2 AIMS Pupils at schl with medical cnditins will be prperly supprted s that they have full access t educatin, including schl trips and physical educatin. Gverning bdies ensure that arrangements are in place in schls t supprt pupils at schl with medical cnditins. New River Cllege understands that it has a respnsibility t make the schl welcming and supprtive t pupils with medical cnditins wh currently attend and t thse wh may enrl in the future. New River Cllege ensures all staff understand their duty f care t children and yung peple in the event f an emergency. All staff feel cnfident in knwing what t d in an emergency. New River Cllege understands that certain medical cnditins are serius and can be ptentially life-threatening, particularly if ill managed r misunderstd. 3 First Aid trained staff understand and are trained in what t d in an emergency fr the mst cmmn serius medical cnditins at this schl First Aid trained staff are aware f the mst cmmn serius medical cnditins at this schl. Staff at New River Cllege understand their duty f care t pupils in the event f an emergency. In an emergency situatin schl staff are required under cmmn law duty f care t act like any reasnably prudent parent. This may include administering medicatin. First Aid trained and PE and Science staff wh wrk with grups f pupils at this schl knw what t d in an emergency fr the pupils in their care with medical cnditins. Training is refreshed fr first aiders and PE staff at least nce a year. Certificatin last fr 3 years. Actin fr staff t take in an emergency fr asthma/epilepsy/anaphylaxis and diabetes is displayed in the staff rm. The schl has clear guidance n the administratin f medicatin at schl Administratin-emergency medicatin All pupils at this schl with medical cnditins have easy access t their emergency medicatin. All pupils are encuraged t carry and administer their wn emergency medicatin i.e. inhalers, epipens and insulin with a spare being kept in the schl ffice and staff rm. Pupils wh d nt carry and administer their wn emergency medicatin knw where their medicatin is stred and hw t access it. Administratin-general All use f medicatin defined as a cntrlled drug, even if the pupil can administer the medicatin themselves, is dne under the supervisin f first aid trained. New River Cllege understands the imprtance f medicatin being taken as prescribed. All staff are aware that there is n legal r cntractual duty fr any member f staff t administer medicatin r supervise a pupil taking medicatin unless they have been specifically trained t d s. 4 Fr medicatin where n specific training is necessary, any member f staff may administer prescribed and nn-prescribed medicatin t pupils under the age f 16, but nly with the written cnsent f the pupil s parent. Training is given t all staff members wh agree t administer medicatin t pupils, where specific training is needed. The lcal authrity prvides full indemnity. Parents at New River Cllege understand that if their child s medicatin changes r discntinued, r the dse r administratin methd changes, that they shuld ntify the schl immediately. All staff attending ff-site visits are aware f any pupils with medical cnditins n the visit. They receive infrmatin abut the type f cnditin, what t d in an emergency and any ther additinal supprt necessary, including any additinal medicatin r equipment needed. New River Cllege has clear guidance n the strage f medicatin at schl Safe strage emergency medicatin (epipens) Emergency medicatin is readily available t pupils wh require it at all times in the medical rm r schl ffice during the schl day. If the emergency medicatin is a cntrlled drug and needs t be lcked up, the keys are readily available in the key bx in the schl ffice. All students carry their wn epipens at all times and a spare kept in student services. Students are reminded t carry their emergency medicatin with them. Safe strage nn-emergency medicatin All nn-emergency medicatin is kept in a lckable cupbard in the schl ffice and staff rm. Pupils with medical cnditins knw where their medicatin is stred and hw t access it. Staff ensure that medicatin is nly accessible t thse fr whm it is prescribed. Safe strage general The SENCO ensures the crrect strage f medicatin at schl Half termly the SENCO checks the expiry dates fr all medicatin stred at schl The SENCO alng with the parents f pupils with medical cnditins, ensures that all emergency and nn-emergency medicatin brught int schl is clearly labelled with the pupil s name, the name and dse f medicatin and the frequency f dse. This includes all medicatin that pupils carry themselves Sme medicatin at New River Cllege may need t be refrigerated. All refrigerated medicatin is stred in an airtight cntainer and is clearly labelled in student services. This is in a secure area, inaccessible t unsupervised pupils. It is the parent s respnsibility t ensure new and in date medicatin cmes int schl n the first day f the new academic year and thrughut the year. Safe dispsal Parents are asked t cllect ut f date medicatin. If parents d nt cllect ut f date medicatin, medicatin is taken t a lcal pharmacy fr safe dispsal. The SENCO is respnsible fr checking the dates f medicatin and arranging fr the dispsal f any that have expired. This check is dne at least half termly. 4 NEW RIVER COLLEGE: Medical Plicy 2017

