First Aiders The schl has a large number f staff wh are trained and qualified as first aiders. All first aiders have a respnsibility t help casualties with cmmn injuries r illnesses and thse arising frm specific hazards in the schl. When necessary they shuld ensure that an ambulance r prfessinal medical help is called. WSCC emplyees wh hld a valid first aid qualificatin are indemnified by the cunty cuncil s insurance against any claims fr negligence r injury, prvided they relate t first aid prvided in the curse f their emplyment and they acted in gd faith and in accrdance with their training. The indemnity is regardless f where and t whm the first aid was prvided. A list f current 3-day qualified first aiders is prvided at Appendix 9. General Prvisin f First Aid If a student is injured r falls ill during the schl day, he/she must infrm a teacher immediately. The teacher will either send fr a first aider r will send the student t the Student Services ffice. The student will then be assessed, treated (where apprpriate) and recrded. The student will remain under the care f that member f staff until they are fit t resume nrmal lessns. In the event f there being n prspect f recvery the student will be kept in the medical rm and a parent r carer will be cntacted t cllect them. If the injury/illness des nt warrant a student being sent hme but is a cause f cncern t the first aider invlved, then the parent f that student will be infrmed by telephne. Emergency First Aid All staff shuld knw what actin t take in the event f a medical emergency. This includes Hw t summn a first aider Hw t cntact emergency services and what infrmatin t give Wh t cntact within the schl. If a student needs t be taken t hspital a member f staff will always accmpany them and stay with them until a parent arrives. The schl tries t ensure that the member f staff is knwn t the student. Staff shuld nt generally take a student t hspital in their wn car. Emergency Prcedures In a medical emergency first aid will be given, an ambulance is called and parents are ntified. Shuld an emergency situatin ccur t a student wh has a Health Care Plan, the emergency prcedures detailed n the plan are fllwed where apprpriate and a cpy f the Health Care Plan shuld be made available t the ambulance crew. 5 Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Head Injuries Parents must be infrmed if their child receives an injury t their face r head. A head injury letter must be sent t the parent infrming them that the child has received a injury and asking them t bserve the child fr any f the signs f cncussin. Any injury abve the neck must be treated with an ice pack and the student bserved fr cncussin befre either being sent back t class, r sent hme as apprpriate. If the student is being sent hme, then ideally they shuld be accmpanied and a parent shuld be infrmed. Recrd Keeping A daily First Aid Lg is kept f any reprted illness r injury. This includes the date, time, nature f illness/injury, treatment given, utcme and name f the member f staff wh dealt with it. Accident Reprts The schl will keep a recrd f serius accidents using an accident reprt frm and a cpy will be given t the Business Develpment Manager fr frwarding t West Sussex Cunty Cuncil and/r the HSE. In the event f an accident t an emplyee r visitr, an accident reprt frm shuld be cmpleted by the individual cncerned and frwarded t the Business Develpment Manager. She will then arrange fr any necessary investigatins and reprting. Preventin f Cntaminatin frm Bld/Bdy Fluids Occupatinal expsure t bld r ther bdy fluids thrugh spillage pses a ptential risk f infectin, particularly t thse wh may be expsed t these in the wrkplace setting. Safe, effective management f spillages is a precautin which shuld be applied as standard. See Appendix 6 fr further infrmatin. Safe Dispsal f Sharps The schl aims t prtect all pupils, staff and visitrs frm the dangers f expsure t sharps and t ensure staff and pupils knw hw and where they can dispse f sharps crrectly. See Appendix 7 fr further infrmatin. Sharps bxes can be btained frm the Schl Nurse, r by prescriptin frm the student s parent, and shuld be used fr the dispsal f needles. They shuld be kept in a secure and safe envirnment. Safe Dispsal f Medical Waste The schl aims t prtect all staff, pupils and the envirnment frm expsure t pathgens which culd cause disease and t prevent cntaminatin frm