2 Hau Mitakuyapi ka Mikodapi (hello my friends and relatives): Welcome to the 2018 United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) Events Week! Events Week is our gift to students and the community. The week is dedicated to highlighting our beautiful culture, celebrating competition, and coming together, to find solutions to important issues affecting us all. We host thousands of visitors from across the globe and our great nation, through their participation in the International Powwow, LEGENDS Softball Tournament, or Tribal Leaders Summit. As part of this gift, we are giving back. All profit generated from these events are directed to student scholarships to assist them in completing their education. I was pleased to see the theme for this year is entitled Leadership Educating the Next Generation this recognizes our value system as tribal nations and our belief in lifelong learning. Our elders carry our language, and within our language, is our culture and our spirituality. All tribal people understand the sacredness of family, community, and respect for one another. We know that we are inherently bound through our historical experience and must continue to stand together to protect and maintain tribal sovereignty for future generations. The 22nd Annual UTTC Tribal Leaders Summit was founded upon this perspective twenty-two years ago. This year, we are giving those who attend even more options to learn and connect with our past and work together to address the issues facing all of our communities, today. Because of the overwhelming response to our Call for Presentations, the Summit is running multiple sessions at once to provide a variety of tracks allowing Summit participants to choose areas of their interest rather than being limited to a single session. The Call for Presentations was a huge success that we hope will continue as we move forward with the new format. We are very pleased to welcome all community members and visitors to the UTTC campus to participate in the 49th Annual UTTC International Powwow, also known as the Home of the Champions. We have revitalized our arena through infrastructure improvements to the Powwow Arena and the Food Court area to enhance the layout and provide better parking, shade, and vending space, for all powwow goers. The Pow-wow Committee has done excellent work in bringing together head staff comprised of recognized and respected powwow leaders to put on this exciting event for the UTTC campus, Bismarck-Mandan community, and the Great Plains Region. Thank you once again to the many sponsors from the Bismarck-Mandan community as well as our tribal, regional, and national sponsors! Thank you to the many Committee members and UTTC workforce who have contributed their time and effort to make the Tribal Leaders Summit, International Powwow, Legends Softball, Youth Basketball, and Golf Tournaments, a success. Lastly, thank you to the many attendees of all of our events that make this such an exciting week! 3 wow is a contest powwow, where dancers and singers compete for prize money. Judges selected by the powwow committee will evaluate a dancer s performance based on the knowledge and skill of their category; keeping time with the drum; and regalia. The UTTC International Powwow is one of the last large outdoor events on the northern Great Plains powwow circuit. Whether it is your first powwow or you travel the circuit, the beautiful color and pageantry of grand entry is something you won t want to miss. We welcome everyone from dancers, singers, to spectators to come and join us for the 49th Annual UTTC International Powwow. UTTC Events Week: For more than 45 years, United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) has served more than 10,000 American Indian students from more than 75 federally recognized Indian Tribes across the nation. Rooted in a history of bringing education to American Indians the college also opens its doors to anyone who is looking to learn. UTTC is dedicated to not only educating students, but to be a place where history, community, and culture all come together. In that tradition, every year we invite the community and people from across the globe to come to celebrate with us through our gift to the community, UTTC Events Week. Events Week combines the celebration of culture, the pursuit of knowledge, and a love of competition through six major events over the course of a week. Events Week includes the UTTC Tribal Leaders Summit, UTTC International Powwow, UTTC LEGENDS Softball Tournament, UTTC Open Golf Tournament, UTTC High School Basketball Tournament, and UTTC Powwow Run. We begin Events Week every year with the Tribal Leaders Summit. Bringing hundreds of tribal, federal and state leaders together to participate in conference presentations and discussions to learn and discuss the most pressing issues facing tribal communities and our country, today. Finally, for the love of the game, and a love of sport we host multiple competitions for those looking to compete with athletes from across the country in our UTTC LEGENDS Softball Tournament, UTTC Open Golf Tournament, UTTC High School Basketball Tournament, and UTTC Powwow Run. Later in the week, we invite people of all ages to celebrate with us in the United Tribes Technical College International Powwow which is held every second weekend in September. It is not only a celebration of community and culture but also a beautiful display of dance, music, and food that have been passed down for