2 Welcome to FPD s Center for Discovery! The Center for Discovery is full of exciting opportunities for students and adults to learn new hobbies, improve their skills or expand their knowledge. Our goal is to present original classes and camps that are taught in the Christ-centered environment of First Presbyterian Day School. All classes are open to the community and offer unique ways to learn beyond the classroom. If you have any questions, please contact Elizabeth Leslein at , ext. 182 or elizabeth.leslein@fpdmacon.org. All grades listed are for the school year. Before & After Camp Care also available for preschool & elementary. Registration and more information: LEARN academic & educational camps Chess for Kids For boys and girls in grades 2-6 Chess is an old game that can be learned by young children. Waging a war on an 8x8 grid can be fun and carries many benefits for learning and development. Chess players learn to use high-order thinking skills, analyze actions and consequences, and visualize future problems. Students gain insight into the nature of competition and strengthen patience, perseverance and grit. Students in the course will learn basic rules and strategies for playing and completing chess games. Instructor: Dr. Barry Shealy, FPD Assistant Headmaster Dates: Thursdays, September 6 - November 29 (no class November 22) Time: 3:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Location: FPD Media Center Cost: $50 The Carpenter Shop For boys and girls in grades K - 2 The Carpenter Shop is where you will build with a bang and a plop. Come join the fun and learn how to hammer and nail. Builders will create small projects that they can take home. This will help increase hand and eye coordination in a fun, interactive environment. Instructor: CFD Instructor Dates: Mondays, September 10, 17, 24 Times: 3:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. Cost: $95 Make it Move Camp For boys and girls in grades K - 2 Making it move is the name of the game at this exciting camp! Kids will love to see their creations in motion using LEGO wireless remote controls. Each day, campers will use fascinating and challenging LEGO components to create dynamic vehicles, inventions, machines, and more. As they enjoy the fun of building, campers will understand the basic working principles of many ingenious devices that are part of our everyday lives. Campers will also learn how to magnify, diminish and redirect force to move objects at different speeds and in different directions. This camp is loads of fun and learning for budding builders. Dates: Mondays, September 10, 17, 24, October 1, 15, 22

3 Junior Builders Camp For boys and girls in grades PreK - K Come build and explore using LEGO bricks. We ll make unique models and learn to follow basic instructions to create colorful LEGO structures. Dates: Thursdays, September 6, 13, 20, 27, October 4, 11 Coding for Kids For boys and girls in grades 3-5 The ability to code is a key component of technology education today. Our coding program will teach students important strategies to enhance their logic and problem-solving skills, as well as help them work toward becoming technological innovators of tomorrow. Our program offers a skill level progression of coding concepts. Students will be introduced to basic coding with a fun, user-friendly coding software. Dates: Wednesdays, September 5, 12, 19, 26, October 3, 10 Junior Robotics with WeDo 2.0 For boys and girls in grades 2-3 How would you like to turn your next LEGO creation into a robot, programed to do exactly what you tell it to do? Junior Robotics offers all the fun of building with LEGO Bricks, plus the challenge of computer programming! LEGO Education s WeDo 2.0 is a drag-and-drop, icon-based software that introduces kids to the world of wireless computer programming and robotics. Dates: Tuesdays, October 16, 30, November 6, 12, 27, December 4 Scratch Programming + Building with EV3 For boys and girls in grades 3-5 Bring LEGO Bricks to life with coding! The ability to code is a key component of technology education today. Our programs offer skill level progression of coding concepts as students advance through multiple levels from beginner through advanced. Students will build models with LEGO Education s WeDo or EV3 elements, then control their models with the codes they write. Dates: Thursdays, October 18, 25, November 1, 8, 15, 29 American Red Cross Babysitting Training Course For girls in grades 6-9 The purpose of this course is to provide current and future babysitters with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely give care for children and infants. Participants will learn basic first aid and safe and appropriate skills for taking care of babies. Participants will also learn how to pick-up and hold an infant or toddler, bottle-feed an infant, spoon-feed an infant, change a diaper, and help a conscious infant or child who is choking. All participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the class. Instructor: American Red Cross Teacher Date: Saturday, September 29 Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Cost: $135 Registration closes Monday, September 10. Minimum required by Red Cross must be met to host class. 2 //