hazardus medical waste. Yellw medical waste bags are prvided in the first aid bags. See Appendix 8 fr further infrmatin. January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Health Care Plans When cmpleting a Student Data frm as part f the applicatin prcess parents are asked whether their child has any health cnditins r issues. Infrmatin is als gathered frm a student s previus schl. Students deemed t have a significant health cnditin will be the subject f a Health Care Plan which will recrd their individual medical needs at schl. Parents will be invited t meet with the Office Manager and Student Services staff t frmulate a suitable plan. This will be carried ut in cnsultatin with the Schl Nurse and ther health prfessinals as necessary. Cpies f the Health Care Plan will be made available cnfidentially t all key first aiders in schl (as agreed with parents) and a central register f plans will be kept in the Student Services ffice, where they are available fr inspectin by schl staff. Parents may keep a cpy if they wish. Cnfidentiality f plans shuld be respected. Health care plans will be reviewed annually in cnsultatin with parents and health care prfessinals t incrprate any changes which may have taken place. The schl will seek permissin frm the student and parents befre sharing any medical infrmatin with a third party, such as when a student ges n wrk experience. The standard frm is shwn at Appendix 1. Offsite and Residential Visits The schl has a respnsibility t ensure the health and safety f anyne taking part in ff-site activities. All staff, whether first aid trained r nt, wh are attending ff-site visits shuld be aware f any students with medical cnditins and the assciated infrmatin abut hw t act in an emergency. This shuld be addressed in the risk assessment fr ff-site activities. Students with medical needs shuld be included in educatinal visits as far as this is reasnably practicable. Schl staff shuld discuss any issues with parents and the Schl Nurse in suitable time s that extra measures can be put in place prir t the visit. First Aid Training Any training curse must be supplied by an rganisatin apprved by the HSE. Training fr First Aid at Wrk first aiders 3 day curse (renewable every 3 years) Training fr Emergency First Aid at Wrk first aiders 1 day curse (renewable every 3 years). The schl hlds regular training n dealing with cmmn medical cnditins, ie asthma and use f epipens n a regular basis, fr which a training lg is kept and awareness training certificates issued. January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Managing Medicines in Schl Plicy Parental Supprt The parents f a student at the schl have a respnsibility t: Tell the schl if their child has a medical cnditin Ensure the schl has a cmplete and up-t-date infrmatin fr the Health Care Plan where apprpriate Infrm the schl abut medicatin their child takes during schl hurs Infrm the schl f any medicatin their child requires while taking part in ff-site visits Infrm the schl abut any changes t their child s medicatin Infrm the schl f any change t their child s cnditin Ensure their child s medicatin and medical devices are labelled with their child s full name Prvide the schl with apprpriate spare medicatin labelled with their child s name Ensure their child s medicatin is within expiry dates Administering Medicatin The schl understands the imprtance f taking the medicatin as prescribed. All staff understand that there is n legal r cntractual duty fr any member f staff t administer medicatin r supervise a student taking medicatin unless they have been specifically cntracted t d s. Where specific training is nt required, any member f staff may administer prescribed and nn-prescribed medicines t students under the age f 16 with parental cnsent. The lcal authrity prvides full indemnity t staff wh administer medicines. All schl staff are required, under cmmn law duty f care, t act like any respnsible prudent parent in an emergency situatin. This may include taking actin such as administering medicatin, preferably witnessed by a secnd adult. Administratin f medicatin which is defined as a cntrlled drug (even if the pupil can administer themselves) shuld be dne under the supervisin f a member f staff. Administering Emergency Medicatin All students with medical cnditins shuld have easy access t their emergency medicatin. Items such as inhalers and epipens are