generations. The UTTC International Pow- A week set aside to celebrate what brought us all together, a belief in the power of education, and a dedication to continuing to serve others by continuing to teach generations to come. 6 Intro to Student Profiles: United Tribes Technical College has a variety of programs ranging from certificates to bachelor s academic programs. UTTC s 22-degree programs offer students the opportunity to choose from Career and Technical Programs to bachelor s degrees. Each program offers students small classes as well as access to instructors dedicated to helping students succeed and grow in and out of the classroom. Academic Programs Diploma Automotive Technology Associate of Applied Science Automotive Technology Computer Information Technology Graphic Design Health Physical Education & Recreation Practical Nursing Culinary Arts & Nutrition Associate of Science Business Administration Business Management Criminal Justice Elementary Education Environmental Science & Research General Studies Human & Social Services Pre-Engineering Certificates Culinary Arts Heavy Equipment Operations Welding Technology Bachelors Business Administration Criminal Justice Elementary Education Environmental Science & Research Culinary Arts and Nutrition Program The Nutrition and Foodservice Department (NUT) at United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) offers an AAS degree in Culinary Arts and Nutrition or a certificate in Culinary Arts. The degree plan supports cultural connections to Mother Earth through gathering and growing foods, health education messages, and food-related stories. Both the AAS degrees and the certificate allow students to earn the National Restaurant Association s ServSafe credential. The Nutrition and Foodservice Department collaborates with UTTC s Land Grant Extension Programs. This relationship provides students with opportunities for hands-on experience and mentoring from community educators. Classes are small, so students and faculty get acquainted and work together to ensure that each student has a good learning experience. Practicum experiences with local senior centers, restaurants, cafeterias, school foodservice, and private businesses lead to job offers and opportunities that support future employment. Student Profile: Charles Wise Spirit, sophomore Culinary Arts and Nutrition student For Charles Wise Spirit, choosing UTTC was simple because he has a passion for cooking. My favorite part [of the program] is learning all of the new recipes, making the recipes, [the instructors], they re good instructors, and I love them. I just love this Culinary and Nutrition Program, Charles Wise Spirit, sophomore Culinary Arts and Nutrition student says. In the Culinary Arts and Nutrition program, Wise Spirit is carrying on the family legacy. 6

7 Course with classroom theory and skill labs, and a Pharmacology course. Criminal Justice Program The Criminal Justice Program offers a Bachelor of Science and Associate of Science degree program of study. Currently, we also offer an online option for the Associate of Science degree. The program provides a broad curriculum for students who wish to pursue entry and intermediate level careers in Criminal Justice. Students apply to the program during the fall semester when they are enrolled in pre-nursing coursework. Upon admission to the program, (which begins in spring semester) students accompany nursing faculty into a variety of clinical settings as they learn about nursing care provided to adults and children in the classroom. Since 2001, the Criminal Justice field has experienced significant expansion and several new careers fields have developed, many requiring Bachelor and Associate Degrees Upon completion of the program, graduates apply to take the national council licensure exam (NCLEX-PN). Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are employed in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, home health, mental and community settings under the direction of registered nurses and physicians. Upon completion, our graduates will be prepared for employment as Federal, State or Tribal Law Enforcement Officers, Corrections Officers, Parole and Probation Officers, Transportation Safety Officers, Victim Advocates, United States Customs, Homeland Security, Military Investigative Services and private security agencies. Student Profile: Kiana Maxon, senior Practical Nursing student Kiana Maxon knew she wanted to be a nurse. I ve always heard great things about it, honestly. I ve looked at their graduating percent, they just have such a high graduating class, Kiana Maxon, senior UTTC Practical Nursing student says. Student Profile: Alison Schamp, sophomore Criminal Justice student Alison Schamp, sophomore Criminal Justice student says, what sets UTTC s Criminal Justice Program apart is the instructors. The Instructors are the best. They are really knowledgeable and I like how a lot of them are still active duty and they have a lot of street smarts and book smarts, Schamp says. However, a high pass rate for the national council licensure exam was not the only thing that drew Maxon to UTTC. The teaching has honestly been amazing, Maxon says. They re more one-on-one with students and I am getting a better understanding of everything. Practical Nursing Program The Practical Nursing (PN) department offers an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Practical Nursing (AASPN). The first semester includes a pre-nursing Introduction to Nursing 7