4 Viking Boys Basketball League For boys in grades 4-6 PLAY athletic leagues Viking Viking Football League Flag Football League for boys in grades 1-2 Junior Football League for boys in grades 3-4 Senior Football League for boys in grades 5-6 The Viking Football League introduces football to the youth of the Middle Georgia community, emphasizing the fundamentals of the game while encouraging teamwork, fair play, and most of all fun! Players are coached by volunteer coaches and team moms. DATES FOR VFL: Saturday, August 18: 9:00 a.m. Flag League Evaluations 9:30 a.m. Senior League Equipment Distribution 10:30 a.m. Junior League Equipment Distribution Monday, August 20: 5:45 p.m. Flag League Make-up Evaluations Tuesday, August 21: 6:00 p.m. Junior & Senior League Group Practice & Evaluations Thursday, August 23: 6:00 p.m. Flag League First Practices 6:00 p.m. Junior & Senior League Group Practice & Evaluations Monday, August 27: 6:00 p.m. Junior & Senior Leagues First Practice Friday, September 7: VFL Night at FPD football vs. Hancock Co. Tuesday, September 11: Flag League First Regular Season Game Tuesday, October 16: Last Regular Season Game Tuesday, October 23: Flag League Playoffs begin Times and dates for Junior and Senior League Games TBD. Cost: Flag Football - $90, Junior League - $125, Senior League - $140 The Viking Boys Basketball League is a recreational and competitive basketball league. It is an opportunity for players to learn skills that will help improve and prepare them for middle school basketball. The season consists of practice, games, and a conclusion tournament. All participants must be signed up by November 15 to schedule evaluations. Spots are limited in this league. League Coordinator: Rick Mixon, FPD Parent Dates: November - January Location: FPD Gyms Cost: $140 Soccer League For boys & girls in grades K - 7 The Viking Soccer League is a recreational intramural soccer league for boys and girls. All games are played on small fields and co-team of 6-8 players. Teams are formed based on our knowledge of players, as well as rankings provided by parents. Current FPD varsity soccer players coach all VSL teams and serve as referees for most of the games. There are short practice sessions held before each scheduled game. The full schedule of games will be available before the first games begin. Games last approximately one hour. At the conclusion of the regular season the top two teams in each division, based on regular season records, will be chosen to play for the league championship. All participants in the league will receive a complete soccer uniform, which includes a jersey, shorts and socks. Players must have shin-guards and cleats are highly recommended. These items are not provided by the league. More information about Viking Soccer League can be found at Instructor: Joshua Trieste, FPD Boys and Girls Soccer Coach Dates: November 5 - December 10 Time: Times are determined by the number of people in each league. Games could start between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. depending on number of participants. Location: FPD Soccer Field Cost: $95 COMING THIS FALL! For ages Details to be announced soon.

5 CREATE art & creative programs Art Elementary Art For boys and girls in grades PreK - 5 Create a variety of art projects using various materials. Instructor: Stephanie Garrison, Middle School Art Teacher Dates: Monday, September 24, October 1, 8 Location: FPD Middle School Art Room Cost: $110 Christmas Art Workshop #1 For boys and girls in grades PreK - 5 Artists will create two or three pieces of artwork from various materials that will make incredible Christmas gifts or become family treasures. Please note that the two Christmas Workshops will entail different projects so students may attend both. Instructors: Nancy Butler, High School Art Teacher Mary Bennet Rose, Art Assistant Dates: Wednesdays, November 7 and 14 Location: FPD High School Art Room Cost: $75 Christmas Art Workshop #2 For boys and girls in grades PreK - 5 Artists will create two or three pieces of artwork from various materials that will make incredible Christmas gifts or become family treasures. Please note that the two Christmas Workshops will entail different projects so students may attend both. 6 Theatre Acting Lessons For girls and boys in grades 4-12 Dr. Andrew Strickland, FPD s Fine Arts Director and Theatre/ Dance teacher, is available for private or small group lessons in the following areas: Beginning Acting (4th - 6th grades) The focus at this level will be the development of basic acting skills including vocal production and clarity, playing a character, stage movement, and line delivery. These lessons can work for individuals or small groups of 4 or less. Intermediate Acting (6th - 8th grades) Young performers who have already have some experience in theatre will learn more about monologue selection and preparation, character creation and performance, vocal training, and basic Stanislavski acting theory. This level is also appropriate for both individuals or small groups. Advanced Acting (9th - 12th grades) Experienced performers will enhance performance skills and/or prepare for college auditions. Possible concepts for study include advanced acting theory and practice, development of a full audition repertoire (including song preparation if desired), dialect and accent training, and scene work. While this level is generally designed for individual instruction, small groups with similar performance goals would be possible. Beginning Musical Theatre Voice (4th - 12th grades) Instruction will focus on preparing young performers to appear and thrive in musical theatre productions. Concepts covered include basic development of the singing voice, improvement of pitch and tone, music reading, and song preparation and performance. While these lessons are aimed at individuals, younger students could benefit from a small group setting. Music Music Lessons Open to all ages FPD offers a wide variety of music lessons with talented teachers here on our campus. Lessons are available in guitar, drums, bass, clarinet, ukulele, piano, and trombone. Instructors: Jonathan Baker, FPD Band Director - Trombone John Hughey, Music Instructor - Guitar, Ukulele, Fiddle, Drums Prices vary. Dance Princess Ballet For girls in grades 3K - K An introduction to the art of ballet through creative movement and music appreciation for students in 3K-K. Children are introduced to movements that will allow them to use their bodies in order to say something. Time will be spent developing individual expression and imagination. Each student will need a black or light pink modest leotard with ballet tights and shoes. A class demonstration will be given on December 10. Instructor: Kathryn Ginaldi, Ballet Instructor Dates: Mondays, September 10 - December 10 (No class on October 8 or November 19). Time: 3:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Location: FPD Clark Fine Arts Center Cost: $195 If you are interested in taking private or group acting lessons please contact the Center for Discovery office at , ext. 182 or elizabeth.leslein@fpdmacon.org, and we will be happy to coordinate your schedule with the availability of the instructor. Individual lessons are $30 per half hour and group prices can be discussed.

