2 THIS TWO-DAY COURSE WILL INCORPORATE DIDACTIC PRESENTATIONS AND HANDS-ON SIMULATIONS THAT FOCUS ON DEVELOPING AN UNDERSTANDING of the high risk, low frequency obstetrical emergencies. It encompasses team training using the TeamSTEPPS model for shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, eclamptic seizure, magnesium toxicity and maternal code. There are also five task training stations: operative vaginal delivery, Bakri balloon and uterine compression suture techniques, giving bad news to a patient and her family and appropriate documentation of a shoulder dystocia delivery note. Participants will be grouped into 5 groups of 10 and rotate as a group through the team simulations on day 1 and the task training stations on day 2. Forty scholarships are available for both conferences to Family Practice and Family Medicine physicians, Nurses and Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs), who serve the rural populations in the Southeast. The courses are limited to 50 slots each, so please register as soon as possible. PHYSICIAN LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of the course, physicians will be able to: 1. Demonstrate essential teamwork principles for optimal management of obstetric emergencies: a. Shoulder dystocia b. Post-partum hemorrhage c. Eclamptic seizure/magnesium toxicity d. Maternal code 2. Apply evidence-based, best practice guidelines for the use of forceps and vacuum to assist in performing a vaginal delivery. 3. Perform the technical maneuvers associated with a vaginal breech delivery. 4. List the indications for and demonstrate the correct placement of a Bakri balloon and uterine compression sutures. 5. Using role playing scenarios, demonstrate delivering bad news or error disclosure to a patient and her family. 6. Explicitly document the essential parts of a shoulder dystocia note. 7. Perform the correct sequence of maneuvers during a shoulder dystocia delivery. TARGET AUDIENCE: This course is specifically designed for obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine physicians, family practitioners who deliver babies, nurse-midwives and licensed midwives, OB nurses, residents and fellows. NURSING LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of the course, nurses will be able to: 1. Demonstrate essential teamwork principles for optimal management of obstetric emergencies. Shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, eclamptic seizure/magnesium toxicity and maternal code. 2. Recognize and declare an emergency without delay. 3. Demonstrate responsibility and initiative within the scope of nursing practice. 4. Demonstrate crisis management skills, including: situational awareness, problem-solving and decision-making in critical situations. 5. Identify all available resources needed in the provision of high-risk patient care. 6. Diagnose and demonstrate the correct technique necessary to repair a 3rd/4th degree laceration.