5 New River Cllege has clear guidance abut recrd keeping Enrlment frms Parents at New River Cllege are asked if their child has any health cnditins n the enrlment frm, which is filled ut at the start f each schl year. Parents f new pupils starting at ther times during the year are als asked t prvide this infrmatin n enrlment frms. Healthcare Plans New River Cllege uses a healthcare plan t recrd imprtant details abut individual children s medical needs at schl, their triggers, signs, symptms, medicatin and ther treatments. These healthcare plans are held in the schl ffice, in the staff rm and with the SENCO. A healthcare plan, accmpanied by an explanatin f why and hw it is used, is sent t all parents f pupils with a lng term medical cnditin. This is sent: At the start f the schl year At enrlment When a diagnsis is first cmmunicated t the schl If a pupil has a shrt-term medical cnditin that requires medicatin during schl hurs, a medicatin frm plus explanatin is sent hme fr cmpletin. Parents are regularly reminded t infrm the SENCO if their child has a medical emergency r if there have been changes t their symptms, r their medicatin and treatments change. This is t ensure the healthcare plans can be updated accrdingly. Schl Medical register Healthcare plans are used t create a centralised register f pupils with medical needs. The SENCO has respnsibility fr the register at New River Cllege. The SENCO maintains A daily medical lg is kept in the main receptin A lg f medicatin taken by pupils New River Cllege ensures that the whle schl envirnment is inclusive and favurable t pupils with medical cnditins. This includes the physical envirnment, as well as scial, sprting and educatinal activities Physical envirnment New River Cllege is cmmitted t prviding a physical envirnment that is accessible t pupils with medical cnditins. Exercise and physical activity New River Cllege understands the imprtance f all pupils taking part in sprts, games and activities. New River Cllege ensures classrm teachers, PE staff make apprpriate adjustments t sprts, games and ther activities t make physical activity accessible t all pupils. Teachers and PE staff are aware f pupils in their care wh have been advised t avid r take special precautins with particular activities. 6 Educatin and learning New River Cllege ensures that pupils with medical cnditins can participate fully in all aspects f the curriculum and ensures apprpriate adjustments and extra supprt are prvided. Staff are aware f the ptential fr pupils with medical cnditins t have special educatinal needs (SEN). Pupils with medical cnditins wh are finding it difficult t keep up with their studies are referred t the SENCO. The schl s SENCO cnsults the pupil, parents and pupil s healthcare prfessinal t ensure the effect f the pupil s cnditin n their schlwrk is prperly cnsidered. Each member f the schl and health cmmunity knws their rles and respnsibilities in maintaining an effective medical cnditins plicy New River Cllege wrks in partnership with all interested and relevant parties including all schl staff, parents, emplyers and cmmunity healthcare prfessinals t ensure the plicy is planned, implemented and maintained successfully. The fllwing rles and respnsibilities are used fr the medical plicy at New River Cllege. These rles are understd and cmmunicated regularly. Emplyer New River Cllege s emplyer has a respnsibility t: Ensure the health and safety f their emplyees and anyne else n the premises r taking part in schl activities (this includes all pupils). This respnsibility extends t thse staff and thers leading activities taking place ff-site, such as visits, utings r field trips. Make sure the medical plicy is effectively mnitred and evaluated and regularly updated. Prvide indemnity t staff wh vlunteer t administer medicatin t pupils with medical cnditins. Head teacher New River Cllege s Head teacher has a respnsibility t: Ensure the schl is inclusive and welcming and that the medical cnditins plicy is in line with lcal and natinal guidance and plicy framewrks. Liaise between interested parties including pupils, schl staff, special educatinal needs crdinatrs, pastral supprt/welfare fficers, teaching assistants, SENCO, parents and gvernrs. Ensure the plicy is put int actin, with gd cmmunicatin f the plicy t all. Ensure every aspect f the plicy is maintained. Ensure infrmatin held by the schl is accurate and up t date and that there are gd infrmatin sharing systems in place using pupil s healthcare plans. Ensure pupil cnfidentiality. Assess the training and develpment needs f staff and arrange fr them t be met. Ensure all supply staff and new teachers knw the medical cnditins plicy. 