care equipment. Demnstrates apprpriate interpersnal skill t wrk prductively with patients, families, staff and c-wrkers. Accepts directives, maintains cnfidentiality, des nt discriminate, and uphlds the ethical standards f the prfessin. Admissin Requirements Admissin t Tidewater Cmmunity Cllege des nt autmatically qualify a student fr admissin t the Respiratry Therapy Prgram. Students must cmply with all General Admissin Requirements fr Divisin f Health Prfessins Prgrams. In additin t meeting the admissins requirements fr TCC and the Divisin f Health Prfessins prgrams, students must meet the fllwing specific requirements t be admitted t the Respiratry Therapy Prgram. Students must: 1. Must be at least 18 years f age 2. Be a high schl graduate r have a GED. 3. Cmpete High Schl Chemistry r Chemistry (CHM) I 4. Meet current requirements fr admissin t TCC. 5. Attend a Respiratry Therapy Open Huse Infrmatin Sessin prir t admissin. 6. Submit a cmpleted Health Prfessins Prgram Applicatin indicating that yu are applying fr the Respiratry Therapy Prgram. 7. Cmplete MTE 1-5 r MTE 45 r place int MTE 6 8. Cmplete the fllwing prerequisite curses with a grade f C r better: Bilgy (BIO) 141 Anatmy and Physilgy I, English (ENG) 111 Cllege Cmpsitin and Student Develpment (SDV) 101 Orientatin t Health Care. 9. Ensure that transcripts frm all ther clleges attended are n file at TCC prir t prgram applicatin deadline date. These transfer credits must be evaluated befre any transfer credit is granted. The applicatin deadline is January 15 fr May admissin. Admissin will be n a cmpetitive placement basis f fully qualified candidates. Students may require develpmental studies, which must be cmpleted befre they are cnsidered fr admissin t the prgram. 5

6 Since the number f applicants t the prgram usually exceeds the maximum enrllment capacity f the prgram, students will be selected n a cmpetitive basis. The scring criteria t be applied during cmpetitive applicant review are defined in Table 1 which fllws. In the event that tw r mre students have a tied cmpetitive placement scre, the grade pint average (GPA) will be used t break the tie. 7 Once Prvisinally Accepted: 1. As a student in the Respiratry Therapy Prgram, the student must cmplete apprximately 600 r mre hurs f clinical training in a hspital r health care facility. The student must pssess the physical ability t aide in the lifting and mving f patients; t pull/push and cntrl the mvement f machinery, i.e., ventilatrs and xygen cylinders; t view digital displays and mnitr scillscpe readuts; t hear audible alarms; t auscultate bld pressure and heart and lung sunds; t perfrm tasks requiring fine mtr cntrl, and t interact effectively with patients and the health care team. All student must cmplete an in-depth physical prir t beginning their clinical activities. A physician must deem an applicant as pssessing the physical attributes ne needs t perfrm the tasks f a respiratry therapist prir t beginning the clinical cmpnent f the prgram. If there is any dubt that yu wuld nt meet the guidelines, please cmplete the physical prir t beginning the prgram. 2. Submit a satisfactry health status as certified by submissin f a cmpleted Health Prfessins Physical Examinatin frm signed by a licensed health care prvider within the last 12 mnths. The frm is available in the Divisin f Health Prfessins Administrative Office and nline at 3. Submit Immunizatin Testing recrd - Health Prfessins students must cmply with bth Virginia law and clinical facility requirements related t immunizatins. Health care prfessins pse inherent health and safety risks. All health prfessin students are required t be cmpliant with Virginia laws related t immunizatins fr the prtectin f themselves and patients. 4. Submit dcumentatin f a negative tw-step TB test r, if a previus psitive TB test was btained, recrd f a negative chest X-ray. 5. The prgram requires a green checked criminal backgrund frm Castlebranch prir t being admitted t the prgram. If the student s criminal backgrund is nt acceptable ( red checked ) r the criminal backgrund check is nt back the week prir t the first day f the summer semester, the ffer fr admissin will be rescinded and the student will be remved frm the RTH classes, if they have already registered, and their curriculum will be changed t General Studies. Castlebranch recmmends submitting the applicatin at least six-weeks in in advance, t be sure it will be cmpleted befre the start f the prgram. Attached is a handut which utlines the directins fr cmpleting this requirement. The backgrund check is $46 and the Respiratry Therapy package cde is id05. A link t the website can be fund at: Criminal Backgrund checks are typically gd fr 1 year and the clinical sites requiring the backgrund check must be attended during that time. Sme students may need t cmplete a secnd backgrund check during the secnd year f the prgram since they are nly valid fr ne year. In general, students with a felny cnvictin will shw a red checked backgrund check and will nt be allwed admittance t the prgram. 6. Maintain a C grade pint average r better t remain in gd standing. Students wh earn any grade belw a C in any first-year summer semester RTH class will nt be able t cntinue in the prgram and will be required t re-apply fr the next year s class. After the first summer semester, any students wh earns any grade belw a C will meet with the prgram directr. Depending upn the circumstances the students may need t re-apply fr the next year r cmplete a remediatin plan. 7