held by the student wh must take the respnsibility t have it t hand at all times. Students are encuraged t administer their wn emergency medicatin (eg epipen) where pssible and shuld carry it with them at all times unless it is a cntrlled drug as defined in the Misuse f Drugs Act This als applies t any ff-site r residential visits. Students are encuraged t keep spare supplies f emergency medicatin in the medical cabinet in the Student Services ffice. January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Students wh d nt carry and administer their wn emergency medicatin shuld understand the arrangements fr a member f staff t assist in helping them take their medicatin safely. Lgging Administratin f Medicatin The schl keeps a recrd f each ccasin a student is given, r is witnessed t having taken, medicatin. Details f date, time and dse are recrded. This shuld apply equally t daily r emergency medicatin. Refusal If a student refuses medicatin staff shuld recrd this n the lg sheet fr that student and parents shuld be infrmed as sn as pssible. A student shuld nt be frced t take medicatin. Prescriptin Medicines Medicine shuld nly be brught t schl when it is essential t administer it during the schl day. In the vast majrity f cases dses can be arranged arund the schl day, thus aviding the need fr medicine in schl, eg antibitics. Occasinally a GP may prescribe that a medicine has t be taken during the schl day. Parents may either call int schl and administer the medicine, r they may request that a member f schl staff administers the medicine see Cnsent t Administer Medicines belw. Nn-Prescriptin Medicines Nn prescriptin medicines (apart frm travel sickness medicatin and paracetaml) cannt be administered by staff and students shuld nt carry them fr selfadministratin. Hayfever remedies, etc, shuld therefre be prvided, if necessary, n prescriptin. (See Paracetaml Plicy.) Travel sickness medicatin will be administered by staff, prviding it is supplied in the riginal packaging and accmpanied by a Request fr Schl t Administer Medicatin frm (Appendix 2). Sunscreen is nt a medicine and students shuld self-administer as required. Cnsent t Administer Medicines If a student requires regular prescribed r nn-prescribed medicatin at schl, parents are asked t cmplete a Request fr Schl t Administer Medicatin frm (Appendix 2). This applies equally t lng term r shrt term curses f medicatin. The assciated Agreement f Headteacher t Administer Medicine frm (Appendix 4) shuld als be cmpleted. If a student requires assistance in administering their medicatin then this is utlined n the frm (and als in the Health Care Plan if ne is in place). Pupils Self-Administering Medicatin Fr certain lng-term medical cnditins, it is imprtant fr children t learn hw t selfadminister their medicatin, fr example asthma and diabetes (reference shuld be made January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy t the Managing Medicines in Schls and Early Years Settings Plicy DCSF/DH March 2005 Ref DCL-EN sectin n Self Management ). Fr ther cnditins, apprpriate arrangements shuld be agreed and dcumented in the student s Health Care Plan and parents shuld cmplete a Request fr Student t Carry Own Medicine frm (Appendix 3). Changes t Medicatin Parents and carers shuld be made t understand that if their child s medicatin changes r is discntinued that they shuld infrm the schl immediately. Misuse If a student misuses medicatin, either their wn r anther student s, their parents shuld be infrmed as sn as pssible and they will be subject t the schl s usual disciplinary prcedures. Strage f Medicatin Student Services staff shuld ensure that medicatin is stred crrectly. All medicines are kept in the lckable medical cabinet in the Student Services ffice t which access shuld be restricted, even if students administer medicatin themselves. Students shuld knw where their medicatin is stred and hw t access it. Keys shuld be readily available and nt held persnally by members f staff. All emergency and nn-emergency medicatin shuld be clearly labelled with the student s name and shuld be stred wherever pssible in its riginal cntainer with the prescriber s instructins fr dse and administratin. Sme medicatin may need t be refrigerated and shuld als be clearly labelled with the student s name. This medicatin is stred in the refrigeratr in the Student Services ffice. Expiry dates n medicatin are