2 Course Goal Attendees will gain a better understanding of pathophysiology, symptomatology, approaches to diagnosis, and options for treatment. Providers will more effectively employ appropriate consultation, diagnosis and treatment, which will translate into improved outcomes. Course Objectives At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to: 1. Diagnose transient ischemic attack and take appropriate action to prevent stroke. 2. Explain to patients the indications, benefits and risks of new endovascular treatments for aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. 3. Order referrals for stroke patients in need of gait rehabilitation. 4. Refer stroke patients to research studies designed to answer questions about treatment and management. 5. Refer stroke patients to a properly accredited stroke centers for care. 6. Explain the different options for surgical intervention to patients with aneurysms and malformations. 7. Describe the decision-making process appropriate to patients in need of surgery, endovascular or medical therapy for asymptomatic carotid stenosis. 8. Participate in discussions and decisions related to the utility of mobile stroke units and telestroke systems. Target Audience This program is intended for neurologists, neurosurgeons, critical care physicians, emergency physicians, nurses and therapists who treat stroke patients. Accreditation St. Joseph s Hospital and Medical Center (SJHMC) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Certification St. Joseph s Hospital and Medical Center designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 5.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
