2 COURSE OVERVIEW This course has been designed to bring you an intense focus on one organ system, the neonatal brain and nervous system; the organ system that is ultimately responsible for our quality of life. We will take you on a journey from fetal life, through specialized care in the NICU, and finally beyond the doors of the NICU, to the infant s real home. You will hear from an esteemed list of speakers, all who are experts in their own right. The list includes professionals from a variety of disciplines nursing, medicine, education, follow-up, and families. This comprehensive course will prepare you to care for the most ill and premature infants with a new appreciation for the resiliency, adaptability, and fragility of the newborn brain and for the power you have to hold their futures in your hands. Date & Time Course Day 1: Tues., November 8 Course Day 2: Wed., Novmeber 9 Location: Berg Hall, Li Ka Shing Conference Center Stanford University, School of Medicine

CEU INFORMATION This course is pending approval for Nursing Continuing Education by California Board of Registered Nursing Provider Number CEP 9713 for 16.7 contact hours. To receive Nursing Continuing Education credit for your attendance at this course, you must sign-in each day that you attend all the sessions, complete and submit a course evaluation.
4 COURSE OBJECTIVES After attending this course, the attendee will be able to: 1. Identify risk factors, incidence and common causes; describe the pathophysiology, diagnostic work-up, two potential medical treatments, procedures, referrals; and list two nursing interventions or care considerations, for infants with the following conditions: Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy CNS Malformations Seizures 2. Describe the indications and prognostic value of neuro-monitoring with EEG, aeeg, and NIRS and neuro-imaging with cranial Ultrasound and MRI during the neonatal period; and when applicable in early childhood. Additional Day 1 Objectives: 3. List the critical periods of fetal/neonatal brain development and describe one disorder that may be seen when disruption to that period occurs. 4. Describe both the short and long-term impact of the two neurological injuries seen in the NICU. 5. Compare and contrast the goals of comfort care versus intensive care Additional Day 2 Objectives: 6. Verbalize components of a comprehensive neurological exam. 7. Outline the typical follow-up care of infants with neurological risk factors or injury. 8. List neuro-protective interventions for two common neonatal conditions (e.g.: HIE, Prematurity) 9. Discuss one lesson learned from hearing from parents about their NICU experience.