7 All schl staff All staff at New River Cllege have a respnsibility t: Be aware f the ptential triggers, signs and symptms f cmmn medical cnditins and knw what t d in an emergency. Understand the medical plicy. Knw which students in their care have a medical cnditin. Allw all students t have immediate access t their emergency medicatin, thrugh their medical pass. Maintain effective cmmunicatin with parents including infrming them if their child has been unwell at schl. Ensure pupils wh carry their medicatin with them have it when they g n a schl visit r ut f the classrm. Be aware f pupils with medical cnditins wh may be experiencing bullying r need extra scial supprt. Ensure all pupils with medical cnditins are nt excluded unnecessarily frm activities they wish t take part in. Ensure pupils have the apprpriate medicatin r fd with them during any exercise and are allwed t take it when needed. Teaching staff Teachers at this schl have a respnsibility t: Ensure students wh have been unwell catch up n missed schl wrk. Be aware that medical cnditins can affect a pupil s learning and prvide extra help when pupils need it. Liaise with parents, the pupil s healthcare prfessinal and special educatinal needs crdinatr if a student is falling behind with their wrk because f their cnditin. SENCO The SENCO at New River Cllege has a respnsibility t: Update the schl s medical cnditins plicy. Knw which pupils have a medical cnditin and which have special educatinal needs because f their cnditin. Ensure teachers make the necessary arrangements if a pupil needs special cnsideratin r access arrangements in exams r cursewrk. Prvide regular training fr schl staff in managing the mst cmmn medical cnditins in schl. Prvide infrmatin abut where the schl can access ther specialist training. Ensure healthcare plans are cmpleted and reviewed annually. Check medicatin held in schl annually fr expiry dates and dispse f accrdingly Administer medicatin t students as prescribed. First aiders First aiders at this schl have a respnsibility t: Give immediate help t casualties with cmmn injuries r illnesses and thse arising frm specific hazards within the schl. 8 Lcal dctrs and specialist healthcare prfessinals Individual dctrs and specialist healthcare prfessinals caring fr students wh attend New River Cllege, have a respnsibility t: Where pssible, and withut cmprmising the best interests f the child, try t prescribe medicatin that can be taken utside f schl hurs. Ensure the child r yung persn knws hw t take their medicatin effectively. Ensure children and yung peple have regular reviews f their cnditin and their medicatin. Prvide the schl with infrmatin and advice regarding individual children and yung peple with medical cnditins (with the cnsent f the pupil and their parents). Pupils The pupils at this schl have a respnsibility t: Treat ther students with and withut a medical cnditin equally. Tell their parents, teacher r nearest staff member when they are nt feeling well. Let a member f staff knw if anther pupil is feeling unwell. Treat all medicatin with respect. Knw hw t gain access t their medicatin in an emergency. Ensure a member f staff is called in an emergency situatin. Parents* The parents f a student at this schl have a respnsibility t: Tell the schl if their child has a medical cnditin. Ensure the schl has a cmplete and up-t-date Healthcare plan fr their child. Infrm the schl abut the medicatin their child requires while taking part in visits, utings r field trips and ther ut-f-schl activities. Tell the schl abut any changes t their child s medicatin, what they take, when and hw much. Infrm the schl f any changes t their child s cnditin. Ensure their child s medicatin and medical devices are labelled with their child s full name. Prvide the schl with apprpriate spare medicatin labelled with their child s name. Ensure medicatin is within expiry dates. Keep child at hme if they are nt well enugh t attend schl. Ensure their child catches up n any schl wrk they have missed. Ensure their child has regular reviews abut their cnditin with their dctr r specialist healthcare prfessinal. *The term parent implies any persn r bdy with parental respnsibility such as fster parent r carer Individual healthcare plans The gverning bdy ensures that plans are reviewed at least annually r earlier if the child s needs change. 9 Unacceptable practice Althugh schl staff shuld use their discretin and judge each case n its merits, it is nt generally acceptable practice t: prevent children frm easily accessing their inhalers and medicatin and administering their medicatin when and where necessary assume that every child with the same cnditin requires the same treatment ignre the views f the child r their parents send children with medical cnditins hme frequently r prevent them frm staying fr nrmal schl activities including lunch if the child becmes ill, send them t the schl ffice r medical rm unaccmpanied penalise children fr their attendance recrd if their absences are related t their medical cnditin e.g. hspital appintments prevent pupils frm drinking, eating r taking tilet r ther breaks whenever they need t in rder t manage their medical cnditin effectively require parents, r therwise make them feel bliged t attend schl t administer medicatin r prvide medical supprt t their child, including with tileting issues. N parent shuld have t give up wrking because the schl is failing t supprt their child s medical needs prevent r create unnecessary barriers t children participating in any aspect f schl life, including schl trips, e.g. requiring parents t accmpany the child Cmplaints Any cmplaint shuld be addressed thrugh the New River Cllege cmplaints prcedure fund n the website. 9 NEW RIVER COLLEGE: Medical Plicy 2017