7 NEW! Done in a Day Classes Stay the afternoon for creative crafts and active fun with the Viking Clubhouse and Viking Crew! Pick and choose when you come. Just $10 per afternoon. Make It Take It Tuesdays For boys and girls in grades 3K - 5 Get messy and have fun with an afternoon of hands-on creativity. Each Tuesday we will make something different, and you will leave with a surprise to take home. Dates: Tuesdays, September 4, 11, 18, 25, October 2, 16, 30 Time: 3:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Stay & Play Thursdays For boys and girls in grades 3K - 5 Join us each Thursday for different games and activities. We will run, throw, catch, build, create, and explore. Dates: Thursday: September 6, 13, 20, 27, October 4, 11, 18, 25 Time: 3:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Students must enroll by the Monday prior to each Tuesday or Thursday session. programs and classes for ADULTS Morning Yoga Strength for Women Join us for yoga combining tabata and hit for maximum strength and flexibility. Bring a mat and hand weights if desired. Instructor: April Kitchell, Certified Yoga Instructor Session 1: September, Tuesdays and Thursdays Session 2: October, Tuesdays and Thursdays Session 3: November, Tuesdays and Thursdays Session 4: December, Tuesdays and Thursdays Times: 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 am Location: Central City Church Cost: $40 per month Beginning Tap Lessons for Adults Have you ever wanted to tap dance? Looking for a fun way to exercise without the monotony? This class presents the basics of tap dancing in a fun environment without the pressure of a recital or performance. Learn to tap from the most basic level to learning actual Broadway choreography. The instructor, Dr. Andrew Strickland, is a highly-trained and former professional dancer who loves to make dancing fun for his students. Tap shoes are required for this class. Instructor: Dr. Andrew Strickland, FPD Fine Arts Director & Theatre/Dance Instructor Dates: Tuesdays, August 21, 28, September 4, 11, 18 Times: 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Location: FPD Dance Studio Cost: $100 Clay Camp for Adults Make a handmade piece of pottery to display in your home. No art skills are necessary. Just bring a friend and get ready to have some fun! Instructor: Stephanie Garrison, Middle School Art Teacher Dates: Tuesdays, September 4, 11, 17 Times: 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Location: FPD Art Room Cost: $150 6 //

8 After-School Enrichment Programs In addition to FPD s various classes through the Center for Discovery, FPD also provides after-school enrichment opportunities through two age-based programs - The Viking Clubhouse (3K - 2nd Grade) and The Viking Crew (3rd - 5th Grade). Both programs provide opportunities for students to complete homework as well as enjoy games, activities, and time with friends. Students attending these programs must be enrolled at FPD. 3K - 2nd Grade FPD Kindergarten Building 12:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. for 3K students 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. for PreK - 2nd grade students 3rd - 5th Grade Viking Crew Room, FPD Fifth Grade Hallway 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. For rates and more information, visit POLICIES Admission: Admissions is offered to any student or adult who meets the eligibility requirements of the camp or activity. First Presbyterian Day School welcomes any student or adult regardless of race, color, religion, or ethnic origin who meets the standard of the activity. First Presbyterian Day School does teach and offer all classes from a Christian world view. Registration: Registration is required for any class offering. Session are filled on a first-come first serve basis. Please enroll early. Any registrations that have been received after a class has reached capacity will be returned with a full refund. Mail the completed application and payment in full for each selected class and seminar to First Presbyterian Day School, Center for Discovery, 5671 Calvin Drive, Macon, GA Online registration is available on our website at Payment and Fees: Class fees are due in full at the time of registration. All fees include all activities and supplies unless otherwise noted. Payments may be made by check or FPD students may apply the payment to their student account. FPD accounts will be billed upon registration, not during the month of the class. Class Minimum Policy: Some classes have participant minimums set by the instructor. If the minimum is not reached three business days prior to the beginning of the class, the class will be cancelled. Participants will be notified by and payments refunded. Refund Policy: A full refund is offered to the participant if the class is full or if the class is cancelled. Except in cases of an emergency that is disclosed to First Presbyterian Day School prior to the start of an activity, refunds will not be given five business days prior to the beginning of the class or once the class has begun. Departure: Students should be picked up promptly at the end of each camp. For the safety of all participants, girls or boys left on campus before or after the class will be escorted to the Viking Clubhouse or the Viking Crew. Attendance: First Presbyterian Day School will not contact parents when a student is not in attendance. NO refunds will be given for students who do not choose to attend camps or activities. Behavior: Students are expected to adhere to the policies and procedures of First Presbyterian Day School students. First Presbyterian Day School reserves the right to dismiss any student whose behavior poses a discipline problem. No refunds will be issued for any student who is asked to withdraw. Personal Items: First Presbyterian Day School is not responsible for lost or stolen property. Student should not bring valuable items.
