2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Statement ESC's mission is to enhance the overall impact of the nonprofit community by enabling organizations to operate more effectively to meet the needs of their constituencies. ESC accomplishes this through the provision of high-quality, high-impact, affordable management consulting and related services by senior level executives and professionals from the private, nonprofit, and public sectors who donate their time and expertise. Diversity and Inclusion ESC is dedicated to promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion where differences are recognized, understood, and appreciated in ways that enable each constituency to create a positive impact within the communities we serve. Background Statement ESC s mission is to enhance the overall impact of the nonprofit community by enabling organizations to operate more effectively to meet the needs of their constituencies. ESC accomplishes this mission by providing management consulting and capacity-building services exclusively to nonprofits throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Since our inception 33 years ago, ESC consultants, volunteer professionals who donate their time, knowledge, and expertise to the betterment of their communities, have assisted 2, local nonprofits with the creation and implementation of successful strategies for immediate and long-term sustainability, and enhanced impact. ESC conducts approximately 1 consulting engagements each year, with nearly half of our clients asking ESC for a follow on project. In the past three years, 94% of the organizations we worked with believed that the services rendered would produce immediate and sustainable impact. The cornerstone of ESC s success rests with its consultants, an impressive cadre of professionals from the private, nonprofit and public sectors who donated nearly 14, hours of their time last year to area nonprofits. These experienced senior level executives combine expertise, skill, passion for excellence and strong desire to serve the community with rigorous professional development to deliver cutting-edge consulting services to ESC s clients. Our unique team approach to consulting allows us to offer our clients a team of 2-4 consultants whose combined skills and sector experience closely match their needs. In addition, the project team has access to all of ESC s consultants as resources to be utilized on the project as needed. Encore Fellows (a national program, operated regionally by ESC) provide nonprofits with a new source of talent for high impact project work or undertaking a role in a functional area or as interim executive. They provide a minimum of 1 hours of service in a year to a single nonprofit for an affordable stipend. Boston-based and primarily serving the Greater Boston area, ESC maintains a four-tiered structure comprised of a Board of Directors, an Advisory Board, volunteers and staff all of whom play a critical role in planning and development. 2
3 Impact Statement Accomplishments - Provided management consulting services to 1 nonprofits - Facilitated practical workshops on timely topics for over 1, nonprofit leaders - Engaged 16 Volunteer Consultants who provided nearly 14, hours of services to strengthening the nonprofit community through the delivery of capacity-building services Goals - Greater diversity in our consultant pool - Expansion of consulting services to reach more nonprofits - Enhance ESC's internal and external professional development programs Needs Statement ESC has four areas of need: financial donations, highly skilled volunteers to serve as Consultants, Workshop Presenters, ESC Board Members; post-primary career professionals who want to transition to high impact-nonprofit work as Encore Fellows; and referrals of ESC s services to the benefit of other nonprofits. ESC consultants are volunteers. Contributions to ESC sustain the proper support system: recruitment, professional development, oversight and evaluation, leveraging the skills and expertise of more than15 volunteers to provide expert guidance to 1 agencies and practical workshops to 1, nonprofit leaders each year. A donation to ESC has a multiplied impact: helping to sustain our capacity-building and management consulting infrastructure (volunteer recruitment, training, placement and oversight) that assists nonprofits to become more effective in service delivery to countless individuals and families, often those most in need in our communities, who are the ultimate beneficiaries of our work. There are several ways to serve the nonprofit sector through ESC: as a skilled, experienced professional in an Encore Fellowship or nonprofit Consulting engagement; tell a nonprofit about ESC s programs and services; and/or make a donation. ESC welcomes your inquiry about our work creating sustainable impact for nonprofits and making an important difference in the quality of life in our communities. 3
4 CEO/Executive Director Statement ESC of New England is a charitable nonprofit management consulting organization that offers its high quality and affordable services exclusively to other nonprofits though a unique business model: executives and professionals with senior level experience who donate their time, knowledge, and expertise for the betterment of their communities. ESC has the resources to provide the overall skill enhancement and additional in-depth individual guidance so-needed by nonprofits as leaders confront the increased demand for services and diminishing resources that have been the product of these difficult economic times. ESC s volunteer consultants bring knowledge, experience, passion and compassion to every consulting engagement. Nearly 7% of ESC s consultants have been volunteering with our organization for five years, and 2% have been with ESC for more than 1 years a testament to both the commitment of the professionals who volunteer with us, and the rewarding experience ESC provides including a comprehensive ongoing peer based professional development programs. In addition to consulting, ESC offers practical workshops on a variety of timely topics to executive directors and senior staff, and provided more than 1, nonprofit leaders with best from attending these workshops in the past year. This past year ESC significantly expanded into the encore arena: becoming the exclusive regional operator of the national Encore Fellowships Program and incorporating as a new program Discovering What s Next (DWN) providing programs and resources to post primary career professionals exploring engagement in the social sector. ESC became the fiscal sponsor for Encore Boston Network, and ESC s CEO joined its Board. An investment in ESC is an investment towards meeting the needs of nonprofits, and an important investment in helping those who are among the neediest in our local communities, who are the ultimate beneficiaries. Board Chair Statement I have been with ESC since 23, both as a volunteer consultant and now as also its board chair. I believe firmly in the mission of the organization and, as a volunteer consultant, have been gratified to work with nonprofits that are deeply committed to helping those whom they serve in the best way possible, despite limited resources. I have seen first hand the difference that our caring, competent, experienced, and knowledgeable volunteer consultants have made. I have led teams of volunteer consultants in strategic planning projects for agencies focused on human services, historic preservation, human rights, and environment quality. I am pleased to be able to continue to use my professional expertise as the former Chief Operating Officer for a major international energy consulting and engineering firm to help the nonprofit community.
