Statements Mission Leadership Oklahoma City develops leaders for volunteer service, including service to nonprofits, the public sector, and other organizations such as schools and faith networks. Background Leadership Oklahoma City develops leaders for community service through education, connections, and service. 2 adult programs and 3 high school programs involve over 200 adults and youth in 8 to 10 month-long series of classes that educate the participants about the community and the skills needed to affect the community, connect participants with people from many backgrounds, perspectives, and interests, and give participants the opportunity to work in a community project. Impact 2014 More than 100 adults and 100 high school students completed one of Leadership Oklahoma City's programs designed to create more effective and engaged volunteers. 1.8 significant, short-term community projects were completed by the LOYAL class of young adults 2. The Youth in Action class raised over $17,000 to support its chosen community project for domestic violence prevention and care for victims. $9,500 was given to three community organizations in recognition of outstanding volunteers Needs All Leadership Oklahoma City's youth programming is free to participants. One of our goals is to bring together young people from as broad a range as possible, and keeping the programs tuition-free means that socioeconomic status is not a factor. We even provide transportation to and from sessions, as well as meals, uniform shirts, and all supplies. Underwriting for the YLX programs is a major funding need. CEO/Executive Director Statement Leadership Oklahoma City brings together as diverse a group of individuals as any community program we know and creates connections among them that are often lifelong. Their focus on improving their communities has resulted in significant positive change in hundreds of organizations. 5 Youth in Action Description Up to 48 high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors spend a day a month, October through April, learning advanced community leadership skills. The learning experiences are based on real community issues, culminating in the selection, by the class, of a specific issue they want to address. They then look for organizations in the community working in their chosen issue, select one project to support, and raise money for that project. Last year's group raised more than $22,000 to address mental health issues in teens via the St. Anthony Foundation and rthcare. Budget $18, Category Philanthropy, Voluntarism & Grantmaking, General/Other Voluntarism Promotion Strategy Population Served Adolescents Only (13-19 years) Adolescents Only (13-19 years) Adolescents Only (13-19 years) Program Short-term Success Program Long-term Success Program Success Monitoring Examples of Program Success Disaster Programs Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) Member Comments on Programs CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments Leadership Oklahoma City receives many more applications for its programs than it can admit; last year's LOYAL program applications topped 200 submissions for 64 spaces. While we are pleased that our programming continues to be attractive to community members, we are dismayed that we cannot serve everyone who would like to participate. Unfortunately, we do not believe we can maintain the high quality of our programming if we increase class sizes and number, so we do not anticipate change in this challenge. 12 Comments on Board & Governance CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments Leadership Oklahoma City's primary challenge is the demand for its programs. All programs, youth and adult, have 2 to 3 times more applications than LOKC has spots available. Increasing the number of places in the programs would require a huge jump in funding, additional staff, and many more volunteers. We believe we serve our participants well, and would not want to see the quality of our programming drop by stretching resources too thinly.