Schl staff training needs identifying. Student Welfare Administratr delivers training and staff signed ff as cmpetent. IHCP implemented and circulated t all relevant staff. 11 Appendix 1 - Frm 1 ALERT! Asthma awareness fr schl staff What t d in an asthma attack Keep calm. Encurage the child r yung persn t sit up and slightly frward. Make sure the child r yung persn takes tw puffs f reliever inhaler (usually blue) immediately preferably thrugh a spacer. Ensure tight clthing is lsened. Reassure the child. Ring student services and ask fr a first aider t cme t the student. If there is n immediate imprvement Cntinue t make sure the child r yung persn takes ne puff f reliever inhaler every minute fr five minutes r until their symptms imprve. Call 999 r a dctr urgently if: The child r yung persn s symptms d nt imprve in 5 10 minutes. The child r yung persn is t breathless r exhausted t talk. The child r yung persn s lips are blue. Yu are in dubt. Ensure the child r yung persn takes ne puff f their reliever inhaler every minute until the ambulance r dctr arrives. It is essential fr peple wh wrk with children and yung peple with asthma t knw hw t recgnise the signs f an asthma attack and what t d if they have an asthma attack. Cmmn signs f an asthma attack are: cughing shrtness f breath wheezing tightness in the chest being unusually quiet difficulty speaking in full sentences smetimes yunger children express feeling tight in the chest as a tummy ache. After a minr asthma attack Minr attacks shuld nt interrupt the invlvement f a pupil with asthma in schl. When the pupil feels better they can return t schl activities. The parents/carers must always be tld if their child has had an asthma attack. Imprtant things t remember in an asthma attack Never leave a pupil having an asthma attack. If the pupil des nt have their inhaler and/r spacer with them, send anther teacher r pupil t their classrm r assigned rm t get their spare inhaler and/r spacer. In an emergency situatin schl staff are required under cmmn law, duty f care, t act like any reasnably prudent parent. Reliever medicine is very safe. During an asthma attack d nt wrry abut a pupil verdsing. Send anther pupil t get anther teacher/adult if an ambulance needs t be called. Cntact the pupil s parents r carers immediately after calling the ambulance/dctr. 14 Appendix 1 Frm 3 Anaphylaxis awareness fr staff ANAPHYLAXIS Symptms f allergic reactins: Ear/Nse/Thrat - Symptms: runny r blcked nse, itchy nse, sneezing, painful sinuses, headaches, pst nasal drip, lss f sense f smell/taste, sre thrat/swllen larynx (vice bx), itchy muth and/r thrat and blcked ears. Eye - Symptms: watery, itchy, prickly, red, swllen eyes. Allergic 'shiners' (dark areas under the eyes due t blcked sinuses). Airway - Symptms: wheezy breathing, difficulty in breathing and r cughing (especially at night time). Digestin: swllen lips, tngue, itchy tngue, stmach ache, feeling sick, vmiting, cnstipatin and r diarrhea. Skin: Urticaria - wheals r hives-bumpy, itchy raised areas and r rashes. Eczema -cracked, dry, weepy r brken skin. Red cheeks. Angidema - painful swelling f the deep layers f the skin. Symptms f Severe Reactin/ Anaphylaxis: These culd include any f the abve tgether with: Difficulty in swallwing r speaking. Difficulty in breathing -severe asthma Swelling f the thrat and muth Hives anywhere n the bdy r generalized flushing f the skin Abdminal cramps, nausea and vmiting Sudden feeling f weakness (drp in bld pressure) Alteratins in heart rate (fast Pulse) Sense f Impending dm (anxiety/panic) Cllapse and uncnsciusness TREATMENT Ring SENCO and ask fr first aider t cme t student Send a student r member f staff t schl ffice t cllect 2nd epipen and t ask them t ring fr an ambulance and parents. If student cnscius keep them in an upright psitin t aid breathing. If uncnscius then place in recvery psitin. If student is cnscius and alert ask them t self administer their epipen. If student uncnscius, trained member f staff t administer epipen as per training. Recrd time f giving. If n imprvement within 5 minutes then 2nd epipen t be administered. 15 Appendix 1 Frm 4 Diabetes awareness and treatment fr staff What is it? Abnrmal fluctuatins in bld sugar can lead t smene with diabetes becming unwell and, if untreated, lsing cnsciusness. There are tw cnditins assciated with diabetes - hyperglycaemia (high bld sugar) and hypglycaemia (lw bld sugar). Hypglycaemia is the mre cmmn emergency which affects brain functin and can lead t uncnsciusness if untreated. Signs and symptms: Hypglycaemia: Hunger Feeling 'weak' and cnfused Sweating Dry, pale skin Shallw breathing Hyperglycaemia: Thirst Vmiting Fruity/sweet breath Rapid, weak pulse First aid aims Hypglycaemia: Raise bld sugar level as quickly as pssible Get casualty t hspital, if necessary Hyperglycaemia: Get casualty t hspital as sn as pssible Treatment Hypglycaemia: Sit casualty dwn If cnscius, give them a sugary drink, chclate r ther sugary fd If there's an imprvement, ffer mre t eat r drink. Help the casualty t find their glucse testing kit t check their level. Advise them t rest and see their dctr as sn as pssible. If cnsciusness is impaired, d nt give them anything t eat r drink.