checked termly and parents infrmed if it has expired. Expiry dates may be nted n strage bxes fr ease f reference. All medicatin shuld be sent hme with students at the end f the schl year and nt be stred during the summer break. It is the parent s respnsibility t ensure new and in date medicatin is prvided in schl n the first day f the new academic year. Dispsal f Medicatin Parents will be be asked t cllect ut f date medicatin at the end f the schl year. Any medicatin nt cllected shuld be taken t a pharmacy t be dispsed f safely. Off-Site and Residential Visits Parents are sent a Parent Cnsent Frm/Medical Questinnaire (Appendix 3) t be cmpleted and returned befre a residential trip which prvides up t date infrmatin abut the student s current cnditin, their verall health and any medicatin which wuld nrmally be taken utside schl hurs. These are taken by a member f staff taking part in the visit and shuld be accmpanied by a cpy f the student s Health Care January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Plan, if ne is in place. Parents shuld ensure a sufficient supply f medicatin is available fr the duratin f the trip. Recrd Keeping Fr legal reasns recrds f all medicines administered are kept at the schl until the student reaches the age f 21. January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Asthma Plicy In develping this asthma plicy the schl acknwledges the advice and guidance f the Natinal Asthma Campaign. The schl recgnises that asthma is a widespread, serius but cntrllable cnditin affecting many students at the schl. The schl welcmes all pupils with asthma and thrugh the plicy pupils will be able t achieve their full ptential in all aspects f schl life. All relevant staff will be given training n asthma management and will be expected t update this. An asthma recrd card is kept fr each student is kept in the Student Services ffice. The schl will stre spare inhalers fr individual children in a labelled cntainer in the Student Services ffice as required. Staff will receive regular training and updates t ensure they have a clear understanding f asthma and what t d in the event f an asthma attack. Students will be encuraged t understand the cnditin s that they can supprt each ther. A list f students with asthma is prduced annually and made available t schl staff cnfidentially. Asthma Asthma is a cnditin that affects the airways. When a persn with asthma cmes int cntact with smething that irritates their airway the muscles arund the walls f the airway tighten s that the airway becmes narrw and the lining inflamed and starts t swell. Smetimes sticky mucus r phlegm builds up which can further narrw the airways. This makes it very difficult t breathe and leads t symptms f asthma. Recgnising an asthma attack The airways in the lungs becme restricted The child will have difficulty speaking The child may wheeze, and have difficulty breathing ut The child may becme quickly distressed, anxius and exhausted. They may appear blue arund the lips and muth. What t d if a child has an asthma attack Ensure that the reliever (blue) inhaler is taken if prescribed Send fr a first aider Stay calm and reassure the child Ensure the child sits upright and slightly frward with their hands n their knees Lsen any tight clthing Encurage slw deep breaths with an pen chest Call 999 and request an ambulance urgently if: The reliever (blue inhaler) has had n effect after 5-10 minutes The child is unable t talk r increasingly distressed The child is disrientated r cllapses The child lks blue arund the muth and lips If yu have any dubts abut the child s cnditin Infrm the parents r carer as sn as pssible abut the attack Minr attacks shuld nt interrupt the student s invlvement in the schl day and they shuld return t activities when they are fully recvered. January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Diabetes Plicy In develping this diabetes plicy the schl acknwledges the advice and guidance f the British Diabetic Sciety. The schl recgnises that diabetes is a widespread cnditin affecting many children and welcmes all studetns with the cnditin and recgnises its respnsibility in caring fr them. All relevant staff will be given training n diabetes management as part f their first aid training. All students with diabetes have an Health Care Plan. Parents are asked t prvide spare supplies, eg glucse tablets, biscuits, glycgel, etc, in a