2 Dear DVUSD Community, The Deer Valley Unified School District Community Education Department is committed to providing opportunities for local citizens and different organizations to become active partners in delivering high quality educational, cultural and recreational enrichment to our community. Our programs and activities are planned to serve the needs of all age groups from preschoolers to adults. Services and programs include: preschool; before and after school child care; enrichment classes; summer camps/ programs; drivers education; early entry testing; family resource center; and facility and field rentals. In our efforts to maintain high expectations and to promote continuous improvement within all of our programs, we have adopted the Arizona Quality Standards for Out-of-School Time Programs developed by the Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence and Valley of the Sun United Way. 7 Elementary Grades K-8 Cupcake Wars Come decorate cupcakes after school! This hands-on class is a beginners course in cupcake decorating and artistic expression. Weekly, students will create and bring home two artistic treats using some of the real tools of pastry chefs. Creative projects include: sheep, owls, bugs, piggies, and goofy monsters. Course fee includes all the supplies, just show up! For grades K - 6. (5 weeks). *Students are NOT permitted to consume our treats/food in class. *Some food materials used in this class may have come in contact with peanuts, nut products, and other items known to cause allergic reactions. *It is the parents responsibility to list allergies of their child(ren) at registration AND to contact Bonanza Education directly at (480) to discuss their child s allergies and/or any other concerns/needs. 9 Elementary Grades K-8 ActivStars CHEER ActivStars is proud to be a leader in offering beginner, intermediate and advanced cheer. The course is designed to be fun and exciting. Students have the opportunity to advance each semester and participate in parades and performances. The cheer program promotes: leadership, responsibility, enthusiasm, improved academic performance, respect for teachers and parents, good morals, confidence, poise, physical fitness, artistic expression, and competitive spirit. Coaches break down techniques and apply them in fun type drills in class. ActivStars Soccer promotes better coordination, endurance, leadership, and teamwork both on and off the field. 10 Elementary Grades K Junior Golf Success RIGHT START GOLF This golf instruction program has received national awards from the PGA and USGA. Students will learn the Golf s 4 Keys Instruction Program which teaches the proper set-up and technique to learn how to make full swing, pitching, and chipping strokes. Classes take place on the schools athletic fields using a proprietary 1/3 weight ball that flies and performs like a full weight ball. All equipment is provided. Grades K-5. (8 weeks). Athletes In Training Sports Club provides boys & girls the opportunity to participate in multiple sports with friends, right after school and right on campus! We believe that keeping sports fun encourages children to stay active and to keep playing sports throughout their childhood while improving self confidence, skills, and nourishing their brains for better academic performance. Our energetic and fun coaches teach children a new sport each session, through fun skill activities and weekly scrimmages with teammates. 15 Elementary Grades K-8 Art at Mirage Movies, Monsters, and Mayhem: Art for Grades 1-4 Children s movies will be the inspiration behind these after school art workshops. We ll explore: -Film director Tim Burton s animated musical The Nightmare Before Christmas -Disney s Monsters University -Disney s Monsters Inc. -Disney s Alice in Wonderland -Disney s Pete s Dragon -DreamWorks Trolls Armatures, fabric, Crayola Model Magic, and roved wool will be used to create soft sculptures and sculpture-inthe-round. We ll make Zero, Jack Skellington s ghost dog from The Nightmare Before Christmas and your very own version of a monster like Sully from Monsters Inc. We ll combine printmaking, stencils, and plaster casts to create an Alice in Wonderland themed 2-D composition. You ll work with an armature, Crayola Model Magic, and sheep s wool to create a Troll. Pete s Dragon will be the theme for a 3-D dragon helmet/mask. Mirage s former art teacher, Mrs. Stevens-Moore, will teach these hands-on sessions. Classes are kept small so each student receives lots of one-on-one attention. All supplies, tools, and materials are included in the class fee. For boys and girls grades 1-4. (5 weeks). Students must have their driving permit in order to receive the behind-thewheel training. 100% attendance is required. Students must also be currently enrolled in/attending an Arizona high school. This class is approved by the Arizona Department of Transportation. Once successfully completed, students will receive an official Driver Education Certificate which fulfills the state requirement for the Graduated License, usually exempting the student from being required to take the road test with an MVD examiner.
