Informatics To promote a culture of excellence and innovation in informatics solutions designed to work more efficiently with measurable results that contribute to our other missions and are disseminated to society. 2
3 Background History of Vanderbilt University School of Nursing Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (VUSN) has been known for being traditionally ahead of our time since the initiation of the first nursing program. From our early history to present day, the school has introduced novel programs and program delivery to provide students with a comprehensive nursing education. Today, Vanderbilt's doctor of nursing program is ranked 11th and its master of science in nursing program is ranked 15 th among graduate schools of nursing in U.S. News & World Report. A steadfast commitment to advancedpractice nursing education a distinguishing factor among many of our peer institutions reinforces Vanderbilt s focus on educating nurse leaders. Early history VUSN was founded in 1909 as the training school for nurses of Vanderbilt University Hospital, with a three-year program leading to eligibility for licensure. In 1923, Rockefeller Foundation funding enabled the school to develop one of the nation s first baccalaureate programs, allowing students to pursue the bachelor of science in nursing (B.S.N.). Transition from the hospital program to a collegiate program began in 1925, and governance of the School of Nursing was moved from the hospital to the university in The first B.S.N. degree was awarded in In 1955, Vanderbilt became one of six schools of nursing in the South to offer an advancedpractice degree program (the master of science in nursing or MSN) the first to do so in Tennessee. Close ties with Vanderbilt University Medical Center The School of Nursing is one of the 10 schools at Vanderbilt University. It has a close relationship with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which allows the School of Nursing and the medical center s nursing services to function closely, offering increased opportunity for nursing faculty and students to interact in an interdisciplinary environment with nursing staff, medical faculty and medical students in the areas of teaching, research and practice. Vanderbilt, an independent, privately supported university, and the separate, nonprofit Vanderbilt University Medical Center share a respected name and enjoy close collaboration through education and research. Defining the focus on advanced-practice nursing education Recognizing changing trends in nursing, the faculty completed a self-study in 1982, which called for an increased focus on graduate education and research. Thus, the School of Nursing positioned itself to respond to the need to educate nurses to grow their advanced clinical practice skills and management skills and to enable them to bring a strong foundation in the liberal arts and sciences to their professional studies. Consequently, the B.S.N. program was phased out and the emphasis was placed on increasing the number of MSN graduates. The faculty creatively reformatted the existing B.S.N. curriculum into an accelerated pathway for second-degree students to acquire the generalist nursing competencies. The curriculum for this portion of the MSN program of study was entitled PreSpecialty, as it provided the generalist nursing foundation for the MSN. specialty. The Tennessee Board of Nursing recognized the pre-specialty portion of the curriculum as meeting the requirements for licensure as a registered nurse; thus students become registered nurses at the end of the PreSpecialty curriculum as they enter the specialty level portion of the MSN program of study. The end result of the self-study was the creation of a multiple-entry option for the MSN program. Students can enter the MSN program with a B.S.N. degree and complete the specialty portion of the curriculum (39 credit hours); alternatively, students can enter with a degree in another field and complete the PreSpecialty component before starting the MSN specialty level completing a total of 82 credit hours. This new pathway allowed second-degree students with the opportunity to acquire the MSN degree in a time-efficient manner (while meeting all competencies of a traditional B.S.N. program). The rapid growth in student enrollment since this change underscores its impact when the new entry option was initiated in 1988, 16 second-degree students enrolled in the PreSpecialty portion, while 35 students enrolled in the specialty portion. In August 2016, 150 students with degrees in fields other than nursing enrolled in Vanderbilt s PreSpecialty program. 3
4 Ph.D. and D.N.P. doctoral-level programs were established in 1993 and 2008 respectively to provide even higher levels of nursing education to effectively train the nation s nursing leadership. Impact FY2017 Top Accomplishments Once again Vanderbilt University School of Nursing has been named among the Best Graduate Schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report magazine. The School of Nursing Doctorate of Nursing Practice Program is ranked No. 11 for the 2018 year. The MSN program continues to be among the top Schools of Nursing. For the 2018 ranking, the MSN program was ranked No. 15, tied with the University of California, Los Angeles. Being ranked #11 and #15 for the DNP and MSN program is particularly noteworthy, as there are over 200 DNP programs and over 500 MSN programs in the country. VUSN s nurse-midwifery nurse practitioner program was ranked No. 1 in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. In August 2017, VUSN welcomed 879 students to what is one of the largest nursing programs in the country. Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (VUSN) received accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree, Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) and post-master s certificate programs for a five-year period through The school spent months in preparation for the voluntary, self-regulatory accreditation. The CCNE accreditation signifies that Vanderbilt provides quality nursing education and that its graduates are educated in accordance with the highest national nursing standards.