named bx in the medical cupbard in the Student Services ffice All first aid staff have a clear understanding f diabetes and are able t recgnise cmmn signs and symptms assciated with the cnditin. Staff are infrmed each year f thse students wh have diabetes t keep cnfidentially. Diabetes Diabetes is a cnditin in which the amunt f sugar in the bld stream is t high. This cmes abut because the bdy fails t either prduce insulin r enugh insulin t deal with the sugar. As a result the sugar builds up in the bld causing Hyperglycaemia. Peple with diabetes cntrl their bld sugar levels with diet which prvides a predictable amunt f sugar and carbhydrate and insulin injectins. Yung peple particularly can have emtinal and behaviural difficulties as a result f their cnditin and much supprt is required. Hypglycaemia lw bld sugar Hyperglycaemia high bld sugar Causes f Hypglycaemia: Inadequate amunts f fd eaten, missed r delayed T much r t intense exercise Excessive insulin Unscheduled exercise Recgnitin f Hypglycaemia: Onset is SUDDEN Weak, faintness r hunger Palpitatin (fast pulse) tremr Strange behaviur r actins Sweating, cld, clammy skin Headache, blurred visin, slurred speech Cnfusin, deteriratin levels f respnse leading t uncnsciusness Seizures Treatment f Hypglycaemia: Call r send fr a first aider REFER TO THE STUDENT S HEALTH CARE PLAN If a bld sugar meter is available take a bld sugar reading Ensure the student eats a quick sugar surce eg glucse tablet, gel r fruit juice January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Wait 10 minutes and test again if pssible If the student feels better, fllw with a carbhydrate type snack eg biscuit, cereal bar etc Once recvered allw t return t nrmal schl activities Infrm parents r guardian f the episde If the child becmes drwsy and uncnscius the situatin is LIFE THREATENING CALL 999 and request an ambulance Administer glycgel frm student s supply bx if prescribed Place the child in recvery psitin and stay with the child Cntact the parent/carer as sn as pssible Causes f Hyperglycaemia: T much fd T little insulin Decreased activity Illness Infectin Stress Recgnitin f Hyperglycaemia: Onset is ver time hurs r days Warm dry skin, rapid breathing Fruity sweet smelling breath Excessive thirst and increasing hunger Frequent passing f urine Blurred visin Stmach ache, nausea, vmiting Skin flushing Lack f cncentratin Cnfusin Drwsiness that culd lead t uncnsciusness Treatment f Hyperglycaemia: Send fr a first aider If bld sugar meter available take reading Encurage student t drink water r sugar free drinks Allw student t administer extra insulin Check bld sugar reading again after minutes Permit student t rest befre resuming activities if feeling well enugh Cntact parent r carer If bld sugar level des nt cme dwn r there is n imprvement CALL 999 and request an ambulance January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Anaphylaxis Plicy In develping this plicy the schl acknwledges the advice and guidance f the Anaphylaxis Sciety. The schl recgnises that allergic shck (anaphylaxis) is a serius cnditin that may affect a number f students at the schl and recgnises the respnsibility it has in dealing with student s allergies apprpriately. All pupils with ptential anaphylaxis will have an Health Care Plan. All first aiders will have an understanding f what it means t be allergic, whether it be a reactin f the skin, airbrne, cntact, ingestin, r injectin. They will be able t recgnise and respnd t a student wh may be having an anaphylactic reactin including the administering f emergency adrenaline (epipen). Staff will receive regular training and updates t ensure they have a clear understanding f what t d in the event f an allergic shck. The schl will hld an epipen fr thse students wh are prescribed it and als ther antihistamine medicines in either tablet r syrup frm t respnd t mre minr reactins. Spare medicatin will be labelled and stred apprpriately in a cntainer in the medical cabinet in the Student Services ffice. This cntainer can be taken ff-site n schl excursins. All staff will be infrmed f thse children wh have this cnditin. Allergic Reactin An allergy is a hypersensitive reactin t intrinsically harmless antigens (substances), usually prteins which causes the frmatin f an antibdy which specifically reacts with it. In susceptible individuals the reactin may develp within secnds r minutes f cntact with