3 Wednesday, September 13, 2017, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Overview of Statewide Resources for Progress in the General Curriculum During this training, you will learn what resources are available to help you navigate the world of special education. We will look at resources that include state and federal laws, Individual Educations Plans (IEP), accommodations, appropriate instruction and several other topics. Computers will be available for you to use as we look at each resource. There will be plenty of time for you to browse the different resources on your own and ask questions. Call by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, September 11th. ** Wednesday, September 20, 2017, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Read Aloud Workshop (PreK-3rd grade) The Read-Aloud Workshop is geared for families of prek-3rd grade and teaches parents how to establish an effective and fun at-home reading routine with their child. Developed by The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk at UT Austin, the read-aloud routine focuses on asking questions and introducing age-appropriate vocabulary. Every parent participant is provided a read-aloud routine card to guide their session, a nonfiction reader, and an accompanying vocabulary handout. Call by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, September 25th. ** Thursday, September 28, 2017, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Dares, Drugs and Dangerous Teen Trends Are you really in the know about drugs, dares, and dangerous technology trends? This training is designed to increase drug, alcohol, and technology awareness for all members of the school community. Parents attending this training will learn the latest trends and will be amazed at the different ways our students are hiding drugs. You will also learn about dangerous apps and technology trends affecting the school community. During this training, planning pieces that are often overlooked such as Special Needs Trusts, ABLE Accounts, and Public Benefit Protection strategies will be discussed. The financial planning process will be explained in a language everyone can understand, creating awareness, and inspiring parents to take action. Call by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29th ** Wednesday, October 4, 2017, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Brain-Based Learning and Specially-Designed Instruction in the Inclusive Classroom This training will focus on strategies your child may use for success in the inclusive classroom and help parents understand how their child s brain learns, recalls academic information, and problem solves. In addition, parents will gain an understanding of the difference in speciallydesigned instruction and differentiated instruction and how it can impact their child s education. Come and discover, as you actively engage in brain-based strategies, how a parent s positive attitude and understanding can make your child s learning joyful. Cline, M.D. and based on the experience of a combined total of over 75 years working with and raising children. This is an approach to raising children that provides loving support from parents while at the same time expecting children to be respectful and responsible. Love allows children to grow through their mistakes. Logic allows them to live with the consequences of their choices. Love and Logic is easy to use, raises responsible children, and changes lives. By attending this training, you will learn to use humor, hope, and empathy to build up your adult-child relationship, provide real limits in a loving way, and learn how to teach consequences and healthy decision making. 4 Wednesday, October 11, 2017, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. My Child Doesn t Talk: An Introduction to Strategies for the Non-Verbal Child with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities This training will discuss and demonstrate a number of research-based strategies addressing the language development needs of children with developmental disabilities including Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and others. In this training, we will identify barriers to these children receiving supportive strategies and why they need these supports. We will look at apps available on tablet devices as well as dedicated devices. Some barriers to the success of these devices will be addressed and ways to increase success with these will be highlighted. Call by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, October 9th. ** Tuesday, October 17, 2017, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Bridging the Math Gap Between School and Home (Kindergarten Grade 2) In this training, participants will learn how to help their child by bridging the math concepts taught in school to home life. Hands-on activities will be used to show how math is being learned in the classroom. The math will focus on developing number sense. Call by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 13th. ** Wednesday, October 18, 2017, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention for Parents & Caregivers: Sharing strategies from your child s school that you can use at home. This training provides parents and caregivers with an overview of the concepts and strategies taught in the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training program used by schools that can help in the continuity of support and care. It will provide parents with insights into behavior patterns of their children. This training will not include physical restraint strategies. By participating in the workshop, participants will walk away with action plans filled with strategies they can begin to use immediately. Participants will discover the various components of reading and writing, investigate research-based reading and writing strategies that can be easily practiced at home and school, and will actively participate in creating activities to align with each strategy. Participants should be ready to have some fun, interact with other parents, and get crafty! All materials will be provided. The 7 Habits of Successful Families training offers a muchneeded framework for applying universal, self-evident principles that enable family members to communicate their challenges and overcome them successfully together. In this training, parents will learn to: Apply an Inside-Out Approach to problem solving and goal creation; Resolve differences in marriage and family relationships by creatively cooperating together; Establish a better work/life balance; Become more effective in raising emotionally healthy and empowered children; Employ the skills of Empathic Listening and synergy; and Learn to effectively discipline and motivate children. Learn what dyslexia is and how to support your child if he/ she has dyslexia. We will explore the common risk factors for dyslexia as well as common misperceptions or myths about dyslexia. Participants will learn strategies to help support their student if he/she is at-risk for or identified with dyslexia. We will also explore the Dyslexia Technology Plan and various apps your child can use to help them. (Participants may bring their own device, or check-out an ipad from ESC 20 for this training.) 5 Wednesday, November 8, 2017, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. The Parent s Guide to the Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Process & Navigating the Legal Framework This training will provide participants the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the special education process of their procedural rights and responsibilities so that they will be able to fully participate in the decision-making process regarding their children s education. Call by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, November 6th. ** Friday, November 10, 2017, 8:30 a.m. 2:00 p.m. Cost: $15 Family and Community Engagement Symposium The Family and Community Engagement Symposium provides parents, foster parents, grandparents, and other caregivers, along with educators and other school district personnel information that promotes student success through family engagement. Sessions include topics such as: home-school relationships; family engagement; social and emotional issues; understanding school systems; and community resources. **Interpreter provided.** Tuesday, November 14, 2017, 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. What Parents Need to Know About Human Trafficking Note: Children ages 8+ are able to attend this session with their family. In this training, parents will learn: How traffickers select & approach; What traffickers look for; How to outsmart deception; What things make a child vulnerable; The two ways traffickers approach; The three kinds of lies; The four worst choices; To separate the myths from the facts about human trafficking in the U.S.; How it happens, who it happens to, and who are the victims; How traffickers target youth at school and in any home; The signs that indicate your child may be in danger; Why it s more important to talk to your kids about love than sex; and Why stranger danger is no longer effective. Learning the skills to negotiate these conflicts is crucial to children s social and emotional growth. Join us as we look closely and concretely at children s challenging behaviors and effective adult responses to those behaviors. In addition, this training will also discuss strategies to help children, teens, and parents advocate for themselves in the school setting, as well as services available in schools. 6 Saturday, December 2, 2017, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Families Talking Together Families Talking Together (FTT) is a parent-based program focusing on improving parent-child communication and is effective in delaying sexual initiation and preventing risky sexual behavior among middle-school-aged youth (10-14 yrs.). This session will offer tips and group discussions on getting the conversation started, monitoring/supervision, and helping enhance your child s refusal skills. This interactive session is offered by staff members from Healthy Futures of Texas. In this training, parents will learn about personal health and well-being, becoming aware of how their choices affect their family s wellness, gain ideas for incorporating activity into their family s daily lifestyle, and learn tips for planning and eating healthy snacks and meals on a budget. TAPPestry is comprised of Parents, Teachers, Administrators, and other Professionals working with children with special needs. During this conference, you will have an opportunity to attend various breakout sessions on topics such as: Autism/Asperger s, guardianship, various learning disabilities, transition services, how to handle behavior issues, and more. Community agencies and vendors are available to share information and resources about their services.
