2 Need Early diagnosis and treatment of stroke and other neurologic disorders can have a profound impact on patient outcomes and mortality. The diagnosis, management, and treatment of diseases of the brain and spine is rapidly changing. It is vital that primary care practitioners, nurses, therapists, and other allied health care providers maintain an awareness of the differential diagnosis, as well as new and emerging treatment options for these. Goal This annual activity will focus on stroke and other disorders of the brain and spine, and foster networking and collaboration among clinical disciplines within the region. Both current and future treatment options will be addressed, along with management issues and prevention of possible complications. In addition, it will showcase the capabilities of the neuroscience division of in the management of stroke and various neurological disorders. Case presentations will complement didactic presentations and an interactive audience response session will engage participants and gauge the effectiveness of the activity. Target Audience Primary care physicians, internists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physical and occupational therapists, and other allied health care professionals will benefit from attendance at this activity. Objectives At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to: Describe neuroanatomical correlation with post stroke cognitive behavior and personality changes Describe current recommendations for acute stroke care Describe how updated treatment modalities for Parkinson s disease, such as support groups, respite care, clinic offerings, therapy, and Purposeful Movement classes can impact the patient and/or caregiver and aid in the management of the disease Review components of a comprehensive neurological exam/assessment Assess findings of a neurological exam accurately Correlate findings of a neurological assessment to formulate a likely cause of a given neurological problem Develop confidence in assessment skills Discuss advances in technology for stroke rehabilitation Identify benefits of interdisciplinary intervention in stroke rehabilitation Identify signs of cervical spondylotic myelopathy Describe treatments available for cervical spondylotic myelopathy Identify action steps for patients who present with or have strong family history of arteriovenous malformation, aneurysm, or abnormal blood vessel Recognize symptoms of cranial nerve disease leading to facial pain and spasms Describe the latest techniques used for imaging cranial nerves

3 CME Accreditation The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Designation The University of Pittsburgh designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Other health care professionals are awarded 0.6 continuing education units (CEU s) which are equal to 6.25 contact hours. Nursing Accreditation is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Nursing Contact Hours Participants who successfully complete this activity will be awarded 6.25 contact hours. Participants must attend the entire program in order to receive credit. Trauma Hours Sessions that meet the requirements for trauma education hours will be indicated on the credit designation form at the conference. Stroke Hours Sessions that meet the requirements for stroke education hours will be indicated on the credit designation form at the conference.