a trigger factr. The expsure may result in a severe allergic reactin that can be life threatening. In an anaphylactic reactin chemicals are released int the bld stream that widen the bld vessels and narrw the air passages. Bld pressure falls and breathing becmes impaired. The thrat and tngue can swell thus increasing the risk f hypxia (lack f xygen in the bld). Triggers Skin r airbrne cntact with particular materials Injectin f a specific drug Insect bite Ingestin f certain fds, eg nuts, fish and dairy prducts. Recgnitin Anxiety Widespread bltchy skin Swelling f the tngue and thrat Puffiness arund the eyes Impaired breathing January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Serius symptms Cld, clammy skin Blue-grey tinge arund lips Weakness/dizziness Rapid shallw breathing Prgress further Restlessness Aggressiveness Gasping fr air Uncnsciusness Treatment Call fr a first aider Use epipen frm student s bag if available If nt - ask member f staff t get student s emergency medicatin frm Student Services ffice Administer antihistamine as apprpriate ACCORDING TO HEALTH CARE PLAN either syrup r tablet if prescribed Cntact parents When a student recvers allw time t rest If serius symptms appears CALL 999, request ambulance and administer: Adrenaline via the epipen immediately if prescribed Stay with student, nte the time epipen was given and reassure student (keep this infrmatin and cntainer fr ambulance crew) Give as much detail t the ambulance crew n arrival regarding the allergic reactin and what medicine yu have given January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Epilepsy Plicy The schl recgnises that epilepsy is cnditin which affects students at the schl. The schl welcmes all students with epilepsy and thrugh the plicy pupils will be able t achieve their full ptential in all aspects f schl life. All first aiders will be given training n epilepsy management. First aiders shuld have a clear understanding f what t d in the event f a seizure. The schl wrks in partnership the Schl Nurse and parents t prvide a cntinuatin f care fr thse pupils wh suffer frm the cnditin. Staff are infrmed each year f the children at the schl wh have epilepsy. A cpy f Health Care Plans (where prvided) are available fr staff t inspect. Advice and further infrmatin n individuals is available frm the Schl Nurse. Epilepsy Epilepsy is a tendency t brief disruptin in the nrmal electrchemical activity f the brain, which can affect peple f all ages, backgrunds and levels f intelligence. It is nt a disease r an illness, but may be a symptm f sme physical disrder. Hwever, its cause, especially in the yung, may have precise medical explanatin. Tnic Clnic Seizure (Grand Mal) The student may make a strange cry and fall suddenly. Muscles first stiffen and then relax and jerking and cnvulsive mvements begin which can be quite vigrus. Saliva may appear arund the muth and the student may be incntinent. Cmplex and Partial Seizures (Tempral Lbe Seizures) These ccur when nly a prtin f the brain is affected by excessive electrical discharge. There may be invluntary mvements such as twitching, plucking at clthing r lip smacking. The student may appear cnscius but be unable t speak r respnd during this frm f seizure. Ensure the safety f the student and gently mve them away frm any dangers. Speak calmly t the student and stay with them until the seizure has passed. Absence (Petit Mal) This can easily pass unnticed. The student may appear t daydream r stare blankly. There are very few signs that a student is in seizure. These types f episdes, if frequent, can lead t serius learning difficulties as the student will nt be receiving any visual r aural messages during thse few secnds. Therefre it is imprtant t be understanding, nte any prbable episdes, check with the student that they have understd what has happened and infrm parents. Teachers can play an imprtant rle in recgnising a seizure, recrding changes in behaviural patterns and frequency. Prcedure fr an Epileptic Seizure Ttal seizure (tnic clnic) KEEP CALM Students will tend t fllw yur example! Let the seizure fllw its wn curse; it cannt be stpped r altered. January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Ask the ther students t leave the rm where pssible and ask a respnsible student t fetch anther adult. Then cntact a first aider, and send anther student t fetch the wheelchair frm the medical