This is mandatry. 5. Take the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) in English and Math, if required. It is recmmended yu take them as sn as pssible t allw adequate time t cmplete required develpmental curses prir t taking any RTH curses. 9 RESPIRATORY THERAPY: Frequently Asked Questins What is Respiratry Therapy? Respiratry Therapy is ne f many allied health prfessins. The prfessin develped ut f needs f critical and rehabilitative heart and lung patients f the early 1940 s. Respiratry care practitiners wrk as members f the critical care team in treating individuals wh are seriusly ill. Using sphisticated medical equipment, they help peple with such lung disrders as asthma, emphysema, pneumnia, and brnchitis. This may include using equipment that will mechanically breathe fr the patient. Can I specialize in Respiratry care? Yes, there are specialty psitins in pediatric care, newbrn care, pulmnary rehabilitatin, hme care, pulmnary functin diagnstics, exercise stress testing, and adult critical care. Respiratry Therapists can als specialize in teaching and management psitins. What credentials can I receive upn graduatin? Students cmpleting the AAS prgram are qualified t take the Therapist Multiple-Chice Exam and upn successful cmpletin, the Clinical simulatin Exam ffered by the NBRC. There are tw established cut scres fr the Therapist Multiple-Chice Examinatin. Candidates may becme eligible t take the Clinical Simulatin Examinatin by achieving the higher cut scre n the Therapist Multiple-Chice Examinatin. After passing bth f these exams yu are a Registered Respiratry Therapist (RRT). What is required fr admissin t the prgram? What can I d if I d nt meet the minimum requirements fr admissin, r I feel it has been t lng since cmpleting the required Math and Science curses? These curses will prvide students with the necessary knwledge t succeed in the prgram. Develpmental Math, English, Bilgy and Chemistry are ffered at varius times bth day and night. Bilgy 141 curses are ffered each semester. Just a reminder that Natural Science (NAS) 2 Fundatins f Life Science is a pre-requisite t BIO 141. When is it necessary t take the Math and English placement tests? All students wh are nt therwise exempt must take the Virginia Placement Test (VPT). It is recmmended that these tests be taken as early as pssible s that if develpmental wrk is necessary, a student can cmplete it prir t the start f the prgram. 10 Are there jbs available? Since the prgram s inceptin in 1975, mst graduates have accepted psitins immediately upn graduatin. The future cntinues t be very bright fr emplyment in Respiratry Therapy. The number and types f emplyers actively seeking qualified respiratry care practitiners have increased cnsiderably. Tday s practitiner may wrk in large and technlgically advanced critical care units, perfrm in small rural hspitals, wrk fr a private physician r act as independent prviders in hme care. The prjected number f jbs is far in excess f the prjected number f graduates expected ver the next several years. Entry-level salaries shuld cntinue t increase ver the next few years at r abve thse f ther allied health ccupatins. Jb utlk is faster than average-u.s. Bureau f Labr Is there a fur-year degree in RT? Yes, many clleges acrss the cuntry ffer B.S. degrees in Respiratry Therapy. Anther ptin is t transfer t a fur-year institutin upn cmpletin f yur TCC assciate degree. Under the cllege s transfer agreements, TCC respiratry therapy graduates can transfer as junirs int health prgrams at Old Dminin University, the University f Virginia and Virginia Wesleyan Cllege. Based n the Bureau f Labr Statistics, a Respiratry Therapist can expect t make apprximately $56, 740. Average salary in 2014 ~ $28.12/hur U.S. Bureau f Labr Are all classes ffered nly during the day? Respiratry Therapy classes are nly ffered at the Virginia Beach Campus f TCC during the day (identified by the prefix letters RTH). Yu may take all nn-respiratry Therapy curses in the curriculum (except HLT 155) either during the day r evening at any TCC campus. Must curses be taken in the rder they appear n the curriculum? Yu must take all Respiratry Therapy curses in the rder in which they appear in the curriculum. Each curse prepares yu fr the next curse, and each is ffered nly nce a year. Yu may take any nn-respiratry curse during the semester it appears in the curriculum r befre that semester. It is recmmended that nn-respiratry Therapy curses be taken prir entry int the prgram t lighten student lad. Hw many hurs a week will I be in class? Yu will attend class an average f 26 hurs a week during the prgram. Of curse, if yu have already cmpleted any required curse wrk yu will attend class fewer hurs. I d nt believe I can handle s many credit hurs every semester. What curses can I take befre I enter the therapist prgram? Any curse that is nt a Respiratry Therapy curse (RTH prefix except HLT 155) can be taken befre yu are accepted int the prgram. Yu can cmplete curses such as BIO 141 and 142, ENG 111, SDV 101 as well as yur scial science and humanities electives befre 10