rm in case it is needed. Nte the time f the seizure. Prtect the student frm harm. Only mve them if in immediate danger. If pssible mve bjects that may cause injury away frm the immediate area. As sn as pssible (nrmally pst fit) place the student n his/her side this des nt have t be the recvery psitin but just s that the tngue can fall frward and excessive saliva can drain ut f the muth. Supprt the head and stay with the student until cmpletely recvered. Talk quietly t the student and reassure but d nt try t restrain any cnvulsive mvements. D nt put anything int the muth r ffer drinks until fully recvered. Remve t the medical rm when safe t d s. The first aider shuld then make a full assessment f the seizure and nte any injuries that may have been sustained. Allw the student t rest and sleep fllwing the seizure as this may be the first in a cluster f seizures. Ensure they remain n their sides. Infrm the parents and arrange fr cllectin. If the fit lasts any lnger than 5 minutes, call an ambulance immediately. It is very imprtant the child is assessed at the hspital and the sner this happens, the better. If the ambulance is summned then reprt the seizure in as much detail as yu can, especially hw lng it has lasted. A member f staff shuld accmpany the child t hspital and stay with them until the parent(s) arrive. January

Wrthing High Schl Medical Cnditins at Schl Plicy Paracetaml Plicy It is a legal requirement that we have yur written permissin in rder t administer any pain relief medicatin. Paracetaml is a widely used drug fr cntrlling pain and reducing temperature. Despite its prevalence, it can be very dangerus if taken inapprpriately. Overdse requires immediate medical attentin. It is nt recmmended t allw children t carry paracetaml arund the schl with them. If, n ccasin, a student needs t take a paracetaml fr pain relief, the Student Services staff will be happy t d this. Letters with a permissin tear-ff slip are sent ut t parents befre a student jins the schl. In additin t this written permissin, we will phne parents at the time t check that they are happy fr us t give paracetaml and cnfirm the dsage. If we d nt have yur written permissin the schl will nt administer paracetaml. West Sussex Cunty Cuncil, in cnsultatin with Health Practitiners, has carefully cnsidered the benefits and dangers f administering this nn-prescriptin drug in schls and settings. Fr lder pupils, it is smetimes apprpriate t give paracetaml t cntrl specific pain such as migraine r perid pain. Schls administering paracetaml t children ver 10 shuld adhere t the fllwing cnditins: The member f staff respnsible fr giving medicines must be wary f rutinely giving paracetaml t children. If a student cmplains f pain as sn as they arrive at schl and asks fr painkillers, it is nt advisable t give paracetaml straight away. There shuld be at least fur hurs between any tw dses f paracetaml cntaining medicines. N mre than fur dses f any remedy cntaining paracetaml shuld be taken in any 24 hurs. Always cnsider whether the student may have been given a dse f paracetaml befre cming t schl. Many nn-prescriptin remedies such as Beecham s Pwders, Bts pain relief syrup fr children, Lemsip, Night Nurse, Vicks Cld Care, etc, cntain paracetaml. If paracetaml tablets are taken sn after taking these remedies, it culd cause an unintended verdse. The student is first encuraged t get sme fresh air/have a drink/smething t eat/take a walk/sit in the shade (as apprpriate) and paracetaml is nly cnsidered if these actins d nt wrk. There must be prir written parental cnsent and verbal cnsent frm the parent r carer n the day. Only standard paracetaml tablets may be administered. Cmbinatin drugs, which cntain ther drugs besides paracetaml must nt be administered. Paracetaml must be stred securely as all ther medicines are stred and shuld nt be kept in first aid bxes. Students can nly be given ne dse during the schl day: ne 500mg tablet fr children wh are 12 r under; tw 500mg tablets fr children ver 12. If this des nt relieve the pain, cntact the parent r the emergency cntact. The member f staff respnsible fr giving medicines must witness the student taking the paracetaml, and make a recrd f it. The student shuld be made aware that paracetaml shuld nly be taken when abslutely necessary, that it is an ingredient in many cld and headache remedies and that great care shuld be taken t avid verdsing